    Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviors of Families on Rotavirus Vaccine

    Abstract: Background: Rotavirus is the most common and important cause of gastroenteritis in the newborn and young childrenworldwide. Vaccination is the main way to prevent Rotavirus infection. The aim of the present study is to determine the levelof knowledge about the Rotavirus vaccine and attitudes towards the vaccination in families having children between the agesof 0 and 2 taking the socio-demographic characteristics into account. Methods: The study was carried out by applying aquestionnaire to the parents who admitted to the Pediatrics Outpatient Clinic and Pediatric Emergency Department of AnkaraResearch and Training Hospital between April 2011 and April 2012. Statistical analyses were performed by using the SPSS 19program. Results: A total of 1005 parents were surveyed; 857 (85.3%) participants were not aware of Rotavirus vaccinationand 873 (86.9%) were not aware of Rotavirus. Among 148 participants who knew Rotavirus vaccination, only 36 hadvaccination. Conclusion: Awareness of Rotavirus vaccine and its frequency of application were found much lower thanexpected. Socio-demographic characteristics of the parents and the attitudes of the physicians may be suggested to affect thefrequency of vaccination. In order to increase vaccination rates, it is important for health care professionals and especially forphysicians to inform the parents about Rotavirus vaccination.
