Öğe Comparison of keypads and touch-screen mobile phones/devices as potential risk for microbial contamination(J Infection Developing Countries, 2015) Koroglu, Mehmet; Gunal, Selami; Yildiz, Fatma; Savas, Mehtap; Ozer, Ali; Altindis, MustafaIntroduction: Touch-screen mobile phones/devices (TMPs/Ds) are increasingly used in hospitals. They may act as a mobile reservoir for microbial pathogens. The rates of microbial contamination of TMPs/Ds and keypad mobile phones (KMPs) with respect to different variables including use by healthcare workers (HCWs)/non-HCWs and the demographic characteristics of users were investigated. Methodology: A total of 205 mobile phones/devices were screened for microbial contamination: 76 devices belonged to HCWs and 129 devices belonged to the non-HCW group. By rubbing swabs to front screen, back, keypad, and metallic surfaces of devices, 444 samples were collected. Results: Of 205 mobile phones/devices, 143 (97.9%) of the TMPs/Ds and 58 (98.3%) of the KMPs were positive for microbial contamination, and there were no significant differences in contamination rates between these groups, although TMPs/Ds had significantly higher microbial load than KMPs (p < 0.05). The significant difference in this analysis was attributable to the screen size of mobile phones >= 5 ''. Microbial contamination rates increased significantly as phone size increased (p < 0.05). Higher numbers of coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CNS) were isolated from KMPs than TMPs/Ds (p = 0.049). The incidence of Enterococcus spp. was higher on the KMPs of HCWs, and methicillin resistant CNS was higher from the TMPs/Ds of non-HCWs (p < 0.05). Isolation of CNS, Streptococcus spp. and Escherichia coli was higher from the TMPs/Ds of HCWs (p < 0.05). Conclusions: We found no significant difference between TMP/Ds and KMPs in terms of microbial contamination, but TMP/Ds harboured more colonies and total microbial counts increased with screen size.Öğe Determination of safety status and probiotic properties of Enterococcus strains isolated from traditional cheeses in Turkey(Oxford Univ Press, 2023) Kanak, Eda Kilic; Yilmaz, Suzan Ozturk; Altindis, Mustafa; Tanriverdi, Elif Seren; Otlu, BarisAims This study aimed to evaluate the probiotic properties of Enterococcus strains isolated from Turkish traditional cheeses. Methods and results Fifty-two Enterococcus spp. were taxonomically determined as follows: Enterococcus faecium (26), Enterococcus faecalis (18), Enterococcus durans (6), and Enterococcus italicus (2). The ability of isolates/strains to survive the harsh conditions (acidity and in-vitro gastric solution) of the gastrointestinal tract was established. They also showed auto-aggregation, hydrophobicity, and co-aggregation ability. Hydrophobicities of the strains were found between 0.8%-21%, 0.7%-56%, and 2%-63% for xylene, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, respectively. Autoaggregation values of the Enterococcus strains were 4%-20%, 7%-30%, and 36%-98% after 2, 4, and 24-h incubation, respectively. In this study, the Enterococcus strains tested showed co-aggregation ability with the Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The results of PCR amplification revealed that only five strains possess virulence factor genes (gelE,asa1,cyl A,esp). We determined antibiotic resistance, biofilm forming abilities, and hemolytic activity for safety evaluation of strains. Conclusions In this large and comprehensive study, we found that only few of Enterococcus strains have promising probiotic potential, among which E. faecalis ES1 and E. faecium EM1 showed the best probiotic properties (are the most promising probiotic candidates).Öğe Six-year distribution pattern of hepatitis C virus in Turkey: a multicentre study(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016) Altindis, Mustafa; Dal, Tuba; Akyar, Isin; Karatuna, Onur; Gokahmetoglu, Selma; Ulger, Seda Tezcan; Kulah, CananHepatitis C infection is a public health problem. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the distribution of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes in seven regions of Turkey, by evaluating 7002 patients with chronic HCV in a six-year period. During the 2009-2014 period, serum/plasma samples from 7002 new consecutive HCV RNA positive patients were collected. The female patients were 3867 (55.2%). The genotype distribution of HCV patiens was evaluated by ages and years. Statistical analysis was performed by using the Mann-Whitney test and the chi(2) analysis. During the six-year period, genotype 1b was the most common genotype (67.7%) followed by untypeable genotype 1 (7.7%), genotype 4 (7.3%) and genotype 3 (6.7%). In 2014, genotype 3 was the second most common one (11.3%) and genotype 4 was the third most common one (9.8%). In the group with <25 years old patients, genotype 1b was most common (78.48%, 62/79) between the years of 2009 and 2011, whereas genotype 3 (34.8%, 86/247), between the years of 2012 and 2014. Genotype 1b was the most common in the groups between 26 and 35 years, 36 and 45 years, 46 and 55 years, 56 and 65 years. The rate of genotype 3 was increased from 4.78% to 10.06% and the rate of genotype 4 was increased from 1.3% to 3.84%, from 2009-2011 to 2012-2014. In recent years, genotypes 3 and 4 have gained importance. New therapeutic strategies and survey studies may be required for the modified HCV genotype pattern.
