    Goldenhar syndrome-a case report

    Goldenhar syndrome is a rare developmental disorder affecting first and second branchial arches with its manifestations in multiple systems of the body. The aetiology of the syndrome is not clear however many theories have been proposed and described. It is characterised by presence of epibulbar dermoids, fistulas and preauricular appendages. In addition to facial defects the syndrome also manifests abnormalities in renal, genitourinary, cardiac and skeletal systems. Asymmetry in Goldenhar syndrome is usually obvious at the time of birth and increases with age, particularly at puberty. The ear defects can be both unilateral and bilateral but involvement of right ear is more common. To confirm diagnosis, it is imperative to have at least microtia and preauricular or auricular defects. The prognosis of the condition is good in patients who have no complicated systemic associations. A multidisciplinary team of doctors is required for successful treatment of the syndrome. We present here a case of Goldenhar syndrome in an 8-year-old girl with classic manifestations.

    Nuclear imaging in the field of dentistry: A review

    Nuclear medicine(NM) imaging has played a vital role in the early diagnosis of disease in the recent decades. Although in the present time’s conventional radiographs, Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), Computed Tomography (CT), and other alike imaging modalities are being routinely used for diagnosis and treatment purposes in the head and neck region, NM has been in use only for certain oral and maxillofacial pathologies. NM is an impressive and influential imaging means which relies on metabolic and other physiological processes of tissues revealing accurate functional and biochemical aspects of tissues and help in precise diagnosis. Radionuclide imaging involves the use radioactive isotopes that emit gamma (γ) rays. The γ rays thus emitted are detected by a gamma camera and different planar images are formed and shows the location of the radionuclides in the body. The technique provides an early marker of the disease after allowing the measurement of tissue function in vivo. Even though NM is not used on day to day basis in the field of dentistry, the dental professional must acquire the requisite information about its various uses. This review is an attempt at making a dental professional familiar with the functioning of NM imaging in the oral and maxillofacial region.

    Pemphigus vulgaris presenting as bleeding gums: A case report

    Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a chronic autoimmune disease which may be potentially life threatening. PV manifests as blisters and erosions of the skin and the mucous membrane. It can manifest initially as oral lesions. It is essential to diagnose this condition early in order to avoid the serious complications. We describe a case of 58-year-old male presented with bleeding gums and burning sensation for 6 months. Patient was previously misdiagnosed as gingivitis. Though it is rare for pemphigus vulgaris to present with gingival involvement as primary site of manifestation, our case emphasizes the importance of thorough history and clinical examination for the early diagnosis and management of such condition.
