Araştırma Haziran 2013 - Ağustos 2014 tarihleri arasında Malatya Devlet Hastanesi Reanimasyon Yoğun Bakımları’nda yürütüldü. Araştırmanın evrenini bu yoğun bakımlarda çalışan toplam 50 hemşire oluşturdu. Herhangi bir örnekleme yöntemine gidilmedi ve hemşirelerin tamamına ulaşılmaya çalışıldı. Araştırmanın örneklemini araştırmaya katılmaya gönüllü 50 hemşire oluşturdu. Veriler “Hemşire Tanıtım Formu” ve ‘’El Hijyeni Anketi” kullanılarak yüz yüze görüşme yöntemi ile toplandı. Elde edilen verilerin değerlendirilmesinde tanımlayıcı istatistiksel yöntemler (sayı, yüzde, ortalama, standart sapma) kullanıldı.
Araştırmaya katılan hemşirelerin %98’i hastanın vücut sekresyonlarına temas varsa mutlaka ellerin yıkanması ve bir hastadan diğerine geçerken eldiven değiştirilmesi gerektiğini, % 6’sı eldiven kullanılan bir işlem sonucunda el yıkamaya gerek olmadığını ve %2’si el yıkama konusunda hazırlanan posterlere birebir uymanın gereksiz olduğunu düşünüyordu. Hemşirelerin %40’ının ellerini yıkarken sıvı sabun kullandığı, %82’sinin sabunla köpürtüp 20-30 saniye ovaladıktan sonra yıkayıp kuruladığı, %100’ünün tek kullanımlık peçete ile kuruladığı, %58’inin alkol bazlı antiseptik solüsyonları üretici firmanın önerdiği miktarda alıp kuruyuncaya kadar ovaladığı saptandı.
