Öğe Beyond the physical realm: exploring the relationship between spiritual well-being and spiritual care competence(Bmj Publishing Group, 2025) Olmaz, Dilek; Ozden, Gurkan; Parlar Kilic, SerapObjectives This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses' spiritual well-being and their competence in providing spiritual care, and to identify influencing factors among Turkish nurses. Methods A descriptive and correlative design was employed, involving 520 nurses from two hospitals in eastern Turkey. Data were collected online using Google Forms, which included a demographic questionnaire, the three-factor Spiritual Well-being Scale and the Spiritual Care Competence Scale. The study was conducted between August 2019 and June 2020.Results A significant positive correlation was found between nurses' spiritual well-being and their spiritual nursing competence (r=0.320, p=0.019). Factors, such as work duration, marital status, patient load, experience, education and information, influenced these attributes. Ageing has also been found to reduce well-being and competence. Conclusions Nurses' spiritual well-being and competence in providing spiritual care were moderately positively and significantly correlated. Education, experience and engagement in religious activities enhanced these attributes. Future research should explore additional influencing factors and incorporate spirituality into nursing education to improve the quality of holistic care.Öğe The effect of progressive muscle relaxation on sleep quality and fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A randomized controlled trial(Wiley, 2023) Kilic, Nermin; Parlar Kilic, SerapAims The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of progressive muscle relaxation on sleep quality and fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods This randomized controlled study was conducted with 72 patients with rheumatoid arthritis who applied to the rheumatology outpatient clinic of a university hospital between January and May 2018. The data were collected using the Patient Information Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Fatigue Severity Scale. After the patients in the intervention group completed the forms, patients were given training with regard to the application of progressive muscle relaxation which they subsequently performed, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Fatigue Severity Scale forms were repeated after 6 weeks. Results After performing progressive muscle relaxation for 6 weeks, the total score of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the fatigue score decreased among patients in the intervention group; no change was observed among the patients in the control group. A statistical difference was found between the two groups in terms of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index's and Fatigue Severity Scale's mean scores. Conclusion Progressive muscle relaxation can be recommended to enhanced sleep quality and reduce fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.Öğe The Effect of Social Isolation during COVID-19 Pandemic on Nutrition and Exercise Behaviors of Nursing Students(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2021) Ozden, Gurkan; Parlar Kilic, SerapThis study aims to examine the effect of social isolation during COVID-19 pandemic on nutrition and exercise behaviors of nursing students. This descriptive study was conducted with nursing students of a university in eastern Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 1,011 nursing students. The data were collected via e-mail using the Questionnaire of Descriptive Characteristics and the Nutrition Exercise Behavior Scale. Nutrition and exercise behaviors were affected by lockdown. During lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly half of students (46.9%) gained weight, and the majority (56.7%) did not exercise regularly. A statistically significant difference was found between the students' psychological/addictive eating behavior and unhealthy nutrition-exercise behavior subscales mean scores according to change in body weight, most intense emotion, status of currently doing regular exercise (p < .001), gender, frequency of eating and status of doing regular exercise before COVID-19 pandemic (p < .05). It is recommended to prepare informative guidelines and educate individuals about dietary habits, meal schedules, regular exercise, and healthy nutrition.Öğe Effects of Pre-Aspiration Chest Physiotherapy Techniques on Vital Signs, Blood Gas Values and Secretions in Mechanically Ventilated Patients(Wiley, 2026) Olmaz, Dilek; Parlar Kilic, SerapBackground: Accumulation of secretions in the airways of patients on mechanical ventilation (MV) can lead to serious complications. Chest physiotherapy (CP) techniques can be used prior to endotracheal aspiration to facilitate the removal of secretions accumulated in the respiratory tract. Aim: This study was carried out to determine the effect of CP techniques applied before aspiration on the vital signs, blood gas values and amount of secretion in patients on MV support. Study design: This randomised controlled trial was conducted in a State Hospital critical care unit with patients on MV support. The study was designed to include three groups: a percussion vibration (PV) group (n = 26) an expiratory rib compression (ERCC) group (n = 26) and a control group (n = 26). All three groups underwent two aspirations, three hours apart. Three hours after the first aspiration, CP techniques were applied to the two experimental groups, but not to the control group. A second aspiration was then performed. Vital signs and blood gases were measured before and after both aspiration procedures, and the amount of secretion collected during the two aspiration procedures was weighed. Results: The study was completed with 78 patients. During the second aspiration, ERCC patients showed significant increases in diastolic blood pressure (DBP: 69.38 +/- 10.58 -> 73.23 +/- 11.84 mmHg; p = 0.004; 95% CI: -3.250, 3.327) and heart rate (81.35 +/- 10.43 -> 85.73 +/- 11.39 bpm; p = 0.004; 95% CI: -3.250, 3.327). Respiratory rate and body temperature also increased significantly (p = 0.006 and p = 0.034). SpO2 increased in both PV (97.35 +/- 1.67 -> 97.81 +/- 1.55%; p = 0.014) and ERCC (96.01 +/- 2.66 -> 96.67 +/- 2.58%; p = 0.039) groups. No significant changes were observed in secretion weight or volume across groups, although PV and ERCC showed an increasing trend and the control group a decreasing trend (p > 0.05). Conclusions: It was determined that CP techniques had an effect on DBP, heart rate, respiratory rate and SpO2 in patients under MV support, but had no effect on other parameters. Relevance to clinical practice: The use of CP techniques by critical care nurses before aspiration may facilitate the removal of secretions in patients receiving MV support, prevent complications related to secretions and positively improve vital signs and hemodynamic indices. No: NCT06277817.Öğe From Paper to Pixels(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2026) Yayan, Emriye Hilal; Parlar Kilic, Serap; Ozden, GurkanThis study assessed the effectiveness of care plan automation through Web and mobile applications among nursing students. Many undergraduate nursing programs lack access to electronic medical records for educational purposes. Our work aimed to transform nursing care plans into easily accessible, auditable, and storable electronic forms using a developed automation system. Conducted at a nursing school, the descriptive study involved 169 nursing students practicing pediatric health and nursing courses. Data were collected using a questionnaire with 15 statements to measure the effectiveness of care plan automation. The mean age of participants was 21.69 +/- 2.29, with a mean grade point average of 3.18 +/- 0.58, and 77.5% were female. The highest-rated statement was that automation allowed students to keep and review care plans (mean, 4.34 +/- 1.13), whereas the lowest was that it increased interest in care plans (mean, 3.91 +/- 1.37). Students also found automation more satisfying (mean, 4.14 +/- 1.23). Overall, the study found that nursing students rated care plan automation positively, indicating increased motivation and benefits and decreased challenges. Implementing this system in clinical practice may enhance students' education, efficiency, and motivation in care planning.Öğe A Qualitative Study of the Experiences of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use in Patients With IBS-C(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2020) Parlar Kilic, Serap; Kilic, Nermin; Sevinc, Sibel; Demirel, CihatThe aim of this study was to explore the experiences of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among patients with constipation irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). This qualitative study consisted of a total of 30 patients who were admitted to a university hospital in Turkey. Data were collected using a descriptive questionnaire and a semistructured interview. Data analysis identified 5 main themes: (1) the constipation-associated difficulties experienced because of IBS; (2) the feeling that CAM is natural and useful; (3) the effect of environmental stimuli in preferring the use of CAM; (4) the feeling that CAM is not negative and relieves symptoms; and (5) suggesting the use of CAM. In conclusion, it was determined that all the patients with IBS-C used various CAM methods. It may be recommended that health care professionals should raise awareness among patients about CAM methods that may be useful.
