Assigning the practice teachers for school experience and teaching practice courses: Criteria, challenges and suggestions
    (Hacettepe University, 2014) Göktaş Ö.; Şad S.N.
This study aimed to investigate the criteria for assigning the practice teachers who are to supervise the senior prospective teachers during school experience and practice courses; the problems faced during the process; and suggestions for improving the assignment process. The study was designed as a case study. The case studied was specified as the ‘assignment process of practice teachers for school experience and practice courses conducted at faculty of education”. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with one university coordinator and two assistant coordinators currently taking active part in the process, two former university coordinators successively served since 2005, current coordinator of provincial directorate general of national education, four school principals taking active role in the assignment process, and seven teachers. The results of the study revealed certain criteria used for assigning practice teachers [e.g. Informal feedback from students and faculty mentors, Informal views of school and university coordinators], the problems faced during the process [e.g. Making assignments disregarding the school administration, Creating a feeling of injustice among teachers], and suggestions by the participants about the assignment process [e.g. Cooperation and coordination between institutions (among province, school, department and university coordinators), assignment based on the practice teacher’s performance]. © 2014, (publisher). Computer and internet use self-efficacy scale for elementary school teachers: Validity and reliability studies
    (Ankara University, 2015) Şad S.N.; Demir O.
This study aimed to develop a self-efficacy scale to be used to measure elementary school teachers’ selfefficacy beliefs regarding computer and internet use. For this purpose validity (content, face, construct, and criterion validity) and reliability (internal consistency and temporal reliability) studies were conducted. After being tested for content and face validity through expert opinion, the draft scale was piloted first on 250 elementary school teachers. Initial exploratory factor analysis yielded two alternative models which accounted for 66.16% and 74.02% of the total variance, respectively. The confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the two-factor model with acceptable goodness of fit indices (X2/sd=200.36/100=2.00; p=0.000; RMSEA= 0.063; GIF= 0.91; AGFI= 0.92; SRMR=0.031; CFI=0.97; NFI= 0.95; and NNFI=0.97). The final scale was administered on 328 elementary school teachers for a follow-up confirmatory factor analysis, which also yielded adequate fit indices. A concurrent criterion validity analysis was also conducted using two distinct criterion scales, which yielded significant moderate-to-high levels of positive correlations. Finally, the results of the reliability analyses suggested that Computer and Internet Self-Efficacy Scale is able to measure elementary school teachers’ senses of efficacy for computer and internet use reliably. © 2015, Ankara University. Cyberbullying, Cybervictimization, and School Burnout Among High School Students
    (T.C. Milli Egitim Bakanligi, 2021) Özer N.; Şad S.N.
The main purpose of this research is to determine the high school students' levels of cyberbullying, cyber-victimization and school burnout. It is also aimed to investigate students? levels of cyberbullying, cyber-victimization and school burnout in terms of gender, school type and grade level variables. Finally, it is aimed to investigate whether cyberbullying and cybervictimization are significant predictors of school burnout. A total of 604 students from 10 different high schools in Kırıkhan district of Hatay province during 2015-2016 academic year participated to the study. Cyber bullying scale and school burnout scale were used to collect data. As a result of the descriptive analyzes, it was found that participating students? frequency of cyberbullying behaviors ranged between "never" to "once a week". The results also showed that the students' levels of burnout differed significantly according to gender and school type, while their cyberbullying behavior showed a significant difference only according to the school type. In terms of school burnout, it was found that compared to the males, female students had experienced burnout more, and students from vocational schools experienced burnout more than students attending to other types of high schools. In terms of cyberbullying, it was found that the students who study at Anatolian High Schools both do more cyberbulling and are cyberbullied more than the students of other high school. As a result of the regression analysis, cyberbullying and cybervictimization were found to be significant predictors of school burnout and they together explain about 11% of the total variance in school burnout scores. © 2021. A Historical Educational Reform: Turkey Rising
(SAGE Publications Inc., 2008) Şad S.N.; Battal N.
This article aims at scrutinizing an example of how education can help a whole nation survive the most fateful times in its history: a world war followed by a struggle for independence. Therefore, the latest times of the Ottoman Empire in general and Ottoman education in particular are outlined to illustrate what the young Turkish republic inherited. Then, the absolute needs of the young republic are discussed, followed by how they were met through the reform movement. The article offers vivid examples, with an emphasis on the young nation's need to reform and refresh the minds via the light of science and reason, as that against the antisecular, dark, and narrow minds of the former regime. A final analysis is devoted to a broad discussion about the importance of the components of this reform movement for the global readership by referring to similar actors and scenarios. © 2008 SAGE Publications.

    Homeschooling
    (2010) Şad S.N.; Akda? M.
Homeschooling can be defined as the practice of conducting partly or entirely the education of children at the age of compulsory formal education by their parents or the tutors assigned by these parents. Homeschooling is a common practice as an alternative to formal education in many countries including especially USA, Canada and several European countries. In these countries, parents usually prefer homeschool for their siblings because of such reasons as their concerns with the school environment and quality of instruction at school; a desire to educate the child on some religious, philosophical or moral basis; special needs of the child; financial reasons; and advancement of distance education technologies. It is reported that homeschooled children are academically more successful than their peers at school. However, there are opposing views about the socialization of the homeschooled children. Most important drawback of this practice is the difficulty of developing and applying the necessary curricula. In our country, current legislation does not include any regulations regarding homeschooling. Given the conditions in our country, homeschooling practice cannot be said to accord with the principle of unity of education. However, with the proper regulations, it can be considered as an alternative and complementary practice which can reduce the burden of open/distance education practices in Turkey.

MUSICAL EVALUATION OF SONGS USED IN ENGLISH LESSONS AT PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS
    (T.C. Milli Egitim Bakanligi, 2022) Danaci E.F.; Dursun B.K.; Şad S.N.
The aim of this research is to evaluate the musical characteristics of the school songs in the 2nd to 8th grade English textbooks. The qualitative case study design was used in this study. For this purpose, a total of 32 school songs in 9 textbooks approved by the Ministry of National Education for use in elementary and secondary school English lessons in the 2017-2018 academic year were examined. The songs were analyzed using the “Expert Evaluation Form” developed by the researchers within the scope of the document analysis method. As a result of the research, it was determined that generally the topics and contents were pedagogically appropriate, but the sound limits of the students were not considered appropriately while choosing the songs and there were prosody errors in the songs. In addition, it is suggested that the sound limits of the children should be taken into consideration while choosing the songs. © 2022. Milli Egitim. All Rights Reserved.

Primary school students' parents' level of involvement into their children's education
    (2013) Şad S.N.; Gürbüztürk O.
The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which parents of elementary students (1st to 5th) participate in their children's education with regard to some variables. The study was designed based on descriptive survey model and comparative and correlational associative models. The sample of the research comprised 1252 parents whose children studied at 1st to 5th classes of six primary schools in Malatya province. The Parental Involvement Scale was used to collect data. As a result of the analysis, it was found out that parents' level of involvement was high for such tasks as communication with children, creating enabling home settings, supporting child's personality development, and helping with homework, but low especially for volunteering. Also mothers were found to support their children's homework significantly more than fathers(?2=.05 and d=.48). Finally, families' monthly income was found to be positively and moderately associated especially with involvement tasks of supporting child's socio-cultural development and creating enabling home settings, and negatively and moderately with volunteering task. © 2013 Educational Consultancy and Research Center.

Students’ teachers’ and parents’ views about transition from Basic Education to Secondary Education (BESE) system
    (Ankara University, 2016) Şad S.N.; Şahiner Y.K.
Present research aimed to investigate the views of students, teachers, and parents about the new system called Transition from Basic Education to Secondary Education (BESE) launched recently in 2013-2014 school year. Convergent parallel mixed research method was used to structure the study. For the quantitative strand of the research, data were collected from a total of 415 participants including 193 8th grade students, 116 teachers, and 106 parents of 8th grade students. The qualitative data were collected from 5 teachers, 6 students and 6 parents who volunteered to participate into the study. The quantitative data were collected using a questionnaire and qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interview forms during fall semester of 2013-2014. Both strands of the study indicated that newly introduced practices such as setting the exams in students’ own school buildings, extending the exam over two semesters, providing a make-up exam, and not using correction-for-guessing formula are generally welcomed by the participants especially in terms of decreasing the exam anxiety and stress. However, results show that the new BESE system seems to fail to resolve adequately some of the rooted problems regarding the commonly complained need for private teaching institutions, courses or lessons, and exam security. © 2015, Ankara University. Technology education in some developed countries and implications for Turkey
    (2010) Şad S.N.; Aribaş S.
In an era in which technology develops at a great pace and affects every aspects of our life, it is reasonable to assume an association between technology and growth. Therefore, the terms technology literacy and teaching technology have gradually gained importance. Developed nations have developed their curricula with the goal to raise individuals who can easily adapt to fast developing technology, use it efficiently, and generate new technologies. This paper intends to determine the place of technology education in developed countries like USA, England and France to compare them with the present situation in Turkey. The comparison revealed that the above cited nations have developed awareness towards technology education and developed their curricula accordingly. Turkey, however, has been rather late to raise similar awareness and unlikely deprived of the supports from civil institutions and organizations. Moreover differences were observed in achieving horizontal integration.
