Öğe Changes in the ocular surface: Initial observations from a pilot study of diagnostic radiology technicians (radiographers)(2002) Gürdal C.; Aydin S.; Onmuş H.; Şengör T.; Özarar M.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and cytological changes in the ocular surface of radiology technicians (radiographers) exposed to diagnostic doses of radiation. The Schirmer, Rose Bengal staining and Tear-Break-Up-Time tear function tests were carried out following routine ophthalmic examination in 15 radiology technicians (group I) and 15 controls (group II). Impression cytology was performed by placing 5-mm-thick half-circular cellulose acetate filter paper in the upper and lower quadrants around the limbus. The cytological evaluation was made using the mapping technique. Significantly increased dry eye was detected in group I. In the impression cytology investigation, squamous metaplasia and intraepithelial lymphocytic infiltration was noted in all the group-I cases. A distinct change was observed between the regions showing squamous metaplasia and neigbouring normal epithelial cell structure. Dry eye and ocular surface cytological changes were observed in diagnostic radiology technicians. Routine ophthalmic evaluation of radiology technicians would be beneficial in detecting early cytological changes and dry eye.Öğe A comparative study on the motivation and attitudes of language learners of online distance and traditional in-classroom education(Anadolu Universitesi, 2016) Genc G.; Kulusakli E.; Aydin S.In recent years, the increase in the use of computer and the internet has led to a change in the traditional concept of formal education today. Distance learning as a more student-centered system has been frequently used at universities. In this context, education has been applied to the individuals consisting of all age groups in accordance with their aspirations, expectations and interest in a more flexible way. This study aims to determine and compare the motivation and attitudes of language learners of online distance and traditional in-classroom education, in a state university in Turkey. Participants were 500 undergraduate university students in various disciplines. About 250 (half) of the participants studied English as a foreign language through traditional in-classroom education whereas the rest of the participants (250) studied English through online distance education in the same university by the same instructors. Two questionnaires (one to evaluate motivation level and one to evaluate attitudes of the participants related to English as a foreign language) and a background information form investigating individual information of the participants were used to collect data from the students of nine faculties at the University (including Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Medicine). According to the nature of the research, the study used descriptive statistics (frequencies, range, means, and standard deviations), t-test and ANOVA as the statistical analysis methods. All collected data were coded and computerized using the SPSS software and the alpha level for the tests was set at .05. After calculating each participant's motivation and attitudes scores, their scores were compared to the variables selected for the study and each other. The findings indicated statistically significant relationships between motivation and attitudes of the participants and some individual variables. Some conclusions were reached based on the findings of the research and some recommendations and suggestions were made for future research into areas not covered by this study.Öğe Serum levels of apelin, salusin-alpha and salusin-beta in normal pregnancy and preeclampsia(2012) Simsek Y.; Celik O.; Yilmaz E.; Karaer A.; Dogan C.; Aydin S.; Ozer A.Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the serum apelin, salusin-alpha and salusin-beta levels and preeclampsia. Method: Twenty-one healthy pregnant women (control group) and 48 patients with preeclampsia (study group) were included in the study between August 2010 and February 2011. Serum apelin, salusin-alpha and salusin-beta levels of the groups were compared. Results: The patients in the study group were divided into two categories: mild preeclampsia and severe preeclampsia. The mild preeclampsia group consisted of 31 patients, and the severe preeclampsia group consisted of 17 patients. Serum salusin-alpha and salusin-beta levels of the control and study groups were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Apelin levels were statistically significantly higher in the study group. No statistically significant difference was detected between the mild and severe preeclampsia groups in terms of the mean serum apelin levels. Conclusion: The serum levels of apelin were higher in the pregnant women with preeclampsia; however, there was no positive relationship between serum salusin-alpha and salusin-beta levels and the disease. Larger prospective studies are needed to validate our findings. © 2012 Informa UK, Ltd.Öğe Students’ Motivation toward Computer-Based Language Learning(SAGE Publications Inc., 2011) Genç G.; Aydin S.The present article examined some factors affecting the motivation level of the preparatory school students in using a web-based computer-assisted language-learning course. The sample group of the study consisted of 126 English-as-a-foreign-language learners at a preparatory school of a state university. After performing statistical analyses (t-test and analysis of variance) to the data, it was found that there were no statistical differences between such selected demographic variables as learners’ age, gender, grades, compulsory and optional status, type of high school, parents’ educational status, the period of the participants’ language-learning process, and experience of computer use The only variable found to be statistically significant was the degree of importance of learning English for the participants; more than half the participants possess moderately high motivation level. Finally, some practical recommendations were noted. © 2011 SAGE Publications.
