Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is defined as the suspension of breathing for 10 seconds or more. Genetic predisposition can be suggesated in the OSAS. The aim of this study is to assess through dermatoglyphics whether genetic factors are effective in OSAS because skin glyphs and pharyngeal are originate from ectoderm. Our study was conducted with 134 volunteers, 68 (21 females, 47 males) individuals with OSAS and 66 (21 females, 48 males) healthy individuals. The photographs of the palms and fingertips of the right and left hands of the participants were taken with high definition cameras. These images were enlarged with computer and their dermatoglyphics were assessed. Fingertip loop types, total number of fingertip lines, total a-b line numbers and atd angles were assessed in healthy individuals and patients with OSAS. We found a statistically significant difference between the right and left hand atd values of healthy individuals and individuals with OSA. atd values can be used as an early indicator of OSAS.Öğe Anatomy Courses Content of the Medical Faculty in Turkey(2022) Karataş, Turgay; Selçuk, Engin Burak; Karatas, MehmetAim: Our research in Turkey with the Higher Education Council (YÖK) depends on the content of the courses in Anatomy operating in the Faculty of Medicine, School of Medicine has identified and studied during class hours to reveal whether there is a standard in this regard.Materials and Methods: Web pages of all Medical Faculties have been accessed by writing the names of Medical Faculties to search engines on the Internet. There are two arteries branching from the second part of a. axillaris: One of them is a. thoraco-acromialis, being a short and thick branch, and the other one is a branch also known as a. thoracica lateralis or a. mammaria externa. A. thoracodorsalis is another vein and proceeds as a continuation of a. subscapularis and accompanies n. thoracodorsalis. Knowing variations other than normal anatomical structure is significantly important for anatomists, clinicians and especially for surgeons. We want to present an axillary artery and subscapular artery variation we have found, by using dissection method, on bilateral upper extremity of a 40-year old, white, male cadaver used for educational purposes by the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Inonu University.Öğe Diabetes mellitus olan ve olmayan kolelitiazisli hastalarda preoperatif ve postoperatif dönemde ekstrahepatik safra yollarının morfometrik olarak değerlendirilmesi(İnönü Üniversitesi, 2018) Karataş, TurgayDiabetes Mellitus Olan ve Olmayan Kolelitiazisli Hastalarda Preoperatif ve Postoperatif Dönemde Ekstrahepatik Safra Yollarının Morfometrik Olarak Değerlendirilmesi Amaç: Safra taşı nedeniyle yapılan kolesistektominin, diyabeti olan ve diyabeti olmayan hastalarda ekstrahepatik safra yolları morfometrisi üzerine etkisini ortaya çıkarmayı amaçladık. Material and Method: Between January 2019 and March 2020, 995 patients who underwent chest CT were retrospectively analyzed and TD was detected in 62 cases. Group 1 is only TD, Group 2 is TD + COPD, Group 3 is only COPD, Group 4 is defined as control group. We measured the localization, size, the distance to carina and vocal cord of TDs. In all groups chest diameters at T4 and T9 levels were measured as transverse and vertical plans. Results: TDs detected mostly at the T2 and T3 levels. In Group 1 and Group 2, there was a statistically significant difference the distance to TD of vocal chords. A statistically significant difference was found between Group 1 and Group 3 only in the anteroposterior diameter at the T4 and T9 levels. Conclusion: The fact that TDs, which we do not know clearly whether they are acquired or congenital, have different TD levels in COPD patients made us think that TDs may be acquired. We also observed that COPD affects TD localization and TD has the opposite effect in increasing anteroposterior chest parameters in COPD. Precence of TD is essential on COPD patients about thorax anthropometry.Öğe Evaluating the Behaviours of Citizens and Physicians During Healthcare System Changes in Turkey(2016) Karatas, Mehmet; Korkmaz, Mehmet Fatih; Selçuk, Engin Burak; Karataş, Turgay; Yalçınsoy, Murat; Kayhan Tetik, BurcuAbstract: This study may provide insights into the positive and negative perceptions of physicians and citizens in Turkey regarding the Transformation in Health Project. We aimed to evaluate the views of physicians and citizens regarding the changing healthcare system using different questionnaires. We interviewed 1190 actively working physicians and 1997 citizens using face-to-face questionnaires to determine how the changing healthcare system has affected the behaviours of physicians and citizens. Methods: Li-ESWT was used to treat 41 patients applied with PD using the Duolith SD1 Ultra device. In Peyronie’s patients, a total of 300 beats (3,000 strokes 0.25 mJ/mm2) were applied to the penile region to be Li-ESWT with clinical emphasis, that is, on the palpable Peyronie’s plaque, once a week for 6 weeks. The method’s reproducibility and efficacy were determined by comparing penile discomfort, penile curvature, penile plaque size, and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score values in Peyronie’s patients at baseline and 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after Li-ESWT treatment. Results: While there was a statistically significant decrease (p<0.001) in Vas score before and after Li-ESWT treatment at 3, 6, and 12 months, the change in angulation in IIEF-5 scoring and plaque size was not significant (p=0.950, p=0.162, p=0.162, respectively). Discussion and Conclusion: These results showed us that Li-ESWT treatment in PD did not provide angulation, shrinkage of penile plaque and improvement in sexual functions, except for reducing the penile pain complaint of the patients during erection. Findings indicate that Li-ESWT alleviates penile pain associated with PD. However, it did not appear to be useful in terms of reducing penile curvature, plaque size, or sexual function.Öğe Evaluation of morphometry in extrahepatic bile ducts in preoperative and postoperative periods in diabetic and non - diabetic patients with cholelithiasis(2020) Karataş, Turgay; Özbağ, Davut; Ögetürk, Murat; Demirtaş, Gökhan; Şenol, Deniz; Çevirgen, Furkan; Canbolat, Mustafa; Köse, Evren; Dirican, Abuzer; Kanlıöz, MuratAbstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to find out and to compare the effect of cholecystectomy performed due to gallstone on the extrahepatic bile ducts morphometry in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. In addition, no statistically significant difference was found between DC and N-DC groups in terms of post- cholecystectomy DHC dilatation.Öğe How does the retrocecal anatomic localization of the appendix vermiformis affect the prognosis of acute appendicitis today? A comparative prospective study(2022) Karataş, Turgay; Selçuk, Engin Burak; Karatas, Mehmet; Yıldırım, AtillaAppendix vermiformis is found in various anatomical localizations. Localization of the appendix vermiformis has been suggested to affect the clinical findings and out- comes of acute appendicitis. Aimed at investigating the effect of retrocecal localization of appendix vermiformis on the prognosis of acute appendicitis today. This study was started in August 2018 and finished in August 2021. Adult patients of both sexes who were operated in general surgery clinic with a pre-diagnosis of acute appendicitis were included in the study. Anatomic localization of appendix vermiformis were divided into two parts as retrocecal localizations and non-retrocecal localizations. The forms of appendicitis, postoperative complications, and length of hospitalization obtained from retrocecal and non-retrocecal localizations were compared and evaluated. A total of 776 patients were included in the study. Retrocecal localization was found in 15%, and non-retrocecal in 84.9% of the patients. The rate of acute appendicitis was 65.8% in retrocecal localization, 83.1% in non-retrocecal localization, perforated appendicitis at 31.6% in retrocecal localization and 11.2% in non-retrocecal localization. The perforated appendicitis rate was significantly higher in retrocecal localizations (p=.0001). Although postoperative complications were 5.1% in retrocecal appendicitis and 2.4% in non-retrocecal appendicitis, there was no significant difference between them in terms of postoperative complications (p=.105). The mean length of hospital stay was 2.4 days for appendicitis with retrocecal localization and 1.7 days for non-retrocecal localizations. The mean length of hospital stay was also significantly higher in retrocecal localizations (p=.0001). In conclusion, both perforated appendicitis rates and the mean length of hospital stay were higher in appendicitis with retrocecal localization. Therefore, appendicitis with retrocecal localization still negatively affects the prognosis of acute appendicitis today.Öğe The importance of the structure of pylorus in the success of the gastric botulinum toxin injections(2020) Kanlıöz, Murat; Ekici, Uğur; Tatlı, Faik; Karataş, TurgayAbstract: Introduction: In clinical practices, our success rate proved lower in patients with hypotonic pylorus who underwent gastric botulinum toxin A (GBTA) injection. To analyze this methodologically, we researched how considering the pyloric structure contributes to the treatment success in GBTA injection. Materials and Methods: This study included 196 patients who underwent GBTA injection between 2017 and 2018. We measured their body mass indexes (BMI) before treatment (BT) and six months after treatment (AT). Upon no contraindications in the endoscopy, we applied GBTA 200 U to the patients. During the endoscopy, we named the pylori able to strain & relax spontaneously or by a stimulus and close firmly as normotonic pylorus (NP) and patients unable to close firmly and respond to the stimulus as hypotonic pylorus (HP). The patients were analyzed under three groups: G1, G2 and G3, which included patients with NP, HP and NP (+) HP, respectively. In independent group comparisons, we used the Mann-Whitney U test. Further, we made the dependent group comparisons using the Wilcoxon paired sample test. In all tests, a level of 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Of the patients, 63.8% (125) were female and 36.2% (71) were male. Their mean age was 32.27±9.2 years. 148 and 48 of the patients had NP and HP, respectively. The median BMIs of groups were as follows: 35.5 (27.4–48) kg/m2 BT and 32.55 (24–44.1) kg/m2 AT in G3 with -2.95 kg/m2 variation (p=0.048*), 35.7 (27.4–48) kg/m2 BT and 32.35 (24–42.8) kg/m2 AT in G1 with -3.35 kg/m2 variation (p=0.036*), 35.1 (29– 46.2) kg/m2 BT and 34.15 (27.9–44.1) kg/m2 AT in G2 with -0.95 kg/m2 variation (p=0.098). Conclusion: We recommend administering GBTA injection therapy especially to the patients with NP.Öğe Is there any relationship between complicated appendicitis and leucocyte counts?(Turgut Özal Tıp Merkezi Dergisi, 2016) Kanlioz, Murat; Ekici, Uğur; Tatlı, Faik; Karataş, Turgay; İnan, TarıkAbstract Aim: We aim to show the increasing in leucocyte count according to severity of inflammation in complicated appendicitis. Do we use it correctly?(2019) Senol, Deniz; Karataş, Mehmet; Karataş, Turgay; Özbağ, Davut; Tecellioğlu, Mehmet; Canbolat, MustafaAbstract: Aim: Neural tube defects (NTD) are among most commonly found congenital anomalies. Sufficient amount of folic acid taken in preconception period is reported to prevent NTD development. There are studies in literature which make an association between high doses of folic acid taken during pregnancy and autism. When folic acid supplement began to be made on foods to protect from neural tube defects a concurrent increase has been mentioned in autism prevalence. Today pregnancy and folic acid supplement are currently indispensable. Physicians have made this supplement a routine. Aim of study is to assess if every woman in Malatya has a deficiency which requires routine use of folic acid through the folic acid levels of women who refer to health institutions. Material and Methods: Study conducted on the records of 1003 female patients in reproductive age group who referred to neurology and internal medicine polyclinics for any reason and whose folic acid levels were checked by the related physician. Results: Serum folic acid level averages of all women whose records were taken is 7,69±3,03ng/ml. Only 27 (2,69%) women’s folic acid levels lower than 3,08 ng/ml. 699 (69,69%) women’s serum folic acid levels higher than 6 ng/ml. Conclusions: If these 1003 women were pregnant, they would routinely be started folic acid. However, folic acid levels of a great majority (69,69%) was found to be higher than 6 ng/ml. We believe that physicians should start folic acid after taking into consideration the nutritional habits and socioeconomic characteristics of the region they live in and after they check serum folic acid level.Öğe The place of total testosterone in the etiology of pilonidal sinus disease(2020) Kanlıöz, Murat; Karataş, Turgay; Tatlı, FaikAbstract: Aim: There are lots of factors accused in the etiology of SPSD. One of those factors is hypertrichosis. Hypertrichosis is increased by high levels of testosterone. In our clinical practices, we observe the secondary effects of high testosterone levels in those with SPSD. Hence, we intended to analyze the correlation between testosterone and SPSD. Material and Methods: The first 200 patients who applied to General Surgery Clinic at Malatya State Hospital and were diagnosed with SPDS, were included in the study after being informed of our research and signing the informed consent form. The total testosterone (TT) levels of the patients were measured and recorded along with their demographic data. Also, a control group was formed of male and female patients without SPSD having the same demographic characteristics, whose TT levels were also subsequently recorded. The data from control and study groups were then compared and analyzed. Results: Of the 200 patients included in the study, 43 (21.5%) were female and 157 (78.5%) were male. Their overall mean age was 24.13±7.04 years and the median age was 22 years (min: 14- max: 50). The male-to-female ratio was 3.65. The rate of females and males who had high levels of TT was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: We recommend measuring serum TT levels of patients who apply to hospital for SPSD. SPSD might be the first visible ring of the chain of diseases characterized by high levels of TT.Öğe Proksimal humerus kırıklarının tedavisinde lateral deltoid split girişim ile deltopektoral girişimin karşılaştırılması(Ulusal Travma ve Acil Cerrahi Dergisi, 2015) Korkmaz, Mehmet Fatih; Erdem, Mehmet Nuri; Karakaplan, Mustafa; Görmeli, Gökay; Selçuk, Engin Burak; Maraş, Zeynep; Karataş, TurgayÖz: AMAÇ: Proksimal humerus kırıkları sık görülen ve fonksiyonel kısıtlanmaya neden olan kırıklardandır.
