ÖZET Doktora Tezi TERMİSTÖR PROBLEMİNİN B-SPLİNE SONLU ELEMAN YÖNTEMLERİ İLE ÇÖZÜMLERİ ALAATTIN ESEN İnönü Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü Matematik Anabilim Dalı 106 + xi sayfa 2003 Tez Danışmanı : Doç. Dr. Selçuk KUTLUAY Bu doktora tezi altı bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde, bu çalış mada model problem olarak gözönüne alman bir boyutlu termistör problemi için önceki araştırmacılar tarafından verilen çözüm teknikleri incelendi. İkinci bölümde sonraki bölümlerde kullanılacak olan B-spline baz fonksi yonları, sonlu fark ve sonlu eleman yöntemleri hakkında bazı matematiksel temel kavramlar verildi. Üçüncü bölümde, termistör problemi ve problemin fiziksel özellikleri tanıtıldı. Dördüncü ve beşinci bölümler tezin orjinal kısımlarını oluşturmaktadır. Dördüncü bölümde, adım fonksiyon elektriksel iletkenlikli termistör problemi iii incelendi. Model problemin kararlı hâl nümerik çözümleri subdomain collo cation, Petrov-Galerkin ve kübik Galerkin B-spline sonlu eleman yöntemleri yardımı ile elde edildi ve bulunan nümerik çözümler problemin kararlı hâl analitik çözümü ile karşılaştırıldı. Beşinci bölümde, ramp fonksiyon elektriksel iletkenlikli termistör prob leminin kararlı hâl çözümlerini elde etmek için lineer, kuadratik ve kübik B- spüne fonksiyonlar üzerine temellenmiş subdomain collocation, Petrov-Galer kin, kuadratik Galerkin ve kübik Galerkin sonlu eleman yöntemleri verildi. Yöntemler yardımı ile elde edilen nümerik çözümler problemin kararlı hâl anali tik çözümü ile karşılaştırıldı. Altıncı bölümde, dördüncü ve beşinci bölümlerde elde edilen nümerik sonuçlar değerlendirildi. Ayrıca bu bölümde ileriki çalışmalara bırakılan üs tel elektriksel iletkenlikli termistör probleminin halen çözülmemiş modelinden kısaca bahsedildi. ABSTRACT Ph.D. Thesis SOLUTIONS OF THE THERMISTOR PROBLEM BY B-SPLINE FINITE ELEMENT METHODS ALAATTİN ESEN İnönü University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Mathematics 106 + xi pages 2003 Supervisor : Doç. Dr. Selçuk KUTLUAY This Ph.D. thesis consists of six chapters. In the first chapter, a num ber of solutions techniques given by earlier authors for the one-dimensional thermistor problem considering as a model problem in this study have been reviewed. In the second chapter, some mathematical basic concepts about B- spline basis functions, finite difference and finite element methods to be used in later chapters are outlined. In the third chapter, the thermistor problem and its physical properties are introduced. The fourth and fifth chapters consist of the original parts of this thesis. In the fourth chapter, the thermistor problem with a step function electrical conductivity is investigated. The steady-state solutions of the model prob lem are obtained by using subdomain collocation, Petrov-Galerkin and cubic Galerkin B-spline finite element methods. The numerical results obtained by the present methods have been compared with the exact steady-state solution of the problem. In the fifth chapter, the subdomain collocation, Petrov-Galerkin, quad ratic Galerkin and cubic Galerkin finite element methods based on linear, quadratic and cubic B-spline functions are given to obtain the steady-state so lutions of the thermistor problem with a ramp function electrical conductivity. The numerical results obtained by the present methods are compared with the exact steady-state solution of the problem. The numerical results obtained in the fourth and fifth chapters are evaluated in the sixth chapter. In this chapter, the still unsolved model of the thermistor problem with an exponential electrical conductivity is mentioned briefly but it is left for the future works.
