Forest fires cause destructive damage in forest ecosystems. The long-term effects of these damages can lead to climate change and drought. Forest fires damage not only environment but also economic and social life of countries. In order to minimize these damages, forest fires should be take into control of early time. Early control of forest fires depends on the detection of the fire as soon as possible. There is a need for fast and accurate warning systems for fire detection. In this thesis, early warning system is designed by using image processing techniques. In this designed system, a study was carried out on the detection of smoke by using forest fire images. Smoke occurs before the flame at the time of fire. Therefore, early detection of smoke plays an important role in the detection of forest fire. Texture and color characteristic of smoke were used to detect smoke. Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Law's Texture Energy Values (LAWS) method were used for the extraction of texture features. In the extraction of color features, the features that define the smoke color in RGB color space are used. After the texture and color features of the smoke were extracted, these features were classified by using Support Vector Machines (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) classifiers. Achievements obtained as a result of classification are shown and compared with each other.
