Excessive reliance on algorithms risks damaging the patient-nurse relationship, potentially reducing individuals to data points. Significant ethical issues, including data privacy and algorithmic bias, require careful consideration.ConclusionAI should be implemented to enhance, not replace, human interaction in mental health nursing. A new synthesis is proposed where AI systems support efficiency, thereby allowing nurses more time to address patients' complex emotional needs. Key recommendations include restructuring nursing education, creating robust feedback channels, and establishing comprehensive ethical principles to preserve the essential human dimension of care.Öğe Associations between Psychological Resilience and Social Support with Posttraumatic Growth in Breast Cancer Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2024) Harmanci, Pinar; Yildiz, ErmanThis cross-sectional study examined the associations of psychological resilience, perceived social support, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in breast cancer (BC) patients (N = 203). The participants' mean age was 43.14 +/- 9.06, 80.3% were married, 40.9% had a university degree, 61.6% were unemployed, and 72.4% reported a moderate economic status. No significant correlation was found between PTG and psychological resilience, while a moderate and positive correlation was observed between PTG and perceived social support. A weak and positive correlation was also detected between perceived social support and psychological resilience. Professionals working in the field of psycho-oncology and social work can make attempts to increase psychological resilience, perceived social support, and PTG in BC patients.Öğe Balancing Innovation and Humanism: An Ethical Debate on AI and VR in Psychiatric Nursing Education(Wiley, 2026) Yildiz, ErmanBackground: Artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) technologies are increasingly integrated into psychiatric nursing education, presenting both significant opportunities for innovation and profound risks of dehumanisation. Aim: This debate essay critically examines the central tension between leveraging AI and VR for enhanced educational outcomes (innovation) and the imperative to preserve essential human elements grounded in personalist ethics (dignity, autonomy, integrity, vulnerability) in psychiatric nursing preparation. ' Method: Drawing on a critical analysis of current literature identified through targeted database searches and theoretical synthesis, theoretical perspectives including personalist ethics, sociotechnical theories like posthumanism and cyborg ontology, and technology adoption, and considering the implications for individuals with lived experience, this essay debates the potential benefits and ethical perils of AI/VR integration in this sensitive field. Results: The analysis suggests AI and VR offer potential pedagogical advantages, including standardised skills practice, safe exposure to high-risk scenarios, and enhanced clinical reasoning development. However, significant concerns arise regarding the potential for simulated experiences to foster reductive understandings of mental health conditions, erode human connection (integrity, dignity), introduce bias (threatening autonomy, dignity), compromise privacy (integrity), and exacerbate global inequities. The integration challenges echo controversies seen in clinical practice, such as those surrounding surveillance technologies. The impact on individuals with lived experience, both in how they are represented and how future nurses interact with them, is a central ethical concern. Conclusion: A 'new synthesis' guided by personalist principles is necessary, moving beyond a simple technology-versus-humanity dichotomy. AI and VR should be implemented strategically to augment, not supplant, human-centred pedagogy. This requires robust ethical frameworks, culturally responsive design, critical reflection, faculty development, and a constant focus on ensuring these tools ultimately support the development of nurses who are both technologically adept and ethically grounded, attuned to the human experience of mental health distress. The goal is innovation that serves, rather than undermines, compassionate care and human dignity.Öğe Beyond Self-Stigma in Bipolar Disorder: Self-Compassion as a Target for Mental Health Nursing Interventions-Conditional Indirect Effects by Treatment Adherence and Age(Wiley, 2026) Yildiz, Erman; Orum, GamzeSelf-stigma profoundly impacts psychological well-being in individuals with bipolar disorder, yet the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. This study examined whether self-compassion mediates the relationship between self-stigma and psychological well-being, whether treatment adherence moderates this mediating pathway, and whether age moderates the direct relationship. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 121 outpatients diagnosed with Bipolar Type I Disorder receiving care at two hospitals in Eastern T & uuml;rkiye between January 2024 and February 2025. Participants completed validated measures of self-stigma, self-compassion, and psychological well-being during clinical remission. Data were analysed using mediation, moderated mediation, and simple moderation models with bootstrap procedures. Self-stigma demonstrated a strong negative total effect on well-being. Self-compassion partially mediated this relationship, explaining 27% of the total effect. Critically, moderated mediation analysis revealed that treatment adherence significantly altered the strength of this mediating pathway. Among individuals with poor treatment adherence, self-stigma more severely compromised self-compassion, resulting in a substantially stronger indirect effect on well-being compared to those with good adherence. The difference between these conditional indirect effects was statistically significant. Additionally, age moderated the direct relationship between self-stigma and well-being, with younger adults showing greater vulnerability than older adults, though age did not moderate the self-compassion pathway. These findings identify self-compassion as a key but conditionally effective protective mechanism against self-stigma. Treatment adherence emerges as a critical factor that preserves this protective mechanism, suggesting that adherence promotion represents both a clinical and psychosocial intervention target for mental health nurses.Öğe The care burden and coping levels of chronic psychiatric patients' caregivers(Wiley, 2018) Aylaz, Rukuye; Yildiz, ErmanPurposeThis descriptive study was conducted in order to determine care burden of caregivers of chronic psychiatric patients and their levels of coping with stress. MethodsThe study was conducted with 134 caregivers of chronic psychiatric patients. The following data collection tools were used: the personal information form, the ZBI and SCI. The study participants were selected from the population by using an improbable random sampling method. ResultsThe average age of the caregivers was 49.9513.68 and the majority were married and primary school graduates. ConclusionThis study determined that caregivers experienced a high level of burden. However, while the deal with their difficulties of providing effective care was found to have more coping methods they use.Öğe Digital Support for Complex Interventions in Psychiatric Nursing: Implementation Models and Effectiveness Evaluation(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2025) Yildiz, Erman; Harmanci, PinarDigital technologies are increasingly integrated into psychiatric nursing, yet a comprehensive understanding of their implementation and effectiveness remains limited. This bibliometric analysis explored the research landscape of digitally-supported interventions, focusing on models, effectiveness, and future directions. A systematic search of the Web of Science Core Collection (2019-2024) was conducted, combining bibliometric mapping with thematic analysis. Four thematic clusters emerged: (1) Digital Psychiatry and m-Health Applications, (2) Simulation and VR in Nursing Education, (3) Telemedicine and Mental Health in the COVID-19 Era, and (4) Foundational Concepts of Digital Mental Health. m-Health applications were central themes, while telemedicine's role was crucial during the pandemic. The study highlights the importance of digital technologies, especially m-health, in psychiatric nursing and underscores the need to enhance nurses' digital skills and develop effective nurse-led interventions. The analysis also identifies critical research gaps concerning clinically meaningful outcomes, cost-effectiveness, transferability, and patient/provider experiences. These findings provide a roadmap for future investigations to improve patient care.Öğe The effect of general health on the psychological well-being of post-operative liver transplantation patients receiving immunosuppressants(Kare Publ, 2023) Harmanci, Pinar; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Yildiz, ErmanObjectives: This study aims to examine the effect of general health status on the psychological well-being of liver transplant recipients receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with the participation of 116 liver transplant recipients at the organ transplant institute of a research and practice hospital. We used personal information form, general health questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12), and psychological well-being (PWB) scale to collect data and performed the data analysis using statistical packed for the social sciences 25.0 by IBM.Results: Of the participants, 50% were women and between the ages of 51-64 and 52.6% had less income than their expenses; 75.9% of the recipients had a chronic disease, 33.6% had diabetes mellitus, and 25.9% had coronary artery disease. The GHQ-12 total score was high for psychiatric disorders, while the PWB scale score was moderate. There was a statistically significant, positive, and strong relationship between general health and PWB (p<0.05, r=0.022).Conclusion: General health and PWB are two important factors that mutually affect each other. Recognizing the poor psychological state of liver transplant patients and improving their general health contributes to a good postoperative period. During the post-operative period, liver recipients should be carefully monitored, and their psychological state should be improved.Öğe The effects of acceptance and commitment therapy in psychosis treatment: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials(Wiley, 2020) Yildiz, ErmanPurpose To identify, evaluate, and synthesize existing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examine the effect of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in the treatment of psychotic disorders and to integrate this knowledge and experience into the nursing literature. Design and Methods This systematic review is based on the Joanna Briggs Institute and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Findings This study was completed with 11 RCTs meeting the research criteria. It has been determined that the vast majority (82%) of the assessed studies were published after 2010. There is evidence that ACT is effective on depression, anxiety, and hallucinations seen in psychotic disorders. Practice Implications ACT is seen as a reasonable approach to be used and tested by nurses and other clinicians because it provides an explanatory and pragmatic approach to psychotic disorders.Öğe The effects of acceptance and commitment therapy on lifestyle and behavioral changes: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials(Wiley, 2020) Yildiz, ErmanPurpose To determine, evaluate, and synthesize the best available evidence about the evidence-based pragmatic effects of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on lifestyle and behavioral changes (LBCs). Design and Methods The PICOS formulations were used to improve the search strategy of this systematic review with the aim to find the right evidence and ask the right questions. The assessed articles were subjected to quality assessment using the PRISMA checklist and the Joanna Briggs Institute's standardized critical assessment and data extraction tools. Findings This study involved 30 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which met the research criteria. Although the included RCTs have several limitations in themselves, the results of this study suggested that the ACT will help maintain long-term LBCs (eg, weight management, effective coping with substance-related and addictive problems, eating and physical activity). Practice Implications Given that ACT is a trandiagnostic approach that promotes health-related LBCs in many diseases and populations, it seems reasonable for clinicians to use and test ACT to achieve pragmatic results.Öğe Ethical Big Data for Personalised Mental Health Nursing: A P4 and Systems View(Wiley, 2025) Yildiz, ErmanBackground: Mental health nursing faces transformation through big data and metadata integration. These technologies create new opportunities but introduce ethical and practical complexities. Digital adoption accelerated during COVID-19, making it essential to understand implications for nursing practice. Aim: This perspective paper aims to critically examine the transformative potential and ethical dilemmas of leveraging big data in mental health nursing, guided by systems biology and P4 (Predictive, Preventive, Personalised, and Participatory) medicine principles. It seeks to define the evolving roles of mental health nurses in this new digital landscape. Compounding this issue, approximately 73% of these deaths occur within low- and middle-income countries; this disparity necessitates focused resource allocation and culturally sensitive approaches. Psychiatric nurses occupy a critical position in suicide prevention efforts, serving as frontline responders in moments of acute crisis. Existing educational methodologies, including traditional lectures and role-playing simulations, frequently fall short, however. They often fail to adequately prepare nurses for the complexities of real-world scenarios. This article investigates the potential of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) technologies into suicide prevention education for psychiatric nursing. Specifically, it explores how these technologies can enhance training through immersive simulations, personalised feedback mechanisms and advanced data analytics, aiming to strengthen capacity-building, a core pillar identified by the WHO LIVE LIFE framework. Taking a global perspective, this article considers disparities in technological access and variations in cultural perceptions of suicide across high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries; acknowledging that technological solutions must be implemented equitably and with cultural sensitivity. Critical ethical considerations, including data privacy, algorithmic bias and potential overreliance on technology, require careful consideration. To address these challenges, a resource-appropriate and culturally sensitive framework is proposed for integrating AI and VR into nursing education, with the ultimate goal of reducing global suicide rates. Recommendations are presented concerning interdisciplinary collaboration and the ethical utilisation of technology.Öğe Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Suicide Prevention: A Bibliometric Analysis of Emerging Trends and Implications for Nursing(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2025) Yildiz, ErmanNurses play a crucial role in suicide prevention, yet the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies into nursing practice remains understudied. For this reason, the issue requires further clarity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived social support and posttraumatic growth in individuals receiving liver transplants.Method: This cross-sectional study was carried out with liver transplant recipients at a hospital in eastern Turkey (N = 117). The data collection instruments included a Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and hierarchical linear regression analysis. Results: It was revealed that the participants had high levels of posttraumatic growth (73.05 +/- 16.82) and perceived social support (67.75 +/- 14.33). A moderate and positive relationship was determined between the mean perceived social support total score and the mean posttraumatic growth total score of the participants (p < 0.01). Perceived social support explained 25.6% of the variance in posttraumatic growth (F = 39.600; p < 0.05; Adjusted R-2= 0.256), while perceived social support together with primary school-level education and low economic status explained 32.3% of the variance in posttraumatic growth (F = 17.954; p < 0.05; Adjusted R-2=0.323).Conclusion: The results on perceived social support revealed that liver transplant recipients had a subjective feeling of being understood, respected and supported by their families more than friends and significant other in a social environment. This study showed that high perceived social support contributes to posttraumatic growth in liver transplant recipients. Apart from perceived social support, other factors affecting posttraumatic growth included individuals' perceptions of their education level and economic situation.
