Evaluation of the history of cities in the context of spatial configuration to preview their future
(Elsevier, 2020) Gunaydin, Ahmet Salih; Yucekaya, Murat
As cities grow, their morphological and spatial configurations undergo some changes. In this context, the integration of old urban areas with newly planned ones is important. This way, while the urban identity elements are protected, the sustainability of cities is ensured. This study examines what kind of changes the spatial characteristics of Gaziantep city have undergone with the zoning plans made throughout its history. Space syntax method was utilized to determine its spatial properties. With this method, the integrity values, intelligibility (INCO: Correlation Between Integration and Connectivity) and accessibility (INCH: Correlation of Between Integration and Choice) values of the zoning plans were examined. As a result of the study, when the intelligibility values were examined in the radius of Rn, it was found out that there was a weak relationship in the settlement plans of 1938 (0,22), 1955 and 1973 (0,05), 1990 (0,0007) and 2012 (0,0003). That is, the intelligibility levels were low. When the accessibility values in the radius of Rn were examined, it was found out that 1938 (0,42), 1955 (0,34), 1973 (0,3) settlement plans had moderate significance while 1990 (0,19), 2012 (0,13) plans had low significance. Consequently, it is observed that as the cities grow, the intelligibility and accessibility values are reduced in general.

An Investigation of Sustainable Transportation Model in Campus Areas with Space Syntax Method
(Konya Technical Univ, Fac Architecture & Design, 2020) Gunaydin, Ahmet Salih; Yucekaya, Murat
Purpose Campus areas should be designed as centers where social activities can be fulfilled to meet students' needs, and which can serve the society by promoting sustainability. Nowadays, transportation systems (bike path, public transport, etc.) that support sustainability are not very common in campus areas. This situation leads to many environmental, economic and social problems. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop sustainable transport plans to uncover the current state of the transport system and to meet future transport needs. In the study, it was aimed to compare the spatial characteristics of Kilis 7 Aralik University's current situation and its design in line with sustainable transportation principles. Design/Methodology/Approach This study was carried out in the central campus of Kilis 7 Aralik University. In the study, the existing transportation infrastructure of the campus has been evaluated, a sustainable transportation model has been formed in accordance with the concept of green campus, and changes in spatial characteristics of the campus with the environmental, physical and social contributions of this model have been explained. Spatial composition method was used to analyze the spatial properties. Findings In the sustainable design model, while the local integration value decreased, global integration, intelligibility, accessibility, and synergy values were found to increase. Research Limitations/Implications In the study, the sustainable transportation model was carried out in a narrow area, such as the campus area. It is thought that the results obtained will be the basis for the studies to be carried out in larger areas. Practical Implications Campus accessibility, intelligibility and global integration values have increased with the sustainable transportation model. This situation is expected to increase the livability of campus areas. Social Implications It is thought that the mental health and academic achievements of the campus users will be positively affected in the campuses designed with the planning approach based on the sustainable transportation model. Originality/Value The article is considered important in terms of examining sustainable transportation in campus areas compared to spatial analysis.

The Role of Different Planting Types in Mitigating Urban Heat Island Effects: A Case Study of Gaziantep, Turkey
(Galenos Publ House, 2022) Yucekaya, Murat; Gunaydin, Ahmet Salih
The growth of cities and increase in their structural density lead to several problems. The most important of these is the formation of urban heat islands and the decrease in the bioclimatic comfort levels. This study focuses on the effect of different planting alternatives on bioclimatic comfort. In this context, different planting options with only leafy, only coniferous, leafy and coniferous at half at 4 m, 6 m, and 8 m intervals along with the current planting state of the study area in Gaziantep, Turkey were prepared. These plans were simulated with ENVI-met software. As a result of the study, coniferous plants were observed to have a cooling effect of approximately 2 degrees C - 2.5 degrees C compared to the leafy ones. In the simulation results of the map obtained with coniferous mixed plants, it was determined that the cooling effect values of only coniferous and only leafy plants were at almost average. Relative humidity was 15% higher in the plan conducted with coniferous plants compared to leafy plants. It was about 8% higher than leafy ones in mixed planning. There was no significant change in wind speed maps. In the plans with 4 m intervals on average radiation temperature maps, the refreshing effect of the coniferous was more than the leafy. As a result of the study, it was found out that the highest cooling effect was achieved in the planting plan created at 4 m intervals using coniferous plants.
