Brain diffusion-weighted imaging in diabetic patients with retinopathy
    (Verduci Publisher, 2012) Dogan, M.; Ozsoy, E.; Doganay, S.; Burulday, V.; Firat, P. G.; Ozer, A.; Alkan, A.
Objective: Our aim was to detect whether there is any change in apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) levels in different sites of the brain, particularly in areas associated with the vision, in diabetic patients with retinopathy by measuring diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Materials and Methods: Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DWI of the brain were obtained from 45 diabetic patients (15 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (group 1), 15 patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (group 2), 15 diabetic patients without retinopathy (group 3) and from 15 age-matched healthy volunteers (group 4). ADC values of visual cortex, cingulate gyrus, orbitofrontal, dorsomedial and dorsolateral frontal, corona radiate, and thalamus were obtained. Results: The ADC values of visual cortex, cingulate gyrus and orbitofrontal cortex significantly increased in groups 1 and 2 compared to groups 3 and 4 (p < 0.001). The ADC values of visual cortex significantly increased in group 1 compared to group 2 (p < 0.001). The duration of disease and value of HbA1c positively correlated with ADC values of the visual and orbitofrontal cortexes, and cingulate gyrus. Conclusions: We found an increase in ADC values supporting the neuronal loss in some regions, especially in visual center by DWI in the diabetic patients with retinopathy. This result supports the association between diabetic retinopathy and brain injury.

Comparison of results after flouroquinolons and combination therapies in type IIIA chronic prostatitis
    (Ene Ediciones Sl, 2013) Altintas, R.; Oguz, F.; Beytur, A.; Ediz, C.; Gunes, A.; Ozer, A.
Purpose: We investigated retrospectively the clinical outcomes of the patients with type III inflammatory chronic prostatitis, who were treated with fluoroquinolones with and without an alpha-blocker between 2009-2011. Material and methods: Diagnosis was established with medical history (symptoms presented Longer than 3 months within previous 6 months), physical examination, Meares-Stamey test and the questionnaire of the NIH-CPSI. The responses to the treatment were assessed with uroflowmetry test and the questionnaire of NIH-CPSI at initial and after 4 weeks of the treatment. The patients with incomplete data and treatment and who treated with alpha-blockers and/or antibiotics in the period 4 weeks prior to the therapy started in our clinic and had any surgery of lower urinary tract previously were excluded. The patients were classified under 6 groups; group1 = ciprofloxacin, group2 = ofloxacin, group3 = levofloxacin, group4 = ciprofloxacin+tamsulosin, group5 = ofloxacin+tamsulosin, group 6 = levofloxacin+tamsulosin. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks and Kruskal Wallis test were used for comparison of results. Mann Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction made was used as posthoc (P < .05). Results: The median scores of NIH-CPSI decreased significantly in all groups (P < .05). Levofloxacin reduced the median total scores of NIH-CPSI more than ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin monotherapies. The combination therapies were better than antibiotic therapies alone and best result was obtained in levofloxacin + tamsulosin combination. Conclusion: Tamsulosin + fluoroquinolone (especially tamsulosin + levofloxacin) combinations yielded better results in both NIH-CPSI scores and peak flow rates. (C) 2012 AEU. DETERMINING ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTS OF MEDICINE FACULTY STUDENTS AND RELEVANT FACTORS
    (Scibulcom Ltd, 2018) Firinci, B.; Gokce, A.; Pehlivan, E.; Turmus, G. N.; Ozer, A.
Ecological footprint (EF) gives us clues about sustainable life and appears before us as an important indicator showing the burden of humans on this planet. The purpose of the present study was to examine the behaviours and the variables that affect these behaviours of doctor candidates, which represent an important profession in the world and in our country in this respect. The study was designed in cross-sectional fashion and was conducted in December 2017 with medicine faculty students. The dependent variables of the study were EF scores and the scores of the EF sub-components like food, house, travel, and other, and the carbon footprint (CF) score; and the independent variables were age, gender. EF score median (min-max) value of the study group was computed as 2.90 (1.78-7.09) kha, and the CF score median (min-max) value was computed as 11.69 (5.99-40.19) t. The travel component median (min-max) value was 0.93 (0.06-4.82) kha. The highest contribution to the EF was made by the transportation sub-component. In the light of the data of the present study, it was concluded that the medicine faculty students had information on the EF concept. This information must be increased with training that will be provided in the future.

Human milk banking and milk kinship: perspectives of religious officers in a Muslim country
    (Springernature, 2015) Ozdemir, R.; Ak, M.; Karatas, M.; Ozer, A.; Dogan, D. G.; Karadag, A.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to determine the knowledge, attitudes and views of the Muslim religious officers regarding infant feeding, breast milk, wet nursing, milk kinship and human milk banks (HMBs). STUDY DESIGN: A total of 401 religious officers were included in the study. Participants included 355 community service religious officers and 46 faculty religious officers. RESULTS: Two hundred fifty-four (63.3%) participants were in favor of administering donor human milk when breast milk is not available from the mothers. To the question 'What kind of human milk bank would you approve as far as the religious sensitivity is concerned?' a majority of the religious officers (71.3%) responded that they would only approve if the milk pool contained a restricted HMB where a limited number of recipients were allowed to use the mixtures in these milk pools. Only 7 (1.7%) participants advocated initiating Western-style HMBs in Turkey. CONCLUSION: Turkish religious officers have revealed that they would only approve the establishment of an alternative HMB by a maximum three donors where up to three recipients whose identities are known by one another are allowed to use donor milk from each milk pool.
