This research analyzes the interaction between art and ideology as a modern phenomenon,
with the objective of pinning down this interaction throughout Turkish Political History.
Emergence of cinema in Turkey and its common characteristics throughout different periods
form a significant example for the interaction between politics (official discourse in this
context) and art. Views on belief, tradition, culture and enlightenment most of which
dominate Turkish Cinema from its early years, are coherent with the secular views of the
young republic.
Islamist Cinema was born as a reaction to the tight grip of republic's official discourse on
cinema. Message and tone of the directors who produce films within the guidelines of the
aforementioned cinema movement varies, depending on the political atmosphere of the
period in which the films were made. Current politics, ideological discourse and state
institutions (censorship boards, authorities issuing the tax rates, governmental bodies that
produce works of art) were highly influential on the discourse of Islamist Cinema Movement.
The movement has transformed in accordance with the course of Islamism in the country
while focusing on messages directed to individuals, aiming to remind traditions and
educating masses on religious rites during its initial years. (1970-1980) 15 years period
following its first decade (1980-1995) witnessed a shift of the objective from educating the
masses to invoking awareness in and eventually activating them. Islamist Cinema peaked
during these years through which Mainstream Turkish Cinema has lost its sphere of influence.
Islamist Cinema Movement, which has lost momentum due to transformation of political
discourse during 2000s, has significantly altered its tone comparing to former periods,
focusing on topics like Sufism, tolerance, solidarity, universal human rights, animal rights,
protecting the environment, ignorance and fanaticism.
