Öğe Ectopic bone formation in thyroid gland: report of sixteen cases and comprehensive literature review(Verduci Publisher, 2023) Sogutcu, N.; Akbulut, S.; Sari, A.; Yavuz, R.; Yagmur, Y.; Colak, C.- OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the outcomes of patients with ectopic bone formation (EBF) diagnosed in thyroidecto-my specimen.PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospec-tively analyzed the data of 16 patients who un-derwent thyroidectomy between February 2009 and June 2018 and whose pathology examina-tion diagnosed EBF. RESULTS: Fourteen patients underwent bilat-eral total thyroidectomy (BTT), one patient re-quired BTT with central lymph node dissection, and one patient was subjected to BTT with func-tional lymph node dissection. On histopatholog-ical examination, left lobe EBF was diagnosed in four patients; left lobe EBF with bilateral pap-illary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in two; left lobe EBF with left lobe PTC in one; left lobe EBF with left follicular adenoma in one; left lobe EBF with right lobe papillary thyroid microcarcinoma in one; bilateral EBF in one; right lobe EBF with ex-tramedullary hematopoiesis in one; right lobe EBF in three; right lobe EBF with right lobe med-ullary thyroid carcinoma in one, and right lobe EBF with bilateral lymphocytic thyroiditis in one. One of the five patients who underwent bone marrow biopsy was diagnosed with myelopro-liferative dysplasia, and another with polycythe-mia vera. Three patients were treated medically for anemia because no other pathological find-ings could be observed.CONCLUSIONS: There is a lack of literature data about the clinical significance of EBF in the thyroid gland in cases with no concomitant he-matological diseases. People who have been di-agnosed with EBF in the thyroid gland should be checked for hematological diseases.Öğe Laparoscopic management of hydatid cyst of the liver(Sa Medical Assoc, 2016) Yagmur, Y.; Akbulut, S.; Gumus, S.; Babur, M.; Can, M. A.Background: Hydatid liver disease management has evolved from traditional operative approaches to the increasing application of laparoscopic treatments. We aimed to prospectively assess the early outcomes of laparoscopic treatment at our institution. Patients and methods: Forty-four patients with hydatid disease of liver were screened with ultrasonography and computed tomography of the abdomen to exclude Gharbi type V cysts. The distribution of cyst sizes was: 1-4 cm, 10; 5-10 cm, 24; 10-15 cm, 8; > 15 cm, 2 patients. The following laparoscopy therapies were performed: 30 patients had cystectomy alone, 14 patients had partial pericystectomy. Pericystectomy was performed using a hook and harmonic tissue sealers with the resection made through normal liver tissue. Results: Three patients were converted to open surgery. Seven patients had biliary leakage through their cystic cavity drains. Five stopped spontaneously by the 7th postoperative day and 2 responded to ERCP sphincterotomy. There were no deaths and no recurrence of disease noted by 6 months. Conclusion: In selected patients with hepatic hydatid disease, a laparoscopic treatment is feasible and safe with low conversion rate and short term recurrences.Öğe Urinary incontinence in women aged 40 and older: Its prevalence, risk factors, and effect on quality of life(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2021) Yagmur, Y.; Gul, S.Background: Urinary incontinence (UI) paves the way for many health problems ranging from discomforts of continuous wetness and irritation to social isolation and depression in women. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of UI in women aged 40 and older as well as its risk factors and also its effect on quality of life. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 286 women included in the sample. Subjects were selected randomly. The data were collected using a questionnaire, which was prepared by the researchers, and the Incontinence Quality of Life Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using number, percentage, mean, Chi-square test, and binary logistic regression analysis in the SPSS program. Results: It was found that 86 (30.1%) of the women experienced the symptom of UI. The women had mostly the mixed UI. The correlations between UI and age, educational level, status of employment, the presence of chronic diseases, chronic constipation, difficult birth history, and state of menopause were significant. Total mean score of the women with UI for the Incontinence Quality of Life Questionnaire was 73.62 +/- 24.36 and the most affected domain of the quality of life field was social embarrassment. Conclusions: In the present study, it was found that UI was prevalent in Turkish women and impaired their quality of life. The results can help to provide education and counseling services to women in a society-sensitive manner.
