    Biostimulatory Effects of Diode Laser and Ozone on Wound Healing in Rats

    Objective: Diode laser and ozone can be used to healing of skin wounds. The aim of this study is to evaluate the biostimulatory effects of diode laser and ozone on the healing of sutured skin wounds in rats. Materials and Methods: In this study, 21 adult males Wistar albino rats were used. Three 1-cm-longs, full-thickness incisions were applied to the back of each animal and closed with sutures. Diode laser treatment, irrigation with 0.9% saline solution and ozone therapy was applied to the wounds through 7 days. Animals were euthanized on the 3rd, 7th, and 14th days after treatment, and all wounds were surgically removed for histopathological evaluation. Results: According to histological results, a statistically significant difference was found among the three treatment methods in acute inflammatory reactions on 3rd day (p<0.05). Ozone treatment reduced the intensity of acute inflammatory reactions by the 3rd day (p<0.05). In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between the follow-up periods in all treatment groups for fibrosis (p<0.01). Conclusion: It was found that ozone treatment was more effective when compared to the other treatments for reducing the intensity of acute inflammatory reactions on the healing of sutured skin wounds.

    Clinical and Pathological Findings on Intoxication by Yellow Phosphorus After Ingesting Firework Cracker: A Rare Case of Autopsy

    Yellow phosphorus is a toxic substance used in the production of firework cracker, fireworks, ammunition and agricultural dung. When ingested, it shows its effects mainly in the liver, the kidneys, and the brain. A four-year-old girl had died as a result of acute hepatic failure caused by ingesting a firework cracker. The case showed high levels of hepatic enzymes, along with non-specific signs such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Autopsy revealed diffuse microvesicular steatosis in the liver and disseminated degeneration in the proximal tubules of the kidneys. In cases with concomitant hepatorenal failure and cardiovascular collapse, death is inevitable. However, when only hepatic failure develops, hepatic transplantation may be lifesaving. Although intoxication from ingesting yellow phosphorus has a very high rate of mortality, forensic cases are extremely rare in the literature.

    Cystic Adrenal Lymphangioma - Report of two cases and review of the literature

    Cystic adrenal lymphangiomas are very rare, benign vascular lesions. They are usually found during a work up for abdominal pain or incidentally during imaging studies for an unrelated cause. We report two cases of cystic adrenal lymphangiomas. They presented with flank discomfort, hypertension and flushing. Their laboratory findings were in normal limits. Radio logic imagings showed adrenal cystic neoplasm and the patients underwent adrenelectomy. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical findings were consistent with lymphangioma. Cystic lymphangiomas may imitate other adrenal neoplasms and must be kept in mind in the clinical and radiologic differential diagnosis of cystic adrenal lesions.

    Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma associated with hyaline-vascular castleman's disease

    Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the head and neck region, associated with Castleman's disease (CD), is an extremely rare entity. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case demonstrating the transformation of the former into the latter as documented in the same lymph node disection material. A 45-year-old female presented to our hospital with right sided neck swelling. Radio logic imaging showed a well defined 3.5x3.5cm mass of soft tissue at the right side of the neck with multiple bilateral cervical lymph nodes. Excision of the right neck mass with lymph node disection was performed. Microscopic examination and immunohistochemical findings showed features of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. The associated lymph nodes exhibited changes consistent with hyaline-vascular type CD, follicular dendritic cell hyperplasia and foci of overgrowth in which FDCS possibly evolved. This report confirms the evolving of FDCS in the setting of follicular dendritic cell hyperplasia occurring in Castleman's disease.

    Immunohistochemical Expressions of the Antimicrobial Peptides (hBD-3 and hCAP-18/LL-37) in Colon, Stomach and Lung Adenocarcinomas

    This study investigated the immunohistochemical staining characteristics of human beta defensin-3 (hBD-3) and human cationic antimicrobial peptide-18/cathelicidin (hCAP-18/LL-37) in colon, stomach and lung adenocarcinomas and normal tissues (periphery to tumor tissues) from 22, 24 and 24 patients, respectively. Expressions of hBD-3 and hCAP-18/LL-37 were assessed by immunohistochemistry for colon, stomach and lung adenocarcinomas of 70 patients from Ataturk Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital and Kecioren Training and Research Hospital. both located in Ankara, Turkey. The differences between the expressions of hBD-3 and hCAP-18/LL-37 in normal and carcinoma tissues were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U Test. When the normal and tumor tissues of these cases were compared according to their staining intensity of positive staining, the hBD-3 and hCAP-18/LL-37 expressions in colon, stomach and lung adenocarcinomas cells were significantly higher than those in normal cells (p<0.05). Immunostaining of HBD-3 and hCAP-18/LL-37 was found to be a marker of malignancy in colon, stomach and lung adenocarcinomas. The expressions of hBD-3 and hCAP-18/LL-37 were, for the first time, shown to be significantly altered in colon, stomach and lung adenocarcinomas as compared to controls. In conclusion, the present findings suggest that beside the antimicrobial activity of Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs), hBD-3 and hCAP-18/LL-37 can also play a role in the pathogenesis of colon, stomach and lung adenocarcinomas.
