Blood viscosity of individuals with alcohol abuse
    (2019) Saribal, Devrim
Aim: Alcohol abuse is accepted as a serious public health problem worldwide, and is a well-known cause of systemic alterations in the organism. The aim of our study is to investigate whether heavy alcohol consumption results in increased blood viscosity in men. We compared the levels of blood viscosity with the age-matched healthy male volunteers. Material and Methods: In order to study the blood rheology of alcohol abusers, we measured blood viscosity in 20 male patients prior to the detoxification treatment. Blood viscosity measurement was performed using Harkness Capillary viscometer. Results: Comparison of blood viscosity yielded a statistically significant elevation (p<0.001) for alcoholic individuals. Conclusion: We conclude that, among other factors causing cardiovascular diseases, such as increased blood fibrinogen and triglyceride levels, increase in blood viscosity due to chronic heavy alcohol consumption is an exacerbating factor for coronary diseases in alcoholic individuals.

The effect of menopause status on lipid profile and oxidative stress in women
(2019) Abbak, Yavuz; Saribal, Devrim; Abbak, Hilal Cam; Bahtiyar, Nurten; Toplan, Selmin
Aim: The aim of the study was to compare the lipid profile and oxidant/antioxidant status between pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women and to evaluate the correlations between these variables. Material and Methods: This study included 50 healthy women, of which 21 are in pre-menopausal and 29 are post-menopausal status. This study included 50 women classified as pre-menopausal, and post-menopausal. We analyzed lipid profile in serum samples and oxidative stress in RBC samples. Oxidant status was assessed by measurement of malondialdehyde, whereas antioxidant defence was evaluated by analysis of catalase and glutathione. Results: Compared to pre-menopausal women, triglycerides, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were higher and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were lower in post-menopausal women. However, difference was statistically significant only for triglycerides levels. The levels of oxidant/antioxidant system members did not differ between the groups. Conclusion: Postmenopausal status is associated with dyslipidemia, however the alterations in at oxidative status level might be reduced with the use of hormone replacement therapy, or might vary inter-individually. Keywords: Menopause; oxidative stress; antioxidant; lipid profile.

Effects of prenatal exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic field on testicular tissues of male rats
    (2019) Saribal, Devrim; Erdem, Erkan
Aim: Extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) is produced by a large variety of electronic devices in everyday use. This study was therefore undertaken to examine the effects of ELF-MF on oxidative stress parameters in rat testicular tissue. Material and Methods: Twenty-five Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 50 Hz 500μT ELF-MF 24 hours a day, starting from the prenatal period. The exposure continued for further 60 days following the birth. Testicular tissue samples were collected and analyzed. The levels of an oxidative stress marker MDA, and an antioxidant scavenger GSH were investigated. Results: Long-term exposure to ELF-MF increased MDA levels and decreased GSH levels significantly. No correlation was shown between MDA and GSH levels. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, ELF-MF exposure could impair oxidant-antioxidant function and might increase oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the testicular tissue.
