Seroprevalences of hepatitis B and C among dentists and dental health care workers

HBsAg, anti-HBs, antiHBc total and anti-HCV positivities were investigated by ELISA among 78 dentists and 73 dental health care workers, totally 151 subjects working in Malatya. Six (7.7%) dentists were positive for HBsAg, 21(26.9%) for anti-HBc total, 50(64.1%) for anti- HBs. These markers were positive in 6(% 8.2), 23(% 31.5), 29(% 39.7) of the dental health care workers, respectively. Thirtyeight (48.7%) of the dentists and 11 (14.9%) of the dental health care workers were identified as vaccinated for hepatitis B. The rate of vaccination among the dentists was higher than the dental health care workers (p<0.001). Anti-HCV positivity was not detected among all dentists and dental health care workers. As a result, dentists and other dental health care workers are not at risk more than normal population for hepatitis B and C in our city and country. However, standard infection control programs and immunization should be applied for the protection of both patients and health care workers.
