Compound odontoma - A case report
(2017) Bhat, Supriya; Babu, Subhas G; Castelino, Renita Lorina; Madi, Medhini; Achalli, Sonika; Madiyal, Ananya
Odontomas are a common type of odontogenic tumors which are regarded as developmental anomalies (hamartomas) rather than a true neoplasm. They occur more commonly in the permanent dentition and are rarely associated with the primary dentition. An odontome comprises of the hard tissues which are laid down in an abnormal pattern. They are considered to be hamartomas rather than neoplasms as they contain the tissues which are native to teeth i.e. enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp tissue. In this context, we present the case of a compound odontome in the maxillary left posterior region, which posed as an obstacle to the erupting canine, thus causing its impaction.

    Goldenhar syndrome-a case report
(2017) Buch, Sajad Ahmad; Babu, Subhas G; Hegde, Shruthi; Ajila, Vidya; Rao, Shruthi
Goldenhar syndrome is a rare developmental disorder affecting first and second branchial arches with its manifestations in multiple systems of the body. The aetiology of the syndrome is not clear however many theories have been proposed and described. It is characterised by presence of epibulbar dermoids, fistulas and preauricular appendages. In addition to facial defects the syndrome also manifests abnormalities in renal, genitourinary, cardiac and skeletal systems. Asymmetry in Goldenhar syndrome is usually obvious at the time of birth and increases with age, particularly at puberty. The ear defects can be both unilateral and bilateral but involvement of right ear is more common. To confirm diagnosis, it is imperative to have at least microtia and preauricular or auricular defects. The prognosis of the condition is good in patients who have no complicated systemic associations. A multidisciplinary team of doctors is required for successful treatment of the syndrome. We present here a case of Goldenhar syndrome in an 8-year-old girl with classic manifestations.

Marfan syndrome: A case report with review of literature
(2017) Castelino, Renita Lorina; Ka, Fazil; Babu, Subhas G; Balan, Preethi; Bhat, Supriya
Marfan syndrome is a systemic condition involving the connective tissue. The syndrome is inherited by autosomal dominant trait. Affected persons carry a mutation in the gene that encodes fibrillin-1 which is a connective tissue protein. The incidence of this syndrome is one in ten thousand live births with an equal predilection for both the genders. The syndrome is a collection of generalized manifestations involving the skeleton, eyes, heart, lungs, and the large blood vessels. The individual affected by this syndrome is usually tall and lean with various systemic abnormalities. A case of Marfan syndrome is reported here with review of literature.

Nuclear imaging in the field of dentistry: A review
(2017) Buch, Sajad Ahmad; Babu, Subhas G; Castelino, Renita Lorina; Rao, Shruthi; Madiyal, Ananya; Bhat, Supriya
Nuclear medicine(NM) imaging has played a vital role in the early diagnosis of disease in the recent decades. Although in the present time’s conventional radiographs, Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), Computed Tomography (CT), and other alike imaging modalities are being routinely used for diagnosis and treatment purposes in the head and neck region, NM has been in use only for certain oral and maxillofacial pathologies. NM is an impressive and influential imaging means which relies on metabolic and other physiological processes of tissues revealing accurate functional and biochemical aspects of tissues and help in precise diagnosis. Radionuclide imaging involves the use radioactive isotopes that emit gamma (γ) rays. The γ rays thus emitted are detected by a gamma camera and different planar images are formed and shows the location of the radionuclides in the body. The technique provides an early marker of the disease after allowing the measurement of tissue function in vivo. Even though NM is not used on day to day basis in the field of dentistry, the dental professional must acquire the requisite information about its various uses. This review is an attempt at making a dental professional familiar with the functioning of NM imaging in the oral and maxillofacial region.

Pemphigus vulgaris presenting as bleeding gums: A case report
(2017) Rao, Shruthi; Hegde, Shruthi; Ajila, Vidya; Babu, Subhas G; Buch, Sajad Ahmad
Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a chronic autoimmune disease which may be potentially life threatening. PV manifests as blisters and erosions of the skin and the mucous membrane. It can manifest initially as oral lesions. It is essential to diagnose this condition early in order to avoid the serious complications. We describe a case of 58-year-old male presented with bleeding gums and burning sensation for 6 months. Patient was previously misdiagnosed as gingivitis. Though it is rare for pemphigus vulgaris to present with gingival involvement as primary site of manifestation, our case emphasizes the importance of thorough history and clinical examination for the early diagnosis and management of such condition.

A rare co-occurrence of facial talon’s cusp on fused maxillary permanent central and lateral incisor
(2017) Pillai, Devika S; Babu, Subhas G; Castelino, Renita Lorina; Ram G, Sachin; Bhat, Supriya; Rao, Kumuda
Fusion is a developmental anomaly of dental hard tissues characterised by the union of two adjacent teeth. It can be complete or incomplete and commonly seen in deciduous than in the permanent dentition with higher frequency in anterior maxillary regions. Talon’s cusp is an unusual cuspal projection from the lingual aspect of the tooth with normal enamel and dentin and varying degree of pulp tissue. It commonly affects the permanent maxillary lateral incisors followed by central incisors and canines. Talon cusp is mostly found on the lingual aspect of teeth and rarely it projects from the facial aspect. We hereby report a case of fusion of permanent left central and lateral incisor with facial talon cusp which is rarely reported.

Use of cone beam computed tomography in the diagnosis and treatment planning of follicular ameloblastoma: A case report with review of literature
(2017) Madiyal, Ananya; Babu, Subhas G; Castelino, Renita Lorina; Ajila, Vidya; Bhat, Supriya; Achalli, Sonika; Madi, Medhini; Rao, Kumuda
Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally invasive odontogenic tumor. It is found most often in the posterior mandible and occurs as a slow growing painless mass. Diagnosis is made based on the clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features. Newer imaging modalities such as cone beam computed tomography offer massive advantage over traditional radiography thereby helping in better diagnosis and treatment planning. The goal of treatment is complete elimination of the tumor with reconstruction of the defect. This can be achieved with precise radiographic images concerning the size and extension of the lesion as is obtained by cone beam computed tomography. We present here a case of follicular ameloblastoma with a detailed description of its various radiographic features thereby improving the body of knowledge regarding the use of this new development in the field of imaging.
