Öğe Adrenoleukodystrophy: single voxel MR spectroscopy findings (case report)(2004) Alkan A.; Kutlu R.; Aslan M.; Yakinci C.Adrenoleukodystrophy is a rare genetic disorder. Histopathological features of this disorder include demyelination and axonal loss in white matter. We describe a six-year-old boy with significantly decreased N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA)/Creatin (Cr), increased Choline (Cho)/Cr and Myo-inositol (MI)/Cr in parieto-occipital white matter by MR spectroscopy. In contrast to the normal appearance of frontal white matter on MR imaging, increased Cho/Cr and MI/Cr ratios were detected on MR spectroscopy. These changes in involved areas could be an indication of neuroaxonal loss, demyelination and gliosis.Öğe Atlanto-axial subluxation associated with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome(Elsevier BV, 2003) Si?irci A.; Yakinci C.; Alkan A.; Aslan M.; Si?irci A.; Kutlu R.A case of atlanto-axial subluxation in a 5-year-old boy with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) is presented and the imaging findings are evaluated. To the best of our knowledge, atlanto-axial subluxation has not been reported in association with this syndrome. © 2003 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Bilateral split feet do not appear to have ever been a reported feature in any of the published cases of Cornelia de Lange syndrome.Öğe A Collodion baby with hypothyroidism(2010) Dogan D.G.; Aslan M.; Karabiber H.Collodion baby is a rare keratinizing congenital disorder. Although it is milder in degree than harlequin fetus, the infant is at risk for increased water loss, thermal instability, percutaneous toxicity, and infection as a result of an impaired skin barrier function. Here we report on an 11 days-old collodion baby with hypernatremic dehydratation, septicemia and congenital hypothyroidism. To our knowledge congenital hypothyroidism associated with collodion baby is reported in only one case up to date.Öğe Investigation of Serum Interleukin 6, High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein and White Blood Cell Levels during the Diagnosis and Treatment of Paediatric Appendicitis Patients before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2023) Gürünlüoglu K.; Zararsiz G.; Aslan M.; Akbas S.; Tekin M.; Gürünlüoglu S.; Bag H.Introduction: In this study, we prospectively investigated changes in serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and full white blood cell (WBC) counts during the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric patients with appendicitis. We also investigated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and treatment processes of paediatric appendicitis patients. Materials and Methods: A non-perforated appendicitis group (n = 110), a perforated appendicitis group (n = 35) and an appendicitis + COVID-19 group (n = 8) were formed. Blood samples were taken upon admission and every day until the three studied parameters returned to normal values. To investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on paediatric appendicitis patients, the perforated appendicitis rates and the times from the onset of the first symptoms to the operation before and during the pandemic were compared. Results: WBC, IL-6, and hsCRP dropped below the upper limits on the second postoperative day in the non-perforated appendicitis group, four to six days postoperatively in the perforated appendicitis group, and three to six days postoperatively in the appendicitis + COVID-19 group. These parameters were not within normal range in patients who developed complications during follow-up. The time from the onset of abdominal pain to the surgery was significantly longer during than before the pandemic in both the non-perforated appendicitis group and the perforated appendicitis group. Conclusions: Our results show that WBC, IL-6, and hsCRP are useful laboratory parameters that can complete clinical examinations in the diagnosis of appendicitis in paediatric patients and the identification of complications that may develop postoperatively. © 2023 Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications. Moreover, DDH is of great importance with the possibility of being diagnosed late and causing disabilities in patients. Despite the fact that there wasn’t any not a patient with complaints of hip dislocation in this study, the unrecognized cases that admitted to the clinics due to other complaints were also presented. Hip and pelvic radiographs taken from 10.000 children who were referred to emergency and pediatric outpatient clinics of our department with other complaints between 2009-2016 were evaluated. Six patients who had high acetabular index according to the measurements calculated from 4.000 radiographs that were appropriate for evaluation and who were thought to have unrecognized were recalled and their hip radiographs were evaluated. Six patients with suspected hip dysplasia detected from 4000 radiographs, which were suitable for the measurement techniques, were called to the control examination. In the physical examinations and radiographs, abnormal radiographic views of a patient with complete dislocation and two patients with dysplastic hip according to t heir first radiographs were completely resolved. When treatment of DDH can be performed with simple instrumentation or limited surgical interventions in the early infancy, complicated surgical interventions are required during age of walking and after this period, which reduce the success rate. Therefore, we think that every child under one year old who has referred to the clinics for other reasons and those with hip or pelvis graphs are required to be examined in terms of DDH. © 2017, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Great developments in medicine have led to many new words or terms being adopted and used in the same form as the foreign origin. Use of these words in lectures, conferences, briefings and reviews has caused some problems and confusion in use of the language. These problems can only be overcome of a common and standard language form is adopted. The purpose of this study was to raise the problems of the Turkish medical language.
