    Mature spinal teratoma associated with thickened filum terminale -: Case report

    A 30-year-old man presented with an intradural spinal teratoma with thickened filum terminale manifesting as urinary and sexual disturbances, and low back pain persisting for 4 years. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging revealed thickened filum terminale containing a heterogeneously enhanced intradural lesion extending from the L-3 to L-4 levels and in contact with the conus medullaris. The filum terminale was incised and the tumor was totally resected. The histological diagnosis was mature teratoma consisting of three germ cell layers. The patient's complaints had completely resolved 6 months later.

    Resveratrol may reduce apoptosis of rat testicular germ cells after experimental testicular torsion

    The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of resveratrol on apoptosis of testicular germ cells after experimental testicular torsion. Thirty Wistar albino rats were divided into 3 groups. Torsions were created by rotating the right testis 720 degrees in a clockwise direction for 4 h in all groups except the control group (group 1). They were then repaired by counter-rotation and replaced into the scrotum. In group 2, saline was infused 30 min before detorsion. In group 3, 30 mg/kg resveratrol was infused 30 min before detorsion. In groups 2 and 3, the bilateral testes were removed to determine germ cell apoptosis after 20 h of detorsion. The number of apoptotic cells was evaluated using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) technique and caspase 3. Mean apoptotic score of ipsilateral testes in group 3 was lower than that of group 2 (p < 0.05). Mean apoptotic score of the contralateral testes in group 3 was not different from that of group 2 (p > 0.05). The present study demonstrates that intraperitoneal administration of resveratrol in rats may decrease germ cell apoptosis in the ipsilateral testes.

    Spindle cell lipoma in an intramuscular lipoma

    Intramuscular lipoma (IML) is a relatively common variant of lipomas. The most important sites for IML are the large muscles of the extremities. Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is a rare and distinct variant of lipoma. Most SCL arise in the neck, shoulders or back. It has also been described in unusual sites, such as the oral cavity, larynx, bronchus, breast, orbit and extremities. However, localization of a SCL in an IML has not been described yet. Thus, we present the first SCL located in an IML, which was localized underneath the fascia and embedded within the left sartorius muscle of a 55-year-old man. Microscopically, the SCL component of the tumor was sharply circumscribed by a fibrous capsule and clearly seperated from the IML in which it was localized. The collagen-forming spindle cells of the SCL showed neither atypia nor pleomorphism. These cells stained positive for CD34, while the mature fat tissue component of the SCL was positive for S-100 protein and negative for CD34. Spindle cells were negative for S-100 protein. Vimentin stained both components of the SCL, as well as the striated muscle fibers and mature fat tissue of the IML. In conclusion, careful morphological observation along with immunohistochemistry for CD34 and S-100 protein are essential to differentiate this rare tumor from lesions that enter the differential diagnosis.

    Synchronous endometrial and cervical tumors in a 26-year-old nullipara: Diagnostic modalities updated

    Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), performed on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, provides useful information at the biochemical level. MRS has been used to measure tissue concentrations of proton-containing compounds such as organic and amino acids, and sugars in living tissues. We have used MRS in a 26-year-old female with suspected cervical and endometrial carcinomas. With the use of the above mentioned technique, biochemical differences in the endometrium and the cervix tissues were detected. The presented case is the first virgin patient in the relevant literature in whom endometrial and cervical carcinoma was detected. Choline (Cho), creatine (Cr), N-acetylaspartate (NAA), lipid and lactate region of the MRS spectrum suggested that the technique could be used as an indicator of metabolic alterations in the cervical and endometrial tumor cells.
