Bad women or demons which appear to new mothers cause them fear, make them ill lor even cause their death in the postpartum stage. They can harm the newborn baby, too. The old Turkish and shamanistic belief that bad spirits harrass the patients-women and the babies-to-be is dominant in Anatolia in the form of alkarisi beliefs. There are beliefs in different cultures and folklores which resemble alkarisi beliefs, such as in Greek Mythology, European Folklore and Altay Folklore, and the similarities between them are easily seen. In a scientific context, it can be established that archetypal beliefs relating to women such as bad spirits, demons, terrible women, and witches, which all come into play in alkarisi beliefs, are closely connected to postpartum depression. It is known that traditional practices concerning maternal and child health are still in use. However, traditional practices and beliefs are not sufficient to solve the scientific problem.
