The Determination on the Elementary School Students’ Awareness Related to the Environment

Abstract

Abstract It has been aimed with this study that the elementary school students’ awareness related to the environment is determined. The survey model has been used in the research, and the sampling consists of 60 students in total that they receive their education at the forth grade at a state elementary school on Turkey’s north part. “Elementay School Awareness Scale” which was developed by Yıldız Yılmaz and Mentiş Taş (2017) has been used as the data collection tool in the research. The scale consists of 35 items and 4 aspects. The data which was obtained in the research was analyzed as the percentage (%) and frequency (f). As a result of the research, it can be said that the elementary school students had the high awareness on the environment when it is considered that they had the points in the Elementary Environment Awareness Scale related to the Elementary School Students. Furthermore, the research results reveal that the elementary school students have some deficient and incorrect knowledge. In the research, it is interesting to note that the students state that electricity is an consumable energy source. In addition, it is thought that the reason why students do not decide on membership of civil society organizations such as TEMA, which carries out studies related to erosion, forestation and conservation of natural assets, is not aware of these institutions. Öz Bu araştırma ile ilkokul öğrencilerin çevreye yönelik farkındalıklarının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada, tarama modeli kullanılmış olup örneklemini, Türkiye’nin kuzeyinde bir devlet ilkokulunun 4. sınıfta öğrenim görmekte olan toplam 60 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak, Yıldız Yılmaz ve Mentiş Taş (2017) tarafından geliştirilen “İlkokul Çevre Farkındalık Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Ölçek, 35 madde ve 4 boyuttan oluşmaktadır. Araştırmada elde edilen veriler, yüzde (%) ve frekans (f) olarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, ilkokul öğrencilerinin İlkokul Çevre Farkındalık Ölçeğinden aldıkları puanlar göz önüne alındığında çevreye yönelik farkındalıklarının yüksek olduğu söylenebilir. Ayrıca, araştırma sonuçları ilkokul öğrencilerinin eksik ve yanlış bilgiye sahip olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Araştırmada, öğrencilerin elektriğin tükenebilir bir enerji kaynağı olduğunu belirtmesi ilginç bir sonuçtur. Ayrıca, öğrencilerin erozyonla mücadele, ağaçlandırma ve doğal varlıkları koruma ile ilgili çalışmaları yapan TEMA gibi sivil toplum kuruluşlarına üye olma konusunda karar vermemelerinin nedeninin bu kuruluşlar hakkında bilgi sahibi olmadıkları şeklinde düşünülmektedir.
