Environmental considerations in the selection of transport vehicles: a fuzzy FUCOM method
(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2025) Yuruyen, Ali Aygun; Ulutas, Alptekin; Demirhan, Azize; Ozsalman, Emre
PurposeBusinesses are starting to prioritize environmental concerns more when conducting their operations due to increasing awareness of environmental degradation and legal obligations. Thus, companies must take into account a variety of factors when buying the equipment that they need to carry out their operations. More importantly, these factors need to be properly considered because buying a vehicle is a costly decision.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted in a logistics company operating in Ankara. The data collected were obtained from five experts working as senior managers in this logistics company using an e-mail survey method, one of the modern survey types. In the study, a mixed decision-making approach based on subjective criteria expressed linguistically in an environment of uncertainty was adopted, and fuzzy full consistency method (F-FUCOM) was used to prioritize criteria by integrating environmental factors into the criteria that logistics companies take into account when selecting transportation vehicles. In total, 4 main and 17 sub-criteria were evaluated according to the decision-makers' perspectives.FindingsThe study's result shows that the main criterion with the highest importance was environmental, while the main criterion with the lowest importance was cost. Furthermore, vehicle life was found to be the most important sub-criterion, which is one of the environmental main criteria, while the vehicle's net weight was found to be the least important sub-criterion, which is one of the equipment main criteria.Originality/valueThe role of environmental criteria and multi-criteria decision-making approaches in transportation vehicle selection remains underexplored in the literature. Moreover, the F-FUCOM approach has not been applied to such complex problems. This study addresses these gaps by incorporating environmental factors into a comprehensive methodological framework, advancing both theory and practice in the field.

Evaluating export vulnerability through import demand elasticity in carbon border adjustment contexts: a focus on Türkiye
(Springer, 2025) Bayat, Tayfur; Ozsalman, Emre; Derindag, Omer Faruk
Import demand elasticity (IDE) is a critical metric often employed to guide government decisions regarding tariffs and non-tariff barriers, ensuring that foreign trade remains uninterrupted while optimizing tax revenues. This study, however, leverages IDE to assess the impact of the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) on Türkiye’s decarbonization process. Specifically, the research analyzed the total export quantities and unit prices of four product groups—cement, fertilizers, and inorganic chemicals, steel and iron, and aluminum—exported from Türkiye to the European Union-27 countries under the CBAM framework between 2002 and 2021. Using CCE and AMG methodologies, IDE parameters were estimated, followed by calculations of unit price increases and potential export losses across three distinct scenarios. The findings indicate IDE values of 1.95 for cement, 1.20 for fertilizers and inorganic chemicals, 1.85 for steel and iron, and 1.47 for aluminum. These high elasticity values suggest that Türkiye may face substantial export losses for these products. Later we calculated unit price increase and potential export loss according to three different scenarios. Across all three potential scenarios, while Türkiye’s iron and steel exports to the EU-27 face a great risk of declining by approximately 25%, the aluminum sector was found to be the least affected across all three scenarios. Consequently, it is imperative for Türkiye to expedite its decarbonization efforts to safeguard its export market share within the EU. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Pollution Haven, Pollution Halo, or Pollution Hell? The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on CO2 Emission and Temperature Rise in Fragile Five Countries
(2025) Bayat, Tayfur; Derindag, Omer Faruk; Ozsalman, Emre
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how foreign direct investment (FDI) affects the environmental quality of the Fragile Five countries, with a particular emphasis on how it may transfer ecologically damaging sectors to host countries. The link between FDI inflow, CO2 emissions, and temperature rise in the selected countries between 1970 and 2021 is specifically examined. Design/methodology: The Panel Fourier Granger Causality Test is used in the study to examine the causative relationships among temperature rise, CO2 emissions, and FDI. In order to effectively approximate the structural breaks in the series, Bahmani-Oskooee et al. (2014) Panel Unit Root Test with Sharp and Smooth Breaks was used. Additionally, the Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH) is tested for the selected countries. Findings: In the Fragile Five countries, the findings show a causal relationship between CO2 emissions and temperature rise, as well as between FDI inflow and CO2 emissions. PHH for these countries is supported by these findings, which also imply that FDI inflows worsen environmental deterioration and contribute to warming. Originality/value: This study contributes to the body of literature by offering empirical proof of the long-term environmental effects of FDI inflows into the Fragile Five countries. Additionally, the PHH is tested for selected countries and one-way causality from FDI to CO2 emission reveals that PHH is valid for selected countries.

THE MEDIATING ROLE OF HEDONIC CONSUMPTION AND MATERIALISM IN THE EFFECT OF THE CONSCIENTIOUSNESS PERSONALITY TRAIT ON ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION
(Kafkas University Iibf, 2024) Ozsalman, Emre; Sever, Sami; Cati, Kahraman
The transition from a production society to a consumption society has increased the destruction of the world's ecosystem. However, a growing number of customers are making efforts to lessen the impact of their purchases on the environment. To identify the determinants of influence on purchasing behavior, the mediating role of materialism and hedonic consumption in the relationship between conscientiousness and environmentally conscious consumption was investigated in this study. Quantitative research was used to collect data from 562 people through a survey technique. While environmentally conscious consumption and hedonism were investigated in one dimension, materialism was investigated in the dimensions of luxury tendency and feeling of deprivation, and the personality trait of conscientiousness was investigated in the dimensions of being planned and careful. Results of the study reveal that the luxury consumption tendency has a mediating impact on the relationship between sub- dimensions of conscientiousness personality traits (being careful, being planned) and environmentally conscious consumption behavior.
