Arapgir, ticaret yollarının kesiştiği bir coğrafyada bulunmaktadır. Bu özelliğin yanı sıra iklimi ve doğası insanların bölgeye yerleşmesinde önemli bir faktör olmuştur. Selçukluların bölgeye hâkim olmasıyla huzur ortamı sağlanmış, şehir ticaretin gelişmesine bağlı olarak hızla kalkınmıştır. Bugün Eski Şehir olarak bilinen vadi, Orta Çağın önemli bir ticaret şehri haline gelmiştir. Belde gelişimini Osmanlı Devleti döneminde de sürdürerek çağına göre oldukça kalabalık bir sancak merkezi olmuştur. XVIII. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru özellikle Eski Şehir Vadisi'nden göçen insanlar bağ ve bahçelerinin bulunduğu bugünkü merkeze taşınmaya başlamış ve şehir burada hızlı bir gelişim göstererek mamur bir kasaba olmuştur; XIX. yüzyılda eski Arapgir merkezinin memuriyetleri yeni merkeze geçmiştir. İlçe aktif bir ticaret merkezi olarak I. Cihan Harbine kadar gelişimini ve nüfus yoğunluğunu sürdürmüştür. Bu dönemde dokuma başta olmak üzere el sanatları büyük bir ilerleme yakalamıştır. Ancak savaştan sonra Osmanlı Devleti yıkılmış, ticaret yolları eski önemini ve işleyişini yitirmiştir. Bu sebeple büyük şehirlere yönelik göç hareketleri hızlanmıştır. Bu çalışma ile ilçenin yeteri kadar incelenmeyen tarihi coğrafyası ele alınmış olup, şehrin genelini kapsayan bir araştırma hedeflenmiştir. Arapgir is located in a geography where trade routes intersect. In addition to this feature, its climate and nature have been an important factor for people to settle in the region. With the dominance of the Seljuks in the region, an atmosphere of peace was provided, and the city developed rapidly because of the development of trade. Known today as the Old City, the valley has become an important commercial city of the Middle Ages. The town continued to develop during the Ottoman Empire and became a very crowded sanjak center compared to its era. Towards the end of the 18th century, especially the people who migrated from the Old City Valley started to move to today's center, where the fields and gardens had been located, and the city developed rapidly and became a prosperous town; in the 19th century, the offices of the old Arapgir center were transferred to the new center. The district kept its development and population density as an active trade center until the World War I. In this period, handicrafts, especially weaving, made great progress. However, after the war, the Ottoman Empire collapsed, trade routes lost their former importance and functioning. For this reason, migration movements towards big cities became faster. With this study, the historical geography of the district, which has not been studied sufficiently, has been taken into consideration, and a research covering the city in general has been aimed.
