Brucellosis is a disease of animals that transmitted to humans by the ingestion of infected food products, direct contact with an infected
animal or inhalation of aerosols. Although it occurs worldwide, brucellosis is more common in Mediterranian basin, Middle East, the
Arabian Peninsula, Mexico, Central and South America, the Balkan Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. The identification and clinical
management of brucellosis requires a combination of clinical suspicion, appropriate laboratory tests and consideration of antibacterial
therapy. Human brucellosis is a multisystem disease that may involve any organ or system. Therefore clinical diagnosis of brucellosis is
difficult because of the wide spectrum of clinical manifastations associated with them. The diagnostic methods to detect Brucella spp
include culture, serology and molecular tests. The aim of this article is to review and discuss the laboratory tests in the diagnosis of human
brucellosis. |
