Travel health attitudes among Turkish business travellers to African countries
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2016) Selcuk, Engin Burak; Kayabas, Uner; Binbasioglu, Hulisi; Otlu, Bads; Bayindir, Yasar; Bozdogan, Bulent; Karatas, Mehmet
Background: The number of international travellers is increasing worldwide. Although health risks related to international travel are important and generally well understood, the perception of these risks was unclear among Turkish travellers. We aimed to evaluate the attitudes and health risk awareness of Turkish travellers travelling to African countries. Method: A survey was performed of Turkish travellers bound forAfrica from Istanbul International Ataturk Airport in July 2013. Results: A total of 124 travellers were enrolled in the study. Among them, 62.9% had information about their destination but only 11.3% had looked for information on health problems related to travel and their destination. Of all travellers, 53.2% had at least one vaccination before travelling. The most commonly administered vaccine was for typhoid. Among the travellers, 69.3% and 80.6% had no idea about yellow fever vaccination and malaria prophylaxis, respectively. A positive correlation was found between a higher level of travellers' education and receiving the recommended vaccination for the destination. Conclusions: Our study revealed significant gaps in the vaccination and chemoprophylaxis uptake of Turkish travellers departing to Africa. An awareness and training program should be developed for travellers, as well as public health workers, to address health risks related to travel. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

TURKISH TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY STUDENTS' ATTITUDES TOWARD THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
(Univ Rijeka, Faculty Tourism & Hospitality Management, Opatija, 2019) Binbasioglu, Hulisi; Sad, Suleyman Nihat
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to define Turkish tourism students' stands regarding international community, i.e. international posture, which is a neglected area of research in terms of tourism and foreign language education curricula. Design - This study was designed based on a baseline survey model followed by an associational design. The former phase aimed to determine the tertiary Turkish tourism students' stands regarding the international community. The second phase explored the relevance of participants' international posture to gender, school type, and employment background in jobs requiring contact with foreigners, perceived proficiency in languages including English, German, and Russian. Methodology - Data were first analyzed using descriptive statistics, then compared by gender and school type using t-test and ANOVA, and finally correlations between students' stands regarding the international community and employment background and perceived proficiency in different languages were tested. Findings - Results suggested that Turkish tourism students see themselves moderately connected to the international community and are moderately interested in international affairs and are moderately ready to interact with people other than Turkish. Originality of the research - The productivity and sustainability of tourism industry depend largely on the well-educated staff; however, the quality of education of tourism students, especially on intercultural awareness, is an under-researched issue.
