Öğe Evaluation of sexual function in patients presenting with Behcet's disease with or without depression(Wiley, 2013) Gul, I. G.; Kartalci, S.; Cumurcu, B. E.; Karincaoglu, Y.; Yologlu, S.; Karlidag, R.Aim Sexual dysfunction has been found in many disorders that are chronic or disabling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sexual satisfaction levels, sexual function and their relationship with the mental state in a group of patients being followed-up with a diagnosis of Behcet's disease (BD). Method A total of 50 BD patients and 50 control-group subjects were administered the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), Golombok Rust Sexual Satisfaction Scale (GRISS) and Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX). Results The ASEX, GRISS total, HDRS and HARS scores were significantly higher in the patient group than the control subjects (P=0.0001, P=0.007, P=0.0001, P=0.0001 respectively). Sexual dissatisfaction was seen in 40 (80%) of the patient-group and 16 (32%) of the control-group subjects according to the GRISS (P=0.0001). Female study participants had higher mean scores than the control subjects for the ASEX, GRISS total scores and the GRISS satisfaction, avoidance, vaginismus and orgasm subscale scores (P=0.0001, P=0.002, P=0.02, P=0.001, P=0.006, P=0.03 respectively). Male study participants had different mean scores for the controls regarding the ASEX scores and the GRISS impotence, premature ejaculation, satisfaction and frequency subscale scores (P=0.01, P=0.01, P=0.0001, P=0.03, P=0.007 respectively). Discussion The negative effect of the disorder on the biological and functional status and daily living activities in BD patients also influences the patients' sexual experiences and satisfaction. The negative effects of chronic diseases such as BD should therefore be defined and the disorder evaluated from a wide perspective during the treatment process.Öğe Is Demodex folliculorum an aetiological factor in seborrhoeic dermatitis?(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc, 2009) Karincaoglu, Y.; Tepe, B.; Kalayci, B.; Atambay, M.; Seyhan, M.Background. Seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is a common inflammatory skin disease for which no single cause has been found, although many factors have been implicated. The mite Demodex folliculorum (DF) is most commonly seen in the pilosebaceous unit in humans. SD is located in areas that are rich in sebaceous glands, which are also preferred by DF. Aims. To compare the number of DF parasites in patients with clinical SD and in healthy controls, and to investigate any possible relationship between the number of DF mites and the presence of SD. Methods. The study comprised 38 patients with SD and 38 healthy controls. Standard random and lesion-specific sampling was performed in the group of patients with SD, whereas standard random sampling only was performed for controls. Results. Demodex folliculorum sampling was positive in 19 patients (50%) and 5 controls (13.1%). Mean DF density was 8.16 +/- 10.1/cm(2) (range 0-40) and 1.03 +/- 2.17/cm(2) (1-7) in patient and control groups, respectively. The differences between groups for DF positivity and mean DF density were significant (P = 0.001 for each). DF was found in 13 lesional areas in the patient group, but in only 5 areas in the control group (P = 0.031). Conclusions. The number of DF mites was significantly higher in both lesional and nonlesional areas of patients with SD. This suggests that, when other aetiological causes are excluded, DF may have either direct or indirect role in the aetiology of SD.Öğe Isokinetic evaluation of knee extensor/flexor muscle strength in Behcet's patients(Publisaude-Edicoes Medicas Lda, 2015) Durmus, B.; Emre, S.; Sahin, N.; Karincaoglu, Y.; Dogan, E.; Baysal, O.; Ersoy, Y.Background: Behcet's disease (BD) is an idiopathic, multisystemic, progressive disease. The purpose of this study is to compare the knee flexor and extensor isokinetic muscle strengths of Behcet's patients with that of healthy subjects. Methods: Twenty-five (13 male and 12 female) patients with BD and 25 (15 male and 10 female) healthy individuals were included in the study Velocities of 90 degrees/sec, 120 degrees/sec, and 150 degrees/sec were used for the isokinetic muscle strength testing. Patients with active inflammatory knee arthritis were excluded. Peak torque (Nm) and peak torque adjusted to body weight (%) were taken into consideration for comparison between study groups. Results: Compared to healthy controls, there was a statistically significant decrease in both the bilateral knee extensor and flexor muscle isokinetic peak torques (Nm) as well as the peak torques adjusted to body weight (%) at velocities of 90 degrees/sec, 120 degrees/sec and 150 degrees/sec in patients with BD (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the agonist-antagonist ratio of the isokinetic peak torques of knee muscles between the two groups. Conclusion: In light of these findings, we have concluded that both knee flexor and extensor isokinetic muscle strengths are lower in BD. We therefore recommend careful monitoring of patients with BD in temis of muscle strength.Öğe Pseudozoster clinical presentation of Demodex infestation after prolonged topical steroid use(Wiley-Blackwell, 2008) Karincaoglu, Y.; Tepe, B.; Kalayci, B.; Seyhan, M.A 60-year-old man presented with a plaque lesion on the upper right half of the face, which had developed after ophthalmic varicella zoster infection about 2 years previously. The lesion, which was burning and itchy, included a few tiny erythematous pustules, and was slightly squamous and infiltrated. The lesion covered the upper two-thirds of the right trigeminal nerve dermatome, involving half of the face with the forehead, the periorbital area, upper part of the cheek and the nose. The lesion became more marked after continuous topical anaesthetic and corticosteroid use. A standardized skin-surface biopsy was taken, and revealed a large number of Demodex folliculorum (38/cm(2)) in the lesion area. The lesions completely abated after topical 5% permethrin treatment, and no recurrence was observed during follow-up. Demodicosis may have atypical clinical presentations, other than the well-known classic forms. To our knowledge, this is the first unilateral trigeminal, pseudozoster presentation in the literature.
