Ten subjects were selected from the female footballers of an amateur regional football club in Turkey, at the last week of football season. Prior to last seasonal football match venous blood samples were drawn. After 90 minute football match, the researchers stopped the match timely and blood samples were redrawn from subjects. From the samples, pre- and post-match hematological parameters, lactate level, blood viscosity, plasma Na+ and K+ levels were determined. The results showed that mean corpuscular volume (MCV), Na+ and K+ levels were all decreased significantly whereas numbers of white blood cell (WBC) and platelet (PLT) were both increased after the match. We didn't find statistically significant difference in whole blood viscosity after the match. Blood lactate levels were also significantly increased after the match. Our results showed that blood viscosity of female footballers tends to increase by this type of training due to decrease in body waters and increase in WBC and PLT numbers of amateur female footballers. Increase in blood lactate levels is remarkable and may have adverse effect on blood viscosity of these subjects because some protective mechanisms might not have adequately developed with regular training throughout the season.Öğe Effects of different durations of treadmill training exercise on bone mineral density in growing rats(Inst Sport, 2008) Ertem, K.; Karakoc, Y.; Duzova, H.; Kekilli, E.; Emre, M. H.; Kilinc, E.; Yagmur, C.In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of different durations of treadmill training exercise (daily for 30 min and 60 min) on bone mineral density (BMD) in young growing rats. Training consisted of treadmill running at 5 days per week during a period of 13 weeks. The rats in 30 min and 60 min exercise groups began to training on day 63 of life and had maintained for at least a week, with a minimal progression as a guide to the rats' training and adaptation to the treadmill. Running time was gradually increased from 15 min to 30 and 60 min per session for two exercise groups respectively. Control rats were kept in the cages at the same environmental conditions and daily inspected to control their health. At the end of 13 weeks, bone mineral densities of the bilateral tibia of all rats were measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) (QDR 4500/W, Hologic Inc., Bedford, MA, USA) and results were evaluated. There were significantly increases in BMD of right and left tibia of rats in 30 min exercise group at post-exercise period (p<0.01 for both sides) when compared to the control group. BMD of right and left tibia of rats were also correlated with each other (r=0.556 and p=0.003). Otherwise, there is a positive correlation between pre- and post-exercise body weights of rats (r=0.588 and p=0.002). From our results, we concluded that subjects should perform moderate running exercise for development of bone mass and its protection during the lifelong. H.; Uludag, M.; Gun, K.; Ozkaya, M.[Abstract Not Available]Öğe How safe is the use of herbal weight-loss products sold over the Internet?(Sage Publications Ltd, 2013) Ozdemir, B.; Sahin, I.; Kapucu, H.; Celbis, O.; Karakoc, Y.; Erdogan, S.; Onal, Y.Background: In recent years, the use of herbal weight-loss products sold over the Internet has rapidly increased; however, the safety of these products has not been well documented yet. More importantly, the declared ingredients in these products could be different than the marketed contents. Methods: Nine different herbal weight-loss products sold over the Internet were obtained. The ingredients of each product were analyzed in the Laboratory of Forensic Medicine and the Scientific and Technological Research Laboratory of Inonu University. Results: Although all studied weight-loss products were presented as pure herbal, three of them contain sibutramine, three contain caffeine, and three contain caffeine + temazepam. The amount of sibutramine in each capsule was found to be over 10 mg. We analyzed toxic and trace element levels of nine herbal products and found that these herbal products, even in low amounts, contain Pb, Al, Ni, and Ba. Conclusions: Our results indicate that herbal weight-loss products available without prescription and claimed to be purely herbal may contain pharmaceutical substances like sibutramine or temazepam in high doses. Moreover, they also may become contaminated with toxic metals. Since people commonly use these products unaware of its real constituents and without the suggestion or control of a physician, they might cause various health problems some of which might be harmful. Strict legal rules and control mechanisms must be established to minimize their possible harmful effects.Öğe An iatrogenic femoral nerve injury after open reduction and displacement iliac osteotomy for hip dysplasia: a case report(Springer, 2010) Ertem, K.; Karakoc, Y.; Cetin, A.; Bora, A.In this report, we present a 4-year-old female patient who came to our clinic complaining of symptoms that were then attributed to a right femoral nerve injury, 15 months after open reduction, and innominate osteotomy operations performed at another orthopedic center. The operations were performed using the Smith-Peterson incision technique and led to a neurotmetic femoral nerve injury. In our clinic, we repaired damaged femoral nerve by sural nerve graft using interfascicular technique. After 6 years, she was walking without additional device or hand to stabilize the knee.
