Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity of the Turkish version of moral courage scale for physicians
(Public Library Science, 2025) Yilmaz, Serife; Guven, Gamze Ozbek; Inceoglu, Feyza
Aim Physicians, like other healthcare professionals, frequently encounter situations requiring moral courage in their professional lives. However, studies on the moral courage of physicians are limited in the literature. This study aims to evaluate the Turkish adaptation, validity, and reliability of the Moral Courage Scale for Physicians (MCSP) and to contribute to national and international studies on moral courage among physicians. Materials and methods This methodological study involved the adaptation, validation, and reliability assessment of the MCSP in Turkish. The scale's internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and the total correlation coefficients for the items were calculated. Test-retest reliability was assessed using a two-group design. Results The Turkish version of the MCSP demonstrated high internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.91. The total correlation coefficients for the items ranged from 0.387 to 0.797. A significant positive correlation was found between the test and retest scores of the MCSP (p < 0.05). Conclusion The Turkish version of the MCSP is a valid and reliable tool for assessing moral courage among physicians.

(Cell Press, 2024) Guven, Gamze Ozbek; Yilmaz, Serife; Inceoglu, Feyza
The aim of this study is to determine the levels of anxiety and readiness among medical students regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and examine the relationship between these factors. The research was conducted on medical students, and the data was collected through face-to-face and online surveys between April and June 2022. The study utilized a socio-demographic information form, an AI anxiety scale, and a medical AI readiness scale. The data collected from a total of 542 students were analyzed using the Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used for reliability analysis. A path diagram was created using AMOS 24, and structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis was applied. The findings of the study indicate that medical students have a moderate level of readiness and a high level of anxiety regarding AI. Furthermore, an inverse relationship was found between AI readiness and AI anxiety. These results highlight the importance of increasing the preparedness of medical students for AI applications and reducing their anxieties. The study suggests the inclusion of AI in the medical curriculum and the development of a standardized curriculum to facilitate its teaching.

Effect of Euthanasia Education on the Views of Nursing Students
(Jimma Univ, Ethiopia, 2022) Yilmaz, Serife; Guven, Gamze Ozbek
BACKGROUND: Nurses play an important role in the healthcare team and are closely involved in the daily care of patients. Sometimes, they are involved in the care of terminal patients, who may thus be confronted with difficult end-of-life decisions such as euthanasia. Therefore, it is important to determine the views on euthanasia of nursing students who will work in health care and prepare them for such situations in their professional life. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of euthanasia education on nursing students' opinions. METHODS: Pretest-posttest single group semi-experimental method was used in the study. Data were obtained with two surveys carried out both before and after education. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, or Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze. RESULTS: Euthanasia education provided students with a different perspective. The results indicated that 56.4% of the students that they knew about euthanasia partially enough before education. After the training, 65.5% of them indicated that they had enough knowledge. Rate of those who are undecided on many questions before education decreased. CONCLUSION: Education can significantly change nursing students' approach to euthanasia and provides ethical awareness. Euthanasia and related topics should be added to the curriculum. Students should be encouraged to express their opinions and questions about euthanasia. Students should receive ethics education to prepare them to deal with euthanasia-related issues in their professional lives.

The effect of the pandemic on the professional values of nurses in Turkiye: a phenomenological approach
(Kare Publ, 2023) Guven, Gamze Ozbek; Yilmaz, Serife
Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic affected healthcare professionals as well as all sectors of society. Nurses working in close contact with patients were particularly affected during this process, and it is important to reveal its effects on the professional values of nurses. This study aims to explore the effect of the pandemic on the professional values of nurses caring for patients with COVID-19. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological research method was used in the study. The research was conducted with 20 nurses who care for patients with COVID-19 in the intensive care units of different provinces of Turkiye. A semi -structured interview form prepared based on the literature was used to collect the data, which were obtained by the researchers through face-to-face interviews. Results: In this study, five categories with themes and subthemes emerged: (1) the professional values of nurses during the pandemic; (2) the impact of the pandemic on professional values; (3) the emotional state of nurses regarding the pandemic process; (4) the support factors of nurses in the pandemic process; and (5) the expectations of nurses. It was revealed that the professional values of nurses were affected during the pandemic process. The situations that made nurses feel bad, weak, good, and strong during the pandemic process and what their expectations were determined. Conclusion: In our study, we found that nurses managed to preserve their professional values even when they worked under difficult conditions during the pandemic. They have shown that they have an important role in the health army during the pandemic process with the values they maintain by strengthening the opposite without losing. It is impor-tant to transfer the experiences of nurses during the pandemic to the new generation of nurses and conduct training to maintain professional values.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COVID-19 BURNOUT AND THE MORAL SENSITIVITY OF HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
(Univ Chile, Centro Interdisciplinario Estudios Bioetica, 2023) Yilmaz, Serife; Guven, Gamze Ozbek; Demirci, Mehmet; Karatas, Mehmet
This study aimed to examine the relationship between the burnout of physicians and nurses and their moral sensitivity during the pandemic. This was a descriptive and correlational study. This study was carried out with physicians and nurses who were continuing to work actively during the pandemic. Snowboard sampling method was utilized. The total mean score of the participants on the MSQ was 90.78 +/- 19.10. The total mean score of the COVID-19 Burnout Scale was 34.52 +/- 9.65. A statistically weak and significant correlation was found between the COVID-19 Burnout Scale and the MSQ total score, as well as the benefit and conflict sub-dimensions. It was determined that as MSQ total scores, benefit and conflict scores decreased in healthcare workers, COVID-19 burnout scores increased. In our study, the moral sensitivity of the participants was found to be moderate, and their burnout levels were found to be high. Although there was a weak relationship, it was observed that burnout levels increased as moral sensitivity levels increased. It is crucial that we learn from pandemic experiences and transfer this knowledge to future generations. In particular, we must assimilate these important lessons into training in order to develop and protect the moral sensitivity of healthcare professionals.

Trauma levels and perspectives on dignified death among nurses and physicians who directly experienced the recent earthquake
(Public Library Science, 2024) Guven, Gamze Ozbek; Karatas, Mehmet; Kaynak, Sibel
Background Unexpected, sudden, and tragic losses can prompt us to reflect on the concept of a good death. The earthquake disaster that struck our country in 2023 vividly demonstrated the challenging impact of such events, which can turn lives upside down and compel us to question the notion of a good death. This study aims to determine the perceptions of a good death and the levels of trauma experienced by physicians and nurses who directly witnessed the earthquake disaster, and to understand the relationship between these factors. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted between October 1 and December 31, 2023, using phone interviews facilitated by a web-based Google form. Data were collected from 560 healthcare professionals (280 nurses and 280 doctors) working in hospitals located in Kahramanmara & scedil;, Hatay, Malatya, and Ad & imath;yaman provinces in Turkiye, which were directly impacted by the earthquake of February 6, 2023, and who consented to participate in the study. Trauma levels were assessed using the Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Determination Scale, and perceptions of a good death were evaluated using the Good Death Scale (GDS). Data were analyzed using SPSS 25 and AMOS 24 software. Normal distribution was checked with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test. Independent t-tests were used to compare independent binary groups, Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between scale scores, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to evaluate the reliability of the scales (Good Death Scale: 0.931; Trauma Scale: 0.957). Structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis were conducted to examine the relationship between scale scores according to the profession variable. Findings The mean score for the perception of a good death was found to be 52.76 +/- 8.77 for physicians and 55.84 +/- 9.63 for nurses. A statistically significant difference was detected between physicians and nurses in the psychosocial spirituality, personal control, and clinical sub-dimensions of the scale (p<0.05). The mean trauma scores were 56.81 +/- 17.58 for physicians and 64.82 +/- 18.56 for nurses. A significant difference was found in the trauma scale and its sub-dimensions (excitement limitation, emotional, cognitive restructuring, sleep problems) (p<0.05). It was observed that higher trauma levels positively influenced good death perception scores. Conclusion This study reveals that healthcare workers are deeply affected psychologically by major disasters, with high levels of trauma. A significant relationship was found between trauma levels and perceptions of a good death. These findings provide an important basis for future research to understand how trauma shapes the lives and job performance of healthcare workers in the long term.
