Effectiveness of Different Methods in Removing Dentin Caries of Primary Teeth: Micro-CT and SEM Evaluation
(Journal Pedodontics Inc, 2022) Duruk, Gulsum; Kizilci, Esra; Malkoc, Meral Arslan
Objectives: With the recent improvements in technology, the expectation of minimal invasion and maximal comfort in caries removal techniques is increasing. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of six caries removal methods in primary teeth. Study design: Sixty primary molars (10 teeth in each groups) were used. floor was examined before and after caries removal. After caries removal, the patency of the dentinal tubules was examined in two teeth from each group on SEM images. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon tests. Results: For six different caries removal methods, tooth mineral (inorganic, total) densities at cavity floors were compared among the groups after the procedures, and no statistically significant difference was found (p>0.05). On the SEM images, it was seen that the dentinal tubules were exposed and no smear layer was formed in the Carisolv group. Significant rough surfaces were exposed in the laser group. Conclusion: It was observed that alternative caries removal methods are at least as effective as the traditional method in primary teeth for clinical applications.

Effects of Fixed and Removable Space Maintainers on Plaque Accumulation, Periodontal Health, Candidal and Enterococcus Faecalis Carriage
(Karger, 2015) Arikan, Volkan; Kizilci, Esra; Ozalp, Nurhan; Ozcelik, Berrin
Objective: To evaluate the effects of space maintainers on plaque accumulation, periodontal health and oral microflora. Subjects and Methods: The study participants comprised 38 patients aged 4-10 years requiring either fixed or removable space maintainers. Plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing index, candidal colonization and Enterococcus faecalis were recorded just before the application of space maintainers (T0) and during treatment at the 1st (T1), 3rd (T2) and 6th (T3) month. Results: The gingival and bleeding on probing index scores increased significantly (gingival index from 0.20 +/- 0254 to 0.54 +/- 0417 and bleeding on probing index from 7.18 +/- 9.946 to 18.07 +/- 14.074) in the regions with fixed space maintainers at T3 (p < 0.01). The mean Candida counts also increased (for removable appliances from 1.90 +/- 3.638 to 1.98 +/- 3.318, p < 0.05, and for fixed appliances from 4.25 +/- 4.587 to 4.52 +/- 4.431, p < 0.001). The salivary E. faecalis counts at T3 also increased significantly with the use of fixed and removable appliances (for removable appliances from 5.93 +/- 2.65 to 85.53 +/- 34.1 and for fixed appliances from 4.95 +/- 2.94 to 123.59 +/- 29.51, p < 0.001). A positive correlation was found between the plaque (r = 0.67), gingival (r = 0.76) and bleeding on probing index scores (r = 0.76) and the candidal colonization for the fixed space maintainers (p < 0.01, p < 0.001). Conclusions: In this study, both fixed and removable space maintainers led to an increase in the number of microorganisms in the oral cavity as well as to increases in the periodontal index scores. Patients should be informed that space maintainers may serve as a source of infection and that special attention must be given to their oral hygiene. (C) 2015 S. Karger AG, Basel

Evaluation of Epidemiology and Etiology of Dental Injuries Observed in Children
(Medicine Science, 2015) Kizilci, Esra; Demir, Pinar
Öz: Travmatik dental yaralanmalar (TDY); sıklığı, genç yaşlarda meydana gelmesi, hastanın ileriki hayatında tedavi ve takibinin devam etmesi ve bu nedenle maliyetin yüksek olması sebepleriyle önemli bir halk sağlığı problemidir. Son 30 yılda bilimsel literatürdeki TDY sıklığı anlamlı derecede artış göstermiştir. TDY'nin etiyolojik ve epidemiyolojik etkenlerinin bilinmesi hekime tanı ve tedavi planlamasında önemli ölçüde destek olur. Bu çalışmada amaç, 15 yaşın altındaki çocukların TDY'lerinin epidemiyolojik özelliklerini tanımlamaktır. Bu çalışmada elde edilen sonuçlar pediatrik popülasyonun bu tip yaralanmalarında tedavinin ve önleyici tedbirlerin geliştirilmesi için yararlı olacaktır Başlık (İngilizce): Çocuklarda Görülen Diş Yaralanmalarının Etiyoloji ve Epidemiyolojilerinin Değerlendirilmesi Öz (İngilizce): Traumatic dental injuries(TDI) is an important public health problem because of its frequency, occurrence at a young age and the high cost treatment follow-up procedures reason for continuing forward in the life of the patient's. In scientific literature, TDI frequency has increased in the last 30 years. Knowing the etiological and epidemiological factors of traumatic dental injuries would significantly support physicians in diagnosis and treatment planning. This observational retrospective study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of traumatic dental injuries of children under the age of 15. The results obtained in this study will be useful for the development of the prevention and treatment of this type of injury of the pediatric population

An Investigation of the Knowledge and Preferences of Parents About Dental Preventive Practices
(Pera Yayincilik Hizmetleri, 2024) Kizilay, Fatma Nur; Kizilci, Esra; Mahyaddinova, Turkan; Gumusboga, Zekiye Seyma
Objective: Dental caries poses a significant health concern affecting, 60%-90% of children globally. While fluoride is widely utilized to prevent and eliminate dental caries, recent negative media coverage and concerns about irresponsible fluoride use have prompted a shift in parental perspectives. This study explores parental knowledge, preferences, and attitudes regarding preventive measures, with a focus on fluoride and potential natural or herbal alternatives. Methods: Our research was designed as a survey study. A survey form consisting of 11 questions was delivered to parents of children aged 6-14 years and presented to the Erciyes University Department of Pediatric Dentistry for examination or treatment were included in the study. A total of 300 parents participated in the study. Data was recorded as numbers and percentages. Results: Of the parents, 69% (207) reported that if they were offered natural herbal compounds instead of fluorinated varnish, they would prefer natural alternatives. A statistically significant relationship was found between the responses received from the parents about the effects of fluoride and the educational level of the parents (p<0.05). Only 4 (1.3%) university graduate parents stated that fluoride had harmful effects. We found that 80.95% of the fathers and 68.39% of the mothers stated that they would prefer natural or herbal alternatives for their children instead of fluorinated varnish, and this was a statistically significant result (p<0.05). Conclusion: Parents do not have sufficient knowledge and attitudes about preventive practices in oral dental health, and some parents still avoid the use of fluoride products. Therefore, there is a need to increase fluoride intake and its effects on children's health by educating parents or informing dentists.

Occurrence and Timing of Complications of Crown-Fractures in Permanent Incisors: A Randomized Clinical Trial
(Assoc Apoio Pesquisa & Saude Bucal-Apesb, 2021) Demir, Pinar; Kizilci, Esra; Botsali, Murat Selim
Objective: To investigate the complications of crown fractures that might occur in different follow-up periods. Material and Methods: Individuals within the 6-13 age range with crown fracture and consulted to University Hospital were included in the study. Patients were randomly divided into three groups by block randomization method and evaluated clinical and radiographically for complications at the 6, 8 weeks, and 6, 12, 24 months. The crown of the tooth was divided into 9 equal squares and 6 classes of fracture types were created. Complications and their frequencies were evaluated based on the post-traumatic substance losses in these illustrated fracture types. Results: The incidence of complications was 28.9% at 6 months, 51.3% at 1year, and 63.9% at 2years. Class4 fractures had the highest probability of complications (32.4%) and the development of pulp necrosis (40.3%). It was detected that the complications such as pulp necrosis (21.6%) can be frequently observed in the 2nd year or later periods of crown fractures. Conclusion: In addition to current regular checks, periodic follow-up of crown fracture should be extended to reflect current findings. Dentists, patients, and their parents must be made conscious of the importance of the treatment and follow-ups of crown fracture.
