Throughout the ages, creative act has pushed society toward new pursuits, and artist nourished by society has developed his/her own way of expression by blending what the particular time has demanded. Printmaking art that has an extensive range from motifs that scratched on cave walls to digital prints which enable mass production has been developing even further thanks to the technological improvements. Today, printmaking has transformed from an authentic artistic discipline with prints copied in editions by using plates, numbered and signed, into a way of producing with an ambiguous definition, and positioned itself within contemporary art. In this study the present position of printmaking has been discussed through new presentations and various examples, and the works by contemporary printmaking artists have been assessed. To be able to make these assessments, firstly the sources have been reviewed, the exhibitions visited and the speeches on printmaking reviewed. Then by studying the interpretations of the art critics and writers, it has been strived to establish a versatile point of view on printmaking.
