Öğe Correlation of the radial inclination angle in the distal part of the radius with the volar cortical angle and age-related changes of these angles(Military Medical Acad-Ini, 2023) Yazibasi, Husniye Tugba; Pekmez, Hidir; Agir, Ismail; Uckardes, Fatih; Zencirci, Busra; Aydin, MerveBackground/ Aim. The radial inclination (RI) and volar cortical (VC) angle values used in the treatment of radial distal end fractures may vary depending on factors such as the age and gender of the patient. That raises the question of the compatibility of the standard anatomical plates, which are frequently used in the surgical treatment of these fractures. The aim of the study was to evaluate the VC and RI angles depending on the age and gender of subjects and determine the correlation between these two angles. Methods. A total of 121 individuals (59 females and 62 males) aged 10-65 years were included in the study. The individuals were divided into two groups: a group of 60 adolescents (31 females, 29 males) 10- 20 years old and a group of 61 adults (28 females, 33 males) aged 20-65 years. The subjects were also evaluated between themselves, independently, within each age group. Radiographic images were evaluated by using the 3.0.1.55 version of the KarPacsViewer application. Measurement points were determined, and angles between these points were measured. Statistical analyses were made using the SPSS 15.0 program. Results. When the correlation for 121 individuals was assessed independently of their gender, no statistically significant relationship was found between the RI angle and age (p = 0.616; r = -0.046). A statistically negative (or opposite) relationship was found between the VC angle and age (p < 0.001; r = -0.396). When women and men were compared in terms of the RI and VC angles, no statistically significant difference was found (p = 0.958, p = 0.165, respectively). The VC angle decreased as the age increased in females (p = 0.004; r = -0.365), while both the RI and VC angles decreased with increasing age in males (p = 0.032, r = -0.273; p < 0.0001, r = -0.445, respectively). Conclusion. Our findings regarding the RI and VC angles offer an advantage in terms of determining which plate designs are most appropriate for planning surgical procedures and treatment processes.Öğe Evaluation of cytotoxic, antifungal, and larvicidal activities of different bis-sulfonamide Schiff base compounds(Wiley, 2023) Aydin, Hasan; Akocak, Suleyman; Lolak, Nebih; Yumrutas, Onder; Uslu, Ugur; Bozgeyik, Ibrahim; Uckardes, FatihSchiff bases (imines or azomethines) are versatile ligands synthesized from the condensation of amino compounds with active carbonyl groups and used for many pharmaceutical and medicinal applications. In our study, we aimed to determine the cytotoxic, antifungal and larvicidal activities of biologically potent bis-sulfonamide Schiff base derivatives that were re-synthesized by us. For this aim, 16 compounds were re-synthesized and tested for their cytotoxic, antifungal and larvicidal properties. Among this series, compounds A1B2, A1B4, A4B2, A4B3, and A4B4 were shown to have cytotoxic activity against tested cancer lung cell line (A549). The most potent antifungal activity was observed in compounds A2B1 and A2B2 against all fungi. A1B1 showed the strongest larvicidal effect at all concentrations at the 72nd h (100% mortality). These obtained results demonstrate that these type of bis-substituted compounds might be used as biologically potent pharmacophores against different types of diseases.Öğe The mean platelet volume levels in children with PFAPA syndrome(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2014) Tekin, Mehmet; Toplu, Yuksel; Kahramaner, Zelal; Erdemir, Aydin; Gulyuz, Abdulgani; Konca, Capan; Uckardes, FatihObjectives:. To assess whether mean platelet volume (MPV) can be used as a marker in the differential diagnosis of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome. Methods: The leucocyte counts, thrombocyte counts, and MPV values of 57 children with PFAPA syndrome were recorded during an attack and an attack free period. These values were compared with a healthy control group of 55 individuals. Demographic features of the PFAPA patients group including age, gender and age of first attack, age at diagnosis, frequency of attacks, serum reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were also recorded. Results: The MPV values of the children with PFAPA both during an attack and attack free period were found significantly lower than the MPV values of healthy control group (p < 0.001). Also, the MPV values of the children with PFAPA during an attack were significantly lower than in attack free periods (p < 0.001). The MPV values showed no correlation with leucocytes counts, CRP, and ESR during attacks. A 8.30 fl [area under the curve (AUC: 0.965)] optimal cutoff value of MPV with a sensitivity of 89.5% and specificity of 92.8% was determined during an attack in children with PFAPA. Conclusions: The MPV values during an attack and attack free period of patients with PFAPA is lower than in controls. The MPV values may be used as a marker in the differential diagnosis of PFAPA syndrome but more studies are needed and they should be prospective in order to validate this data. Material and Methods: Demographic characteristics, concomitant conditions, duration of intensive care unit stay, prognosis, and the need and reasons for mechanical ventilation were examined and recorded in a cohort of patients admitted to the tertiary intensive care unit of the Research and Training Hospital, Adiyaman University between January 2014 and December 2015. Results: A total of 164 patients, (82 male and 82 female) with a mean age of 74.18 ± 12.72 years (range: 28-99) admitted and followed up in a tertiary intensive care unit were assessed. The most common indication for admission was ischemic cerebrovascular disease (n=124, 75.6%). The mean duration of intensive care unit stay was 10.76 ± 12 days. Pneumonia, multi-organ failure syndrome, acute respiratory distress syndrome, menengitis, and respiratory arrest were found in 21.3%, 14.0%, 1.8%, 0.6%, and 28.7% of the patients, respectively. Invasive mechanical ventilatory support was given to 48.2% of the cases, with a mean duration of 3.84 ± 7.57 days. In all, 17.7% of the patients survived. Conclusion: Prolonged duration of intensive care unit stay in critically ill patients as well as the occurrence of concomitant conditions lead to an increased need for invasive mechanical ventilation with an associated increase in mortality. We believe that admission of critically ill patients to specialized intensive care units or closed-system intensive care units with multi-disciplinary care may help improve the prognosis and the quality of care.Öğe WhatsApp messaging improves communication in an oral and maxillofacial surgery team(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2019) Koparal, Mahmut; Unsal, Haluk Yener; Alan, Hilal; Uckardes, Fatih; Gulsun, BelginObjective: Smartphones have become very popular among oral and maxillofacial surgeons. WhatsApp is an application that enables users to send voice, text, and multimedia messages using the group communication feature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of WhatsApp messaging as a mode of consultation within an oral and maxillofacial surgery team. Materials and methods: A retrospective study on WhatsApp group conversations amongst oral and maxillofacial surgeons was performed between July 2015 and July 2016. A WhatsApp group consisting of senior and junior surgeons was created, and many consultations were recorded. Seven hundred fifty-six consultations were included in the study. In this study, the arrival and response times of messages, types of cases, timing of consultation's end, consultant locations, contents of multimedia messages, and the categories/types of messages were evaluated. During consultations, some cases were discussed with text messages via WhatsApp, and some cases with voice and image messages via WhatsApp, with or without WhatsApp text messages. In addition, several cases were discussed with video messages via WhatsApp. Thus, a total of 1747 messages reflecting four different message types were included in this study: 754 (43%) were text messages, 752 (43%) were photographic images, 213 (12%) were videos, and 28 (nearly 2%) were voice messages. Results: The most frequent consultations concerned impacted teeth (n = 363, 48.01%). Most consultations were resolved using WhatsApp (n = 306, 64.4%), and consultants were often not in the hospital during these consultations (n = 411, 54.3%). Most messages sent by consultants were conclusive (n = 306, 74.4%). Conclusion: We conclude that WhatsApp is a simple, free, and practical application, which allows efficient consultation when consultants are not in the hospital.
