EFFECT OF CHILDBIRTH PERCEPTIONS IN MOTHERS ON THE CHILDBIRTH FEARS OF THEIR SINGLE DAUGHTERS
(Inonu University, 2023) Akgül, Sibel; Sabanci Baransel, Esra; Uçar, Tuba
This study, it was aimed to determine the effect of the childbirth perceptions of mothers on fear of birth in their single daughters. This cross-sectional study was conducted via social media (Facebook, Instagram) between 03.01.2022 and 31.01.2022 using a web-based questionnaire. The study was completed with 794 voluntary participants (397 mothers, 397 daughters). While collecting the data, a Personal Information Form, the Childbirth Fear – Prior to Pregnancy Scale (CF-PPS), and the Perception of Traumatic Childbirth Scale (PTCS) were used. When the mean CF-PPS score of the daughters was compared according to the PTCS levels of the mothers, it was found that the difference between the mean CF-PPS scores of the girls according to the PTCS levels of the mothers was statistically significant (p <0.05). It was determined that the mean scores of mothers aged 45 years and younger were higher than those aged 46 and over, mothers with the highest PTCS mean score were those with a history of abortion, and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p<0.05). In addition, in the correlation analysis, it was determined that as the PTCS score of the mothers increased, the scores of their daughters increased in the CF-PPS, and there was a positive and weak significant relationship between PTCS and CF-PPS. It is thought that the PTCS levels of the mothers during their pregnancy have a positive relationship with the fear of childbirth in single daughters, therefore it has an effective role in transferring the fear of childbirth from mothers to their daughters. © 2023, Inonu University. Effects of prenatal breast-feeding education on postnatal breast-feeding fear in pregnant women in the COVID-19 pandemic: A randomized clinical trial
(Wiley, 2023) Sabanci Baransel, Esra; Ucar, Tuba; Guney, Esra
Aim This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of prenatal breast-feeding education provided to pregnant women who experience fear of breast-feeding in the COVID-19 pandemic period. Methods A prospective randomized controlled trial study was conducted with 128 pregnant women (64 in the experimental group and 64 in the control group) between November 2021 and February 2022. The data were collected via the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, the Breastfeeding Motivation Scale and the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale to assess fear, motivation and attitudes regarding breast-feeding. The pregnant women in the experimental group were provided with and education programme on 'safe breastfeeding in the COVID-19 pandemic'. The breast-feeding education included in standard care was given to the control group after pre-test data collection was completed. Results The significant differences in the mean Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Breastfeeding Motivation Scale and Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale scores of the groups were in favour of the experimental group (P < 0.05). It was determined that in the first postnatal month, in the experimental group, the numbers of women who believed that their breast-feeding was not affected by COVID-19 and the numbers of infants solely breastmilk-fed were higher compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Prenatal breast-feeding education about safe breast-feeding in the COVID-19 pandemic period can reduce fears of breast-feeding and increase motivation and approving attitudes regarding breast-feeding.

The effects of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program on stress, subjective anxiety, self-compassion, and prenatal attachment in pregnant women with perinatal loss: A randomized controlled trial
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2026) Oztas, Hatice Gul; Sabanci Baransel, Esra; Aktas, Zeynep
This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on stress, subjective anxiety, self-compassion, and prenatal attachment in pregnant women with perinatal loss. A total of 112 women were randomly assigned to MBSR (n = 56) or control (n = 56) groups. The MBSR program was delivered face-to-face in eight sessions over 4 weeks. Pretest comparisons showed no significant differences between groups (p >.05). Posttest results indicated that the MBSR group had significantly lower Tilburg Pregnancy Distress Scale (partner involvement and negative affect) and Subjective Units of Disturbance Scale scores, with large effect sizes (eta(2) = .677, .679, .143, .621). The MBSR group also showed significantly higher Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form scores (eta(2) = .542) and higher Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale scores, including both time spent on attachment and attachment quality (eta(2) = .620, .760, .557). Findings suggest MBSR effectively reduces stress and anxiety while enhancing self-compassion and prenatal attachment in women with perinatal loss.

The Relationship Between Pregnancy Intention and Childhood Adversity, Pregnancy Happiness and Breastfeeding Behavior
(Inonu University, 2025) Kurt, Nuray; Demirelli, Ayşegül; Sabanci Baransel, Esra; Barut, Sümeyye
This study was conducted to determine the relationship between pregnancy intention and childhood adversity, pregnancy happiness and breastfeeding behaviour. The descriptive study was conducted in two phases in a hospital in eastern Turkey between November 2022 and October 2023. In the first phase, 316 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria were reached. Mothers who could not be reached in the 6th postnatal month and those with health problems that might affect breastfeeding were excluded from the study and the study was completed with 216 participants. The data of the study were collected using the Introductory Information Form, Pregnancy Intention Determination Form, Pregnancy Happiness Determination Form, the Adverse Childhood Experience Turkish Form (ACE-TR) and Postpartum Breastfeeding Behaviour Determination Form. It was determined that there was a positive correlation between pregnancy intention and pregnancy happiness (r=.597; p<0.000), and a negative and significant correlation between the categorical scores of the Childhood Negative Experiences Scale (r=-.372; p<0.000), family type (r=-.071; p<0.000), and parity (r=-.373; p<0.000). According to the results of the study, it was determined that the participants who did not want/unplanned pregnancy had less pregnancy happiness and were more exposed to negative childhood experiences, while there was no relationship between pregnancy intention and the time of first breastfeeding. As a result, it was found that participants who did not want/unplanned their pregnancy had less pregnancy happiness and were more exposed to negative childhood experiences, and it may be recommended that these parameters should be considered as part of standard prenatal care. © 2025, Inonu University.
