Öğe Effect of Carbon Black on the High and Low Temperature Properties of Bitumen(Springer, 2018) Geckil, Tacettin; Ahmedzade, Perviz; Alatas, TanerIn the present study, the effect of carbon black (CB) as an additive on resistance of bitumen to delay or prevent rutting and low temperature cracking was investigated. For this purpose, different amounts of CB (0, 5, 10, and 15 wt%) were added into bitumen with PG 58-28. Conventional tests (penetration, softening point, Fraass breaking point, ductility, and kinematic viscosity) and Superpave binder tests (rotational viscosity, dynamic shear rheometer, and bending beam rheometer test) were carried out to determine the physical and rheological properties of pure and modified bitumens. In addition, high and low temperature performance grades of pure and modified bitumens were identified according to Superpave binder specification. The results indicated that the addition of CB increased the stiffness and resistance of bitumen to rutting at high temperatures and resistance to thermal cracking at low temperatures of bitumen. Finally, the bitumen becomes more elastic and less susceptible to temperature changes.Öğe EFFECTS OF CARBON FIBRE ON PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT MIXTURES(Riga Technical Univ-Rtu, 2020) Geckil, Tacettin; Ahmedzade, PervizIn this study, the effects of carbon fibre on improving the performance characteristics of asphalt mixtures were investigated. To this end, four percentages of carbon fibre (0%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 0.7% by weight of bitumen) were used as an additive in asphalt mixtures. The mechanical properties of prepared mixture specimens were investigated using tests such as Marshall Stability and flow, Indirect Tensile Stiffness Modulus, Creep Stiffness, Indirect Tensile Strength, and moisture resistance. The results of tests applied to asphalt mixtures showed that the carbon fibre additive increased the resistance to shear stress by 25%, the fatigue life by 51% at 40 degrees C and the permanent deformation resistance by 2.25 times at 60 degrees C. It also improved the resistance of mixtures to moisture damage by increasing the durability and cohesion of asphalt mixtures. Experimental results indicated that the carbon fibre provided a positive contribution to the performance properties of asphalt pavements.Öğe Effects of Gilsonite on Performance Properties of Bitumen(2022) Ahmedzade, Perviz; Omar, Alqudah; Gunay, Taylan; Geçkil, TacettinThe effectiveness of natural Gilsonite on the performance properties of modified bitumens was studied. Three samples having different ratios of Gilsonite that are 6%, 8% and 10% by weight of base bitumen which was PG 64-16 grade were prepared. The physical properties and storage stabilities of four samples were investigated by means of conventional tests. The short-term and long-term aging processes of bitumens were conducted with rolling thin oven and pressure aging vessel tests, respectively. Rheological properties of bitumens were examined by means of Superpave tests such as rotational viscosity, dynamic shear rheometer and bending beam rheometer. After the rheological study, the low and high temperature performance classes of bitumens were determined by the Superpave specification. The results showed that natural Gilsonite-modified bitumens provide improvement in rheological and physical properties of bitumen, and were found highly compatible with base bitumen. Gilsonite additive significantly increased stiffness and viscosity of bitumen, and improved the resistance against fatigue cracking and rutting of bitumen, without causing a reduction in thermal cracking resistance of bitumen.
