School dropout is an ongoing problem in Turkish Education System. While the existing studies on dropout in
Turkey focus on reasons and intervention models of dropout in the primary school level of compulsory
education, there is a shortage of research scrutinizing the dropout phenomenon in high school level. This study
aims to determine the reasons of high school dropout from the perspectives of high school students who drop
out of high school. The study is based on a qualitative research model, which is completed by a
phenomenological approach. The study group is composed of 25 high school leavers who continue
apprenticeship training in Vocational Training Centers in 2011-2012 in the four districts (Gölcük, Körfez, İzmit,
Gebze) of Kocaeli. The participants were chosen by employing purposive sampling methods. Data were
collected using semi-structured interviews, and content analysis was used in data analysis. Restricted by the
experiences of participants, the reasons behind high school dropout were determined as academic failure,
unwillingness and dislike of school, discipline and health problems. The study also strongly emphasizes the
effects of students’ relationships with their friends, teachers-administrators and families on the process of giving
the decision to leave school.
Devamsızlık ve Okulu Terk Riski Durum Saptaması ve İhtiyaç Analizi Araştırma Raporu’nda Türkiye‘de ve
birçok ülkede okul terki ve devamsızlığın eğitim sisteminde büyük bir problem olarak görüldüğü
belirtilmektedir (Öge, 2009). Bu konuda Türkiye’de var olan çalışmalar zorunlu eğitim kapsamına giren
ilköğretim düzeyindeki terk nedenleri ve müdahale yöntemleri üzerinde yoğunlaşırken, lise terk sorunsalı
üzerine araştırma eksikliği bulunmaktadır. Bu araştırmada liseyi terk etmiş öğrencilerin algılarına göre, liseyi
terk etme nedenlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma tarama modeline dayanan nitel bir araştırmadır.
Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2011-2012 öğretim yılında Kocaeli’nde 4 ilçede (Gölcük, Körfez, İzmit, Gebze)
bulunan Mesleki Eğitim Merkezlerinde çıraklık eğitimi alan ve liseyi terk etmiş 25 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır.
Çalışma grubunun belirlenmesinde seçkisiz olmayan örnekleme yöntemlerinden amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi
kullanılmıştır. Veri toplama yöntemi olarak yüz yüze görüşme tekniği kullanılmış ve veri analizi aşamasında
veriler içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Araştırma katılımcılarının deneyimleriyle sınırlı olarak araştırma
sonuçları lise düzeyinde okul terk nedenlerinin akademik başarısızlık, isteksizlik ve okulu sevmeme, devamsızlık,
disiplin problemleri ve sağlık problemleri olduğunu göstermektedir. Çalışmada ayrıca öğrencilerin devamsızlık
ve okul terklerinde arkadaş, aile ve öğretmen-yönetici etkisi vurgulanmaktadır.
