Öğe Amygdalin in bitter and sweet seeds of apricots(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2014) Karsavuran, Nazan; Charehsaz, Mohammad; Celik, Hayati; Asma, Bayram Murat; Yakinci, Cengiz; Aydin, AhmetHydrogen cyanide (HCN) poisoning due to amygdalin (AMY) in apricot seeds is one of the public health issues in Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate the AMY content of 13 different apricot seeds including bitter and sweet ones, and which are either sulfurized or roasted. The AMY content was determined by a high-performance liquid chromatography. Release of HCN was predicted and total amount of seeds which can cause poisoning was calculated. The mean AMY content of bitter seeds was 26 +/- 14 mg g(-1) and that of sweet seeds was 0.16 +/- 0.09 mg g(-1). The consumption of small amounts of bitter seeds may cause cyanide poisoning.Öğe Assessment of the Utility of Plusoptix A09 Handheld Photo-refractometer in Screening Refractory Errors and Amblyopia in Children(Georg Thieme Verlag Kg, 2021) Sinanoglu, Muhammed Selcuk; Yakinci, Cengiz; Demirel, SonerThe aim of this study is to find out the frequency of anisometropic amblyopia in children and to increase awareness about this disease. All children between the ages of 4 and 10 years who were attending 11 kindergarten and primary schools determined by provincial directorate for national education in the center of Malatya were included. A screening team including interns and a resident from the Department of Pediatrics have used Plusoptix A09 handheld photo-refractometer device for detecting amblyopia and its reasons. A total of 7,000 students were screened. The mean age of the students was 7.4 +/- 2 years. Amblyopia was suspected in 357 cases with the Plusoptix S09 screening. After eye examinations performed by an ophthalmologist, 303 cases were found to have pathologic eye examination. Amblyopia was found in 67 (18.8%) of the 303 cases, and anisometropic amblyopia was found in 59 of 67 cases. As a result of the screening, sensitivity of Plusoptix A09 was found to be 88.1%, while its specificity was found to be 88.6%. Its positive predictive value was found to be 64.0% and its negative predictive value was found to be 97.0%. We believe that with screenings performed by health professionals who are given short-term training by using a device that can conduct remote measurements, detection of anisometropic amblyopia, which is the most frequent reason for amblyopia, can be done in a fast and relatively less expensive way and with the minimum number of specialist physician required. This way, children with amblyopia can reach the ophthalmologist earlier for treatment.Öğe A Case of Brucellosis Misdiagnosed as Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever(Ankara Microbiology Soc, 2012) Almis, Habip; Yakinci, CengizBrucellosis which is a zoonotic infection, is an important public health problem in Turkey and all over the world. The disease may involve many organs and systems. Since the symptoms of brucellosis are non-specific, difficulties in differential diagnosis and misdiagnosis are frequent. In this case report we present a case of brucellosis, misdiagnosed as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). A 13-year-old boy was referred from another medical center with preliminary diagnosis of CCHF and admitted to our clinic with fever and a history of presence of a tick on his back. His physical observation only included splenomegaly. The laboratory results on admission were anemia, thrombocytopenia, elevation of acute phase reactants and liver transaminase levels. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed splenomegaly. Since the patient had anemia, epistaxis, fever and thrombocytopenia, he was initially diagnosed as CCHF. Meantime serum sample of the patient had been sent to Refik Saydam National Public Health Agency for CC-IF PCR test. The fever of the patient could not be controlled. His detailed medical history revealed stockbreeding and consumption of raw milk products. Patient's signs and symptoms were also compatible with brucellosis and standard tube agglutination test for brucellosis was positive at 1/1280 titer in serum. The patient was diagnosed as brucellosis and the treatment was started with combination of rifampicin (1 x 600 mg/day) and doxycycline (2 x 100 mg/day). Blood cultures yielded negative result. The PCR tests for CCHF was found also negative. His fever and other complaints improved with treatment which was completed in six weeks and the follow-up was without complications. Turkey is endemic both for brucellosis and CCHF. This case was reported to emphasize that the cases of brucellosis could mimic other diseases and brucellosis should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of CCHF.Öğe A case with pyopericardium and cardiac tamponade induced by migration of ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter(Baycinar Medical Publ-Baycinar Tibbi Yayincilik, 2014) Karakurt, Cemsit; Celik, Serkan Fazli; Ozturk, Mehmet; Disli, Olcay Murat; Yakinci, CengizVentriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is a method used in the treatment of hydrocephalus. In this article, we report a four-year-old girl who was implanted a VP shunt due to hydrocephalus, and referred to our clinic due to dyspnea and cardiomegalia. Echocardiographic examination revealed cardiac tamponade and pericardial effusion. Thorax computed tomography, which was performed due to suspicion of migration of the VP catheter to the pericardium, showed that the VP catheter tip was inside the pericardium. Pericardiectomy was performed due to pericardial constriction was developed after tube drainage, and the VP shunt catheter was shortened and replaced into the abdominal cavity.Öğe COMMONLY CONFUSED TERMS IN MEDICINE(Nobel Ilac, 2017) Seren, Lale Pulat; Yakinci, CengizLanguage is an instrument for handing down thoughts, scientific knowledge, poetic and literary works. Hilal; Sezgin, Deniz; Yakinci, CengizAim: Health literacy is common concern of everyone, especially healthcare professionals. A field study including health professionals working on different fields in Malatya and Ktahya is planned in order to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of healthcare professionals on health literacy. Methods: A total of 514 healthcare professionals, 333 from Turgut (TM) zal Medical Center in Malatya and 181 from Dumlupinar University Evliya Celebi Education and Research Hospital in Ktahya were interviewed in this stu. First question asked was Do you know health literacy concept?. It's been asked where they have heard the health literacy concept for the first time, if they know the basic principles of health literacy and for whom health literacy is to the participants who answered yes to the first question. Its been asked if healthcare professionals evaluate health literacy of their patients during their daily work and if they give advices on healthcare resources. Results from both cities were evaluated together. Results: 471 (% 91.6) of healthcare professionals answered no when asked if they know what health literacy concept is and only 43 (% 8.4) said yes. 30 (% 69.8) of these 43 participants said health literacy is for people who aren't healthcare professionals and 13(% 30.2) of them said its for healthcare professionals. Conclusions: We observed in our study that healthcare professionals, especially medical doctors don't have enough knowledge on health literacy. Awareness and knowledge on health literacy was similarly low in both cities. Health literacy concept, which is developed for patients, is not well known by healthcare professionals and must be dealt seriously.Öğe Isolated preauricular pits and tags: is it necessary to investigate renal abnormalities and hearing impairment?(Springer, 2008) Firat, Yezdan; Sireci, Sule; Yakinci, Cengiz; Akarcay, Mustafa; Karakas, Hakki Muammer; Firat, Ahmet Kemal; Kizilay, AhmetWe investigated the incidence and co-existence of hearing impairment and renal abnormalities in healthy children with preauricular tags and pits. Study population consists of 13,740 primary school children from routine health check. Thirty-five children with preauricular tags and pits were noted. Control group consisted of 91 patients without pits and tags, who underwent renal ultrasound and were scheduled to pediatric outpatient clinic. Urinanalysis, renal ultrasound, otoacoustic emission were performed in both the groups. The prevalence of renal abnormality (1/36; 2.7%) and hearing impairment (1/36; 2.7%) in patients with preauricular tags and pits was similar to that of control group (3/91; 3.2% and 4/91; 4.3%) (P = 0.87, P = 0.64, respectively). According to our results, it is not necessary to investigate hearing or urinary abnormality in patients with preauricular tag or pit, unless there is an association of a syndrome or family history of hearing or renal impairment.Öğe Possible Pathogenic Link Between Migraine and Urotensin-II(Sage Publications Inc, 2008) Bicak, Ugur; Karabiber, Hamza; Ozerol, Halil I.; Aslan, Mehmet; Ilhan, Atilla; Yakinci, CengizOur aim was to determine the levels of human urotensin-II (hU-II) in the plasma of migraine patients and controls, to ascertain if there were a difference in the pathogenesis of migraine. A total of 27 patients who suffer from migraines and 27 controls were included in the study. Venous blood samples were drawn twice both from migraine patients and controls to measure hU-II plasma levels. The average levels of hU-II during migraine episode, between episodes, and controls were found to be 0.483, 0.493, and 0.737 pg/mL, respectively The levels of hU-II in the controls were higher significantly. When comparisons were made according to sex, age groups, and types and durations of migraine, there was no significant difference in the levels of hU-II in the patients. The low levels of hU-II in the plasma of migraine patients compared with controls may be an indicator of its role in the pathogenesis.Öğe The prevalence of vitamin d deficiency-insufficiency in medical faculty students(Inonu University Medical Faculty Department of Pediatrics, Malatya, Turkey, 2018) Sevimli, Resit; Yakinci, Cengiz; Encan, Mehmet Esref; Polat, Haci; Sakci, Mehmetsah; Sagir, Ahmet; Kayhan, EdaÖz: Aim: The vitamin D deficiency is a pandemic health problem due to worldwide modernization. We tried to determine the impact of the reduced sun exposure on the vitamin D levels of the medical faculty students due to the long study hours and indoor study environment and classrooms. Material and Method: Two-hundred and eleven (113 women, 98 men) medical faculty students were included in the study. Blood samples were obtained from the students and serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 levels were measured on the same day. Students were healthy individuals, aged 17-29 years (mean age= 19 years). Data were analyzed using SPSS software program. The frequency distribution of the qualitative data and arithmetic mean, minimum, maximum and standard deviation of the quantitative data were used to define descriptive statistics. Non-parametric tests and Chi-square test were used for the analysis of qualitative data; the analysis of the quantitative data was done by observing normally distributed data. The significance level of Chi-square test, independent-student t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were accepted as p?0.05. Results: Serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 levels was below 20 ng/ml in 56% (n=118) of the students, of which 72% (n=85) were women. Conclusion: Especially, women had high levels of vitamin D deficiency in our study. This high ratio gives rise to thought that women spend more of their time indoor spaces due to modernization., women are exposed to sun light less than men, and thus they have higher levels of vitamin D deficiency.Öğe The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency-insufficiency in medical faculty students(2018) Sevimli, Reşit; Yakinci, Cengiz; Encan, Mehmet Esref; Polat, Haci; Sakci, Mehmetsah; Sagir, Ahmet; Kayhan, EdaAim: The vitamin D deficiency is a pandemic health problem due to worldwide modernization. Results: Seventy-six infants (10.5%) had congenital anomalies of the kidney and the urinary tracts that prompted medical and/or surgical intervention. Of whom, 32 were diagnosed with antenatal ultrasonography and 44 during their initial postnatal ultrasonography screening. The most frequent identified pathology was hydronephrosis, in particular physiologic hydronephrosis (35.8%). The most frequent congenital urinary anomaly which caused hydronephrosis was ureteropelvic obstruction. Conclusion: It is suggested to apply the urinary ultrasonography scanning to all the infants that are born or brought to the university hospital. If possible, it is to be considered to include urinary ultrasonography scanning in newborn scanning programs.Öğe Usage of Turkish language in medical literature and frequent errors(Galenos Yayincilik, 2011) Yakinci, Cengiz; Celiloglu, Ozgu Suna; Aksu, BelginLanguage is an instrument for handing down the thoughts, scientific acquirements, poetic and literary products. The initial efforts for determining suitable Turkish counterparts against foreign words and terms have began during the Republican Era. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, with an educational vision beyond his epoch, has promoted Turkish language as a scientific language instead of Persian and Arabic languages thus conquered our language's independence. In the information age which we are living today, the communities should improve and support their national language of science in order to perform the existing data and to establish every individual to reach the scientific evaluations. The frequently-encountered cases in medical literature that are unappropriate for Turkish language are classified as follows: the foreign terms and words used in spite of an existing Turkish counterpart, ignoring methods for derivation of Turkish terms, translation mistakes, faults in spelling, words denoting different meanings with similar way of writings. The usage of Turkish terms within the academic level, thesis of proficiency and literary products and maintaining writing skills suitable for the Turkish language spelling rules are important for our language to become a scientific language, and pioneering and becoming a precedent efforts are required (Turk Arch Ped 2011; 46: 186-90)Öğe Xanthium strumarium Poisoning Requiring Liver Transplantation(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014) Karabiber, Hamza; Almis, Habip; Selimoglu, M.
