Social physique anxiety levels and influential factors in women who have aesthetic surgery
(OrtadogŸu Reklam Tanitim Yayincilik Turizm Egitim Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., 2017) Derya Y.A.; Taşhan S.T.; Duman M.; Nacar G.
This study aimed to investigate social physique anxiety levels and influential factors in women who have aesthetic surgery. Material and Methods: The study sample included 289 women who underwent aesthetic surgery. Results: The average period of time that women had considered aesthetic surgery was 38.91 ± 3.73/months. The first trait that participants hoped to gain with aesthetic surgery was "being more relaxed and confident" (69.2%). The women who learned about the aesthetic surgery they had from the media (e.g. TV, newspapers), and said that the people around them "judged/condemned" them for having aesthetic surgery, obtained higher total mean scores on the "Social Physique Anxiety Scale" than the other women (p< .05). Conclusion: The study also found that the waiting period for the aesthetic surgery was long, the women were mainly affected by their social environment and the media, and those who had negative feedback from their social environment had higher social physique anxiety. It is recommended to investigate aesthetic surgical operations in large sample groups including frequent genital aesthetic surgery such as labioplasty and vaginoplasty. © 2017 by Türkiye Klinikleri.

A study on the status of and factors in irregular menstruation in university students
(Gulhane Military Medical Academy, 2015) Uçar T.; Derya Y.A.; Taşhan S.T.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to identify the status of and factors in irregular menstruation in university students. Methods: The present descriptive study was conducted at Health College of Inonu University between November 15 and December 01, 2012. The population was comprised of a total of 678 female students who studied Midwifery (n=212) and Nursing (n=466). No specific sample was chosen; therefore, all the participants were included within the scope of the study. However, the sample was comprised of a total of 365 students who volunteered to participate in the study. The data were obtained through the “Personal Information Form” and analyzed via such statistics as Pearson’s Chi-Squared test, Fisher’s exact test and t-test for independent groups. Results: The mean age of the participants was 20.28±1.99. While 46% of them studied midwifery, the remaining 54% studied nursing. The mean menarche age was 13.45±1.55 whereas the mean menstruation length was 5.61±1.88. The prevalence of irregular menstruation in the students was 23.8%. The study could not yield a correlation between irregular menstruation and age, presence of chronic disease and average daily sleep time with irregular menstruation (p>0.05). Those students who do not exercise regularly, had psychiatric disorders, regular drug users, in users of oral contraceptives, smoked and had higher Body-Mass Indices were more likely to suffer from irregular menstruation (p<0.05). Conclusıons: The study concluded that nearly one-fourth of the students had irregular menstruation. The finding is promising in that all these risk factors (obesity, smoking, sedentary living, medication and oral contraceptive use) are avoidable with changes in behaviors, for which healthcare professionals a re significantly responsible. © GATA.
