Öğe Hybrid least-squares regression modelling using confidence bounds(2013) Tütmez B.; Kaymak U.One of the questions regarding bridging of soft computing and statistical methods is the (re-)use of information between the two approaches. In this context, we consider in this paper whether statistical confidence bounds can be used in the hybrid fuzzy least squares regression problem. By using the confidence limits as the spreads of the fuzzy numbers, uncertainty estimates for the fuzzy model can be provided. Experiments have been conducted in the paper, both on regression coefficients and the predicted responses of regression models. The findings show that the use of the confidence intervals as the widths of memberships gives successful results and opens new possibilities in system modeling and analysis. © Springer-Verlag 2013.Öğe Ultrasonic evaluation of igneous and metamorphic rocks under compressive loading(Grup Matbaacilik, 2009) Karakus M.; Tütmez B.; Kaleci D.This research aims to assess deformability characteristics of extrusive volcanic and metamorphic rocks under compressive loading using ultrasonic wave propagation technique. An experimental methodology developed in house was used to measure applied load, resultant strain, P and S wave velocities along with maximum amplitudes simultaneously. Wave velocities were measured perpendicular to the compressional axis using pairs of receivers' lead-zirconate piezoceramic transducers (PZT) which are specifically designed for use in geological testing. PUNDIT instrument was used to generate low frequency ultrasonic pulses. According to the results, a non-linear relationship between velocities and stress level that rock specimens have undergone were found. Increase in velocities is closely related to closure of void spaces in the specimens. Rate of velocity increments was also found to be greatest at the early stress level. As a result, ultrasonic velocities can be used to detect high stress concentrations and to monitor stress level in the underground structures.Öğe Use of fuzzy modeling approach in grade estimation(2006) Tütmez B.; Tercan A.E.Grade estimation has a great importance in developing mining investment and projects. In this study, fuzzy logic approach to grade estimation is introduced and the approach is applied to the data obtained from the Karsanti (Adana) chromium deposit. In the application, Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy modelling algorithm is used. The fuzzy model follows the steps of clustering, construction of rule based system and parameter optimization. Estimated values obtained by using a flexible and transparent model structure are compared with actual grade values and the success of the estimation is tested.
