Öğe Crystal structure of 1,3-dimethylbenzimidazole-2-selenone, C9H10N2Se(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 1999) Aydin, A; Soylu, H; Küçükbay, H; Akkurt, M; Ercan, F[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Detection and genotyping of Epstein-Barr virus by polymerase chain reaction in tissues obtained from cases with Hodgkin's disease in Turkey(Slovak Academic Press Ltd, 1998) Durmaz, R; Aydin, A; Köroglu, M; Aker, H; Özercan, IH; Atik, E; Arici, SIn order to determine the positivity rare and genotype of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in cases with Hodgkin's disease (HD) in Turkey, 40 tissue specimens from HD patients were analysed. Ten non-lymphoid tissue samples from individuals without any evidence for lymphoma were used as controls. The cases with HD included 33 males and 7 females with a mean age of 28 years. Nodular sclerosis was the most prevalent histological subtype (16/40) followed by mixed cellularity (10/40), lymphocyte predominance (9/40), and lymphocyte depletion (5/40). After histopathological evaluation, deparafinisation and lysis of the specimens, one-stage polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and two-stage (nested) PCR assays were performed with the primers common for both EBV genotypes and the primers specific for EBV types 1 and 2, respectively. EBV DNA was detected in 22 of 40 (55%) cases with HD and in 1 of 10 (10%) control specimens. The distribution of EBV DNA positivity according to the histological subtypes was as follows: 10 of 16 (62.5%) for nodular sclerosis, 3 of 5 (60%) for lymphocyte depletion, 5 of 9 (55.6%) for lymphocyte predominance, and 4 of 10 (40%) for mixed cellularity. Although most of the HD patients were males of 15 - 34 years of age, there were no significant differences between EBV positivities obtained From different sex and age groups. The rates of EBV genotypes were 82% for type 1, 9% for type 2, and 9% for both types, respectively.Öğe Disseminated lupus vulgaris and papulonecrotic tuberculid: Case report(Blackwell Science Inc, 2000) Senol, M; Ozcan, A; Aydin, A; Karincaoglu, Y; Sasmaz, S; Sener, SThe incidence of tuberculosis and extrapulmonary forms of this disease is increasing all over the world. Lupus vulgaris is the most prevalent form of cutaneous tuberculosis in Europe and the Middle East, Papulonecrotic tuberculid, the most common form of hyperergic response to mycobacteria or their fragments, is uncommon in children. We report lupus vulgaris with papulonecrotic tuberculid in a 12-year-old girl who had a 3-year history of slowly growing plaques on her trunk, extremities, and the tip of her nose and papuloulcerative lesions over her entire body. A skin biopsy specimen showed minimally caseating granulomatous inflammation, Staining for acid-fast bacilli was negative in both plaques and papules. Polymerase chain reaction identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA in the patient's sputum, gastric fluid, and plaques and was negative in the papules. She was started on antituberculous therapy with four drugs and her lesions responded rapidly.Öğe The effects of twisted ischaemic adnexa managed by detorsion on ovarian viability and histology: an ischaemia-reperfusion rodent model(Oxford Univ Press, 1998) Taskin, O; Birincioglu, M; Aydin, A; Buhur, A; Burak, F; Yilmaz, I; Wheeler, JMThis prospective controlled follow-up study was designed to examine the effects of adnexal torsion on long-term ovarian histology and radical scavenger (FRS) activity, and subsequent viability following the detorsion of twisted ischaemic adnexa, in a primate centre of a university clinic. Adnexal torsion/occlusion was created by twisting the adnexa three times and fixing on to the side wall or by applying vascular clips in cycling female rats at 70 days of age. Following an ischaemic period of 4 to 36 h, the twisted adnexas were surgically removed and fixed. In the second group of rats, following the above ischaemic periods, the torsion/occlusion were relieved by detwisting or removing the vascular clips. Then the animals were reperfused for a week and adnexas were extirpated. After both ischaemia and reperfusion, the removed adnexas were examined histologically and tissue concentrations of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione were determined. Regardless of the ischaemia time, all the twisted adnexas were black-bluish in appearance. Despite the gross ischaemic-haemorrhagic features, histological sections revealed negligible changes, with intact ovarian structure similar to controls in 4-24 h groups. Though decreased compared with controls, the change in tissue concentrations of FRS was not significant in 4-24 h groups. Only the 36 h group showed prominent congestion on all sections and a significant decrease in all radical scavenger concentrations studied. While no longterm reperfusion injury was observed histologically in 4-24 h groups, the 36 h group ended with adnexal necrosis. Our findings support the importance of early diagnosis and conservative surgical management (detorsion) in adnexal torsion. Lack of histological changes and unimpaired FRS metabolism are consistent with the recent data that vascular compromise is caused by venous or lymphatic stasis in early torsion and that adnexal integrity is not correlated with gross ischaemic appearance, thus providing evidence of adnexal resistance against ischaemia.Öğe The effects of twisted ischemic adnexa managed by detorsion on ovarian viability and histology: An ischemia-reperfusion rodent model.(Amer Soc Reproductive Medicine, 1997) Taskin, O; Birincioglu, M; Aydin, A; Buhur, A; Burak, F; Wheeler, JM[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Eosinophilic fasciitis - Progression to linear scleroderma - A case report(Turkish J Pediatrics, 1999) Balat, A; Akinci, A; Turgut, M; Mizrak, B; Aydin, AEosinophilic fasciitis is a rare disease in children. Although changes similar to linear scleroderma have been reported, the outcome is usually good. In this report, a 10-year-old boy who developed eosinophilic fasciitis without a good response to steroids is presented. He progressed to linear scleroderma within months. Our case reinforces the hypothesis that eosinophilic fasciitis may be an early manifestation or a variant of localized scleroderma similar to the other cases in the literature.Öğe Experimental hydatid disease of the liver(Blackwell Science Ltd, 1997) Sahin, M; Aydin, A; Bulbuloglu, E; Ciralik, HHydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosis is an endemic problem in many parts of the world and the liver is the most frequently involved organ. A suitable experimental model for hydatid disease of the liver, resembling naturally infected livers, is established in this study by injection of protoscolices via the mesenteric vein of the mice. This model can be used in assessment of the efficacy of various agents in treatment of hydatid disease of the liver.Öğe Histopathologic examination for Helicobacter pylori as a possible etiopathogenic factor in laryngeal carcinoma(Karger, 2006) Kizilay, A; Saydam, L; Aydin, A; Kalcioglu, MT; Ozturan, O; Aydin, NEObjective: We investigated the presence of Helicobacter pylori in laryngeal cancer specimens to reveal whether or not this is a risk factor in the development of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Methods: Sixty-nine total laryngectomy specimens with the pathologic diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma and 30 laryngeal tissue samples that had been taken for the investigation of nonneoplastic (polyp, nodule) diseases were studied. Specimens of both tumor and control groups were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and modified Giemsa stains, and then they were examined under a light microscope. Results: In both groups, H. pylori could not be found in any of the cases. Conclusion: The histologic examination of our series did not reveal any clue related to the possible etiologic association between H. pylori and squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.Öğe Investigation of the relationship between Epstein-Barr virus and ordinary gastric carcinoma using the nested polymerase chain reaction(Slovak Academic Press Ltd, 1998) Durmaz, R; Aydin, A; Köroglu, M; Durmaz, B; Çiralik, HTo investigate whether Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with ordinary gastric carcinoma and to determine its genotype, samples from ordinary gastric carcinoma from 65 patients (40 males, 20 females) and 21 endoscopic biopsies from 7 individuals with non-neoplastic mucosa were analysed using one-stage and nested (two-stage) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. The nested PCR assay yielded 56.9% (37/65) and 52.3% (11/21) positivity for the ordinary gastric carcinoma and control cases, respectively; these results were significantly than those of the one-stage PCR assay(13.5% and 0%, respectively). The EBV positivity showed similar rate in male and female patients (60% versus 52%, P > 0.05). The dominant genotype of EBV was 1 (92%) followed by mixture of 1+2 (5.4%) and 2 (2.6%). In conclusion, similar positivity rates of EBV in neoplastic and non-neoplastic tissues suggest that the relationship of this virus to the ordinary gastric carcinoma is not clear.Öğe Multifocal omental mesenteric inflammatory pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma)(Hippokrates Verlag Gmbh, 1999) Koltuksuz, U; Gürsoy, MH; Mutus, M; Aydin, A; Aydinc, M; Çetin, S; Çiralik, HInflammatory pseudotumor (IP) is an uncommon benign tumor during childhood. The most common location is lung, and sporadic cases of IP with extrapulmonary involvement such as liver and abdomen are reported. However, the IP among the reported cases have appeared as solitary masses. A multifocal IP in a 14-year-old girl presumed to result following an Entamoeba histolytica infestation is reported.Öğe Preparation and X-ray structure of bis(1-methyl-3-ethylbenzimidazolidine-2-ylium) tetrafluoroborate(R Oldenbourg Verlag, 1998) Aydin, A; Soylu, H; Gunes, B; Akkurt, M; Ercan, E; Kucukbay, H; Cetinkaya, EThe title compound, C20H24B2F8N4, crystalises monoclinic (space group C2, Z = 4, a = 23.797(5) Angstrom, b = 8.330(2) Angstrom, c = 11.471(2) Angstrom, beta = 90.17(2)degrees. R = 0.084 for 1922 [1 greater than or equal to 2 sigma(I)]. The most notable features are the values of the C-C bond length [1.47(1) Angstrom], of the adjacent endocyclic N-C bond length [1.363(1) Angstrom] the torsion angle about the central C-C bond [83 degrees] and the nearly trigonal planar environment of the nitrogen atom.Öğe Sensitivity of two-stage PCR amplification for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in paraffin-embedded tissues(Elsevier Science Bv, 1997) Durmaz, R; Aydin, A; Durmaz, B; Aydin, NE; Akbasak, BS; Gunal, SIn order to improve the sensitivity of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of mycobacterial DNA in paraffin-embedded tissues, a new approach with two sets of specific primers in two-stage PCR was employed in specimens obtained from tuberculosis patients and controls. Thirty-nine paraffin blocks selected from patients who had been diagnosed as having tuberculosis by radiological evaluations, histopathological findings, land clinical symptoms and signs including response to antituberculous treatment were examined. The control group consisted of 10 specimens from individuals that were proved to be negative for tuberculosis. After deparaffinization, lysis, phenol-chloroform extraction, and ethanol precipitation, the isolated DNA was amplified by PCR. Initially, all specimens were examined by the one-stage PCR using specific primers for 123-base pair (bp) fragment in IS6110 of mycobacterial DNA which yielded positive results only in 3 out of 39 (7.7%). In the two-stage PCR technique, 245-bp fragment of mycobacterial DNA was amplified at the first-step, then the PCR products were reamplified using the second specific primer pairs for 123-bp fragment. The true positivity of the two-stage PCR was 84.6% (33/39). The results indicate that two-stage PCR is more sensitive than one-stage (84.6% vs. 7.7%). All control specimens were negative by both PCR amplification methods, indicating that specificity of both methods was high. When the two-stage amplification was used, PCR positivity in the specimens obtained from different tissues was as follows: peritoneal and omental biopsies, 4/4; bone biopsies, 3/3; lymph node biopsies, 12/14; genito-urinary biopsies, 7/9; skin biopsies, 4/6; and one from each lung, breast, and pleural biopsies. PCR showed a good correlation with the granulomatous tissue reaction resulting in a 83.8% (31/37) positivity. The results indicate that the two-stage PCR amplification can be used for detection of M. tuberculosis in paraffin-embedded tissues and is a useful technique in confirming tuberculosis in patients with clinically suspected disease who have acid-fast stain-negative. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.Öğe Teratoma presenting as a cystic lesion on the chest wall -: Case report(Taylor & Francis As, 2000) Soysal, Ö; Kutlu, R; Saraç, K; Aydin, A; Özen, SA 28-year-old woman presented with a rare case of chest-wall teratoma. Computed tomography of a cystic lesion located in the anterior chest wall revealed a hyperdense object with the appearance of a tooth. The cystic mass was totally excised via a chest-wall incision without thoracotomy, Pathologic examination showed a benign teratoma containing an immature tooth.Öğe Tularemia(Excerpta Medica Inc, 1999) Senol, M; Özcan, A; Karincaoglu, Y; Aydin, A; Özerol, IHTularemia is an arthropod-borne infectious disease caused by Francisella tularensis, a gram-negative microorganism that normally resides in a wide range of wild and domestic animals, The disease is characterized by a sudden onset with high fever, headache, malaise, chills, myalgia, and arthralgia, A short time after exposure, an inflamed and ulcerated lesion rapidly appears at the site of entry, A regional lymphadenopathy follows the cutaneous presentation. Cultures from the lesions or blood generally give negative results. Histopathologic examination reveals either a nonspecific inflammatory infiltrate or an infectious granuloma, The most useful laboratory procedure in the diagnosis of tularemia is serologic tests. Streptomycin, gentamicin, and tetracycline are the drugs of choice in the treatment, Quinolones are also effective. Tularemia is fairly rare in Turkey. We present a typical case of ulceroglandular tularemia transmitted from a sheep to a young man.
