Öğe A Cross-sectional, Comparative Study of Oxidative Metabolism and Oxidative DNA Damage in Adult Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder(Yerkure Tanitim & Yayincilik Hizmetleri A S, 2020) Aksoy, Ihsan; Gucyetmez, Volkan; Kilic, Osman Hasan Tahsin; Unal, Ahmet; Altindag, AbdurrahmanObjective: Changes in oxidative metabolism are increasingly gaining attention as an important factor for many medical illnesses such as carcinogenesis and psychiatric disorders including ADHD. Only a handful of studies have investigated the possible relation between adult attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (A-ADHD) and oxidative stress. However, we found no research about its relation to oxidative DNA damage. Methods: The study comprised of 43 A-ADHD patients and 30 healthy controls. Serum total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels were measured and compared in a cross-sectional design. Results: No difference was observed in terms of oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage across groups. Patients with comorbid psychiatric diagnosis had significantly increased TOS and OSI levels than patients with A-ADHD alone, although their comorbidity was in remission. Conclusion: According to our results, oxidative balance among adult ADHD patients were not impaired, this was discordant with the majority of the findings of the studies performed in children and adolescents and animals. Oxidative stress may not have a specific role in the etiopathogenesis of ADHD in adults. It is more plausible that other factors such as comorbid disorders affect and confound oxidative stress in adult population.Öğe Evaluation of psychiatric consultations requested for cancer patients hospitalized in a university hospital(2021) Cansel, Neslihan; Unal, AhmetAim: Cancer is one the most important health problems of today. It is not just a medical and physical disease but a severe chronic condition with dispositional and social components. In our study, we aimed to analyze the diagnoses and treatments of oncologic inpatients whom were requested psychiatric consultations.Materials and Methods: 139 consulted patients of 828 inpatients who were hospitalized in Oncology and Radiation Department of Inonu University Faculty of Medicine, between January 1st, 2019 and February 27th, 2019 were included in the study. Sociodemographic data and examination findings of patients were obtained from electronic file records retrospectively. Results: The most common was gastric (14.9%); the second was breast (12.2%) and third was lung cancer. Depression was the most common psychiatric disease among these patients with 39.3% of women and 24% of men. The most preferred medications were escitalopram (35.4%) and quetiapine (20.8%).Conclusion: Physicians and other healthcare professionals responsible for the treatment of cancer patients should carefully evaluate these patients psychologically who may have the chance of getting psychiatric treatment only while hospitalized.Öğe Oxidative Metabolism and Oxidative DNA Damage in Bipolar Disorder: There are No Difference in Acute and Euthymic State(Yerkure Tanitim & Yayincilik Hizmetleri A S, 2021) Ermis, Berna; Sagaltici, Eser; Unal, Ahmet; Alici, Demet; Ozyurt, Ayse BinnurObjective: This study aimed to investigate oxidative metabolism and oxidative DNA damage in the state of euthymic and active disease in patients with Bipolar disorder (BD). Methods: 40 active (26 mania and14 depression episodes) and 40 euthymic state of disease of the 80 patients with BD and 48 healthy volunteers were included to the study. Measurement of the levels of serum total antioxidant (TAS) and serum total oxidant (TOS), Oxidative Stress Index (OSI), and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels were calculated and evaluated. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) were administered. Results: In patients with BD, TAS, TOS, OSI, and 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher than controls (all p<0.001). TOS level significantly higher in female than men in BD (p=0.016). A significantly positive weak correlation was detected between the TAS level and CGI score (p=0.031, r=0.241), HAM-D score (p=0.040, r=0.231) in BD. When patients in the active and euthymic state were compared with the control group separately, in both groups TAS, TOS, OSI, and 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher than controls (all p<0.001). However, there was no significant difference in TOS, OSI, and 8-OHdG levels between patients in the active or euthymic state of disease. Conclusion: Oxidants and DNA damage are high in patient with BD. No difference of the oxidants and DNA damage between the active and euthymic state of disease reveals that oxidative stress damages on the body although the symptoms of the disease to quiet down.Öğe Readability and quality levels of websites that contain written information about anterior cruciate ligament injury: A survey of Turkish websites(Turkish Assoc Orthopaedics Traumatology, 2022) Sahin, Abdullah Alper; Boz, Mehmet; Kececi, Tolga; Unal, Ahmet; Cirakli, AlperObjective: This study aimed to evaluate the contents and readability levels of informative texts about anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on Turkish websites. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, online searches were performed using the Google, Yandex, and Yahoo search engines on 16, 17, and 18 November 2020, respectively. In these three search engines, 'anterior cruciate ligament', 'anterior cruciate ligament surgery', 'ACL', and 'ACL surgery' were entered in Turkish. The first 10 pages from each search on the websites were collected. The websites were divided into 3 groups according to their sources. Group 1 was classified as websites prepared by private hospitals or medical centers; group 2, as individual websites of orthopedics and traumatology physicians; and group 3, as non-profit websites providing general health information that does not fall into these two groups. The websites were analyzed based on both the website interface and a specific content scoring guide by two reviewers. The Flesch Kincaid (FK) grade level and the Flesch reading ease (FRE) score were used to determine the readability of information on the websites. Results: Eighty-five unique websites were evaluated. The mean quality score of all the websites was 10.4 +/- 4.5 with a maximum score of 25 (range = 3-21). No significant difference in quality score was found between the groups. The mean FK grade score of all the websites was 11.2 +/- 1.7 (range =7.9-15.3). The mean FRE score of all the websites was 46.8 +/- 7.7 (range = 24.1-63.7). No statistically significant differences in FK grade and FRE score were found between the groups. Although 59 websites (69%) had a third-party seal indicating the certification of one of the organizations established to provide a standard of health information on the Internet, only 21 websites (25%) were updated in the year before the search. Conclusion: The readability level of the informative texts about the ACL on the Turkish websites was above the educational level in Turkey. In addition, the quality score of the Turkish websites related to ACL was low. The content of the informative texts should be organized while taking into account the patients' literacy level.Öğe Substance use characteristics, treatment completion rates and related factors of patients in Gaziantep AMATEM in 2019; a retrospective study(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2022) Demir, Bahadir; Sahin, Sengul Kocamer; Elboga, Gulcin; Altindag, Abdurrahman; Unal, AhmetObjective: Substance use and addiction are an increasing problem worldwide. Knowledge of the frequency and features of substance use contribute to ascertaining the addiction trends in a country, region or city, taking precautions for drug use, establishing policies on treatment and rehabilitation, and determining patient needs. Methods: The files of individuals who were hospitalized in the Gaziantep Alcohol and Substance Addictions Treatment Center (AMATEM) Clinic between 01.01.2019 and 31.12.2019 were examined retrospectively. The SPSS 22.0 program was used in statistical analyses of patient data. Results: This study included 694 patients, where 670 of whom were male (96.5%) and 24 were female (3.5%). Considering the diagnoses of the patients, opioid use disorder and amphetamine/methamphetamine use disorder were the most common diagnoses at 47.1% and 13%, respectively. A statistically significant difference was found between the diagnostic groups in terms of age, educational status, occupation, whether there was any suicide attempts, and treatment outcomes (p value for all <0.05). Conclusions: Our study is the first study conducted in the Gaziantep AMATEM Clinic, which is the only inpatient drug and alcohol center in the Southeastern Anatolia region. Our findings showed that alcohol/substance use is a dynamic problem that negatively affects many areas of life including work and education life, and family and social relationships.Öğe Substance use profile, treatment compliance, treatment outcomes and related factors in probation: a retrospective file review(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2021) Demir, Bahadir; Kocamer Sahin, Sengul; Altindag, Abdurrahman; Elboga, Gulcin; Unal, AhmetObjective In this study, we aimed to investigate the sociodemographic characteristics of the individuals who mandated to the probation unit as the substances they use, their compliance with the programs, treatment outcomes and the relationships between these parameters. Secondly we aimed to determine the predictive factors that guide in taking protective measures. Methods The files of the individuals who applied to probation clinic of Gaziantep 25 Aralik State Hospital between 01.01.2019-31.12.2019 were examined retrospectively. SPSS 22.0 program was used to statistical analysis. Results Totally 1024 cases were included in the study. Most of the cases were between the ages of 16-35 (84.1%) and 68.3% of individuals were primary school graduates. Most (n: 607, 59.3%) were single in terms of marital status. Substance was detected in the urine of 30.3% of the applicants (n: 311). Among the substances detected in urine, amphetamine-methamphetamine was in the first place with 13.6%. In terms of treatment compliance levels of probation, it was seen that 593 (57.9%) reports were prepared as no treatment required, 117 (11.4%) were compliant to treatment and 303 (29.6%) were noncompliant to treatment. A statistically significant difference was found between working status and treatment outcomes (p = 0.001). When the first urine result of the patients were grouped as negative and positive; A statistically significant difference was found between the first urine test and the treatment outcomes and criminal score (for both p = 0.001).There was a statistically significant difference between the status of being a probation measure previously and the outcome of treatment (p = 0.019). Conclusion In our study, the most used substance type was found to be amphetamine-methamphetamine (13.6%). Prevalence in substance use appears to be changing. This is an important finding about the prevalence of use of amphetamine-methamphetamine in Turkey. We suggest that those who have irregular jobs in the probation process, those with substance metabolites detected in the first urine, and those who have previously had probation precautions may have a poor prognosis and that it may be more effective to apply to those profiles in a general program that includes social and occupational fields.
