Öğe The effect of regular exercise and massage on oxidant and antioxidant parameters(Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India, 2013) Karabulut A.B.; Emin Kafkas M.; Kafkas A.S.; Önal Y.; Kiran T.R.This experimental study aimed to determine the effects of the combined application of regular exercises and massage on the values of Malondialdehyde (MDA), Nitric Oxide (NOx), Glutathione (GSH), Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). Twenty five sedentary women (32-50 years) who did not have the habit of getting regularly massages or exercising and participated voluntarily in the study. The subjects were randomly separated into three groups: control group (CG, n=9), exercise group (EG, n=8), and massage and exercise group (MEG, n=8). The basic result of this study was that a statistically significant decrease was observed in the post-test MDA values of both EG and MEG subjects. Moreover, when the GSH and SOD values are compared to CG, a statistically significant increase was determined in the values of both EG and MEG. As a result, the findings show that regular physical activities and massage manipulations significantly decrease MDA, increase SOD and GSH activities, and result in no change in NOx and ADA activities supports the assumption that regular physical activity has positive health effects.Öğe Malondialdehyde, glutathione and nitric oxide levels in patients with Enterobius vermicularis infection(2010) Kiran T.R.; Karaman Ü.; Çolak C.; Bay Karabulut A.; Daldal N.The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) which are indicators of oxidative stress and also the level of glutathione (GSH) which is an antioxidant molecule, in patients with Enterobius vermicularis infection. A total of 41 patients (mean age: 36.4 years; 31 were male) and 40 healthy controls (mean age: 40.2 years; 28 were male) were included to the study. None of the patients and controls have had history of hormone/steroid drug use, smoking and alcoholism. The mean level of GSH in patient and control groups were found 1.17 ± 0.02 ?mol/l and 2.49 ± 0.10 ?mol/l; MDA 26.97 ± 2.06 ?mol/l and 19.47 ± 2.25 ?mol/l NO 20.74 ± 0.60 ?mol/dl and 17.83 ± 0.50 ?mol/dl, respectively. The mean GSH level in patient group was statistically significantly lower (p< 0.05) than controls, while the mean MDA and NO levels were statistically significantly higher (p< 0.05). These results indicated that the consumption of GSH was increased due to the severity of oxidative stress in patients infected with E.vermicularis. Detailed experimental and clinical studies are required to enlighten the relation of GSH in the pathogenesis of E.vermicularis infection. Since oxidative stress is increased during enterobiosis, the use of antioxidant agents (e.g. vitamins C and E) for the supportive treatment deserves evaluation.Öğe Serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in surgically treated hydatid cyst patients(2011) Isik S.; Karaman U.; Kiran T.R.; Özer A.Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is an essential enzyme in the monocytes - macrophage system and in the proliferation and differentiation of lymphocytes. ADA activity is routinely used in the differentiation of other etiologies of tuberculosis pleurisy in clinical practice and elevated ADA levels are stated to indicate the severity of the disease. In this study the purpose was to compare the serum ADA levels between patients operated due to hydatid cyst and healthy individuals (control group). The serum ADA levels of surgically treated patient with hydatid cyst were analyzed and a significant decrease was observed in comparison with the control group (10.98±6.53 vs 21.11±14.07, p<0.05). Decreasing of ADA levels on surgical treated hydatid cyst patients can be interpreted as the inhibition of tissue damage or cessation of lymphocyte proliferation as a result of the elimination of the parasite by means of surgical treatment and breaking the relation between the parasite and immune cells of the host. Determination of ADA activity in hydatid cyst patients might be a diagnostic tool if further clinical trials are carried out. © 2011 Academic Journals.
