Endogenous poly amine content in the white rot fungi Coriolus (Trametes) versicolor and Funaiia trogii
    (2010) Mutlu F.; Apohan E.; Kahraman S.
In this study, changes in the content of polyamines (PAs) of the white rot fungi Coriolus (Trametes) versicolor ATCC 200801 and Funaiia trogii ATCC 200800 were investigated. The effects of various parameters such as initial pH, temperature, time period and the agitation rate were studied and the optimal experimental conditions were decided. Spermidine (Spd) was the most abundant polyamine in two white rot fungi. The highest Spd content was obtained at 30°C temperature, 150 rev/min agitation rate and pH 3.0 for C. versicolor for 6 day incubation period. Whereas, the highest Spd content for F. trogii was found at 40°C temperature, 50 rev/min agitation rate and pH 5.0 in 6 day incubation period. As a conclusion, our data show that white rot fungi produce spermidine at determining optimal culture conditions. Moreover our results demonstrate that it is possible to increase the endogenous Spd content by selecting the most optimal conditions.

Evaluation of pre-service science teachers’ argumentation skills, knowledge levels and attitudes regarding organ transplantation and donation
(Eurasian Society of Educational Research, 2019) Gurkan G.; Kahraman S.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate pre-service science teachers’ argumentation skills, attitudes and knowledge levels regarding organ transplantation and donation (OTD). Teachers play a fundamental role in providing information to children/adolescents and could influence their attitudes. Organ transplantation is a life-saving hope for many people, but shortage of organs for transplantation is a universal problem. Having a positive attitude and true knowledge are essential for teachers that affect students’ future attitude toward this topic. The research method was descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample of research was 472 pre-service science teachers, who were sampled by using convenient sampling method and are students of Science Education Department at four different public universities. Data collection instruments were developed by researchers as valid and reliable questionnaire in order to determine the attitudes, knowledge levels and argumentation skills of pre-service teachers regarding OTD. Results observed that the pre-service science teachers' argumentation skills in a socio-scientific subject such as OTD were at a very low level, their attitudes were at a moderate level, and their knowledge level was above the average. Results of the study have shown that graduated high school type and grade level have played important roles in the positive attitudes, high argumentation skills and high knowledge level about organ donation. No significant difference was found in the attitudes and knowledge level of pre-service science teachers toward OTD in terms of gender. The gender only affected the ability of argumentation. © 2019 Eurasian Society of Educational Research. All rights reserved.

Prophylactic administration of histamine 1 and/or histamine 2 receptor blockers in the prevention of heparin- and protamine-related haemodynamic effects
    (Australian Society of Anaesthetists, 1996) Kanbak M.; Kahraman S.; Celebioglu B.; Akpolat N.; Ercan S.; Erdem K.
The efficacy of prophylactic administration of H1 and H2 receptor blockers to prevent adverse haemodynamic responses to heparin and protamine was studied. The control group (n=10) received no histamine receptor blocker; group HI (n=10) received oral terfenadine 60 mg, group H2 (n=10) received oral ranitidine 300 mg, and group H1+H2 (n=10) received both terfenadine and ranititine on the night before the operation and on call to the operating room. Heparin sulphate 300 U/kg was injected directly into the right atrium, and protamine hydrochloride was administered at the conclusion of bypass over at least three minutes through a peripheral route. Following the injection of heparin, plasma histamine-like activity (H-LA) was increased significantly in all four groups. While systolic, diastolic, mean arterial and central venous pressures were decreased significantly in the control group, no significant changes were observed in the H1 and H2 groups. Protamine infusion did not lead to an increase in H-LA. Prophylactic administration of histamine receptor blockers (H1 or H2) attenuated the heparin-induced adverse haemodynamic response but did not change the protamine-related haemodynamic effects. Factors other than histamine may play a major role in protamine induced cardiovascular changes.
