High levels of lipids and lipoproteins in young adults are significant risk factors for the development of heart disease in older ages. Increased levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, high levels of low-density lipoprotein and low levels of high-density lipoprotein contribute to cardiovascular disease. Therefore, when starting antiepileptics, it is important to assess changes in serum lipid levels and choose the safety drug, thus contributing to the prevention of cardiovascular complications in older ages. This paper is a review of the e effects of AED use on plasma lipid parameters.

Acrylamide applied during pregnancy causes the neurotoxic effect by lowering bdnf levels in thefetal brain
(Pergamon-elsevıer scıence ltd, the boulevard, langford lane, kıdlıngton, oxford ox5 1gb, england, 2018) Erdemli, Mehmet Erman; Aladag, M. Arif; Altinoz, Eyup; Demirtas, Sezin; Turkoz, Yusuf; Yigitcan, Birgul; Bag, Harika Gozukara
Objectives: The aim of this study is to elucidate the possible mechanism of neurotoxic effect of acrylamide (AA) applied during pregnancy on fetal brain development and to show the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on AA toxicity. Materials and methods: Four groups were formed with 9 pregnant rats each as control (C), acrylamide (AA), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), acrylamide plus N-acetylcysteine (AA plus NAC) groups. Caesarian section was implemented on the 20th day of pregnancy. Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels were analyzed and histopathologic examinations were performed in brain tissues of the fetuses. Results: Our data indicated that AA caused necrotic death and hemorrhagic damages in fetal brain tissue with decreasing BNDF levels and increasing oxidative stress. N-acetylcysteine prevented the toxic effects of its on fetal brain (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study indicated that acrylamide has toxic effects in the fetal brain and N-acetylcysteine prevents its toxic effect.

Analysis of vitamin d receptor polymorphisms in patients with familial multiple sclerosis
    (2018) Yucel, F.E.; Kamıslı, O.; Acar, C.; Sozen, M.; Tecellioğlu, M.; Ozcan, C.
Objective: Genetic and environmental factors are important in the development of the multiple sclerosis (MS). Vitamin D shows its effects on the immune system with the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the nucleus. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the VDR gene can lead to alterations in vitamin D functions and metabolism.Taq I, Apa I, Fok I and Bsm I polymorphisms and MS associations have been investigated in many studies. VDR gene polymorphism has not been previously studied in patients with familial MS. Aim: We aimed to investigate the relationship between familial MS patients present in Turkish population and VDR genotypes Taq I, Apa I and Fok I polymorphisms. Methods: 29 patients with a family history of MS and 120 healthy control subjects were included in the present study. We studied present VDR genotypes Taq I, Apa I and Fok I polymorphisms. Results: We observed a significant difference between controls and patient group only in Taq I polymorphism (p: 0.025). Homozygousity of G allele was not seen in the patients whereas in controls frequency of that genotype was p:0.208. When gender was considered males show significant difference for GG genotype. There were no significant association for the Apa I and Fok I polymorphisms. Conclusion: Although our findings suggest association between VDR Taq I polymorphism and the familial MS, additional studies are needed to establish detailed relationships.

Neurological autoantibodies in drug-resistant epilepsy of unknown cause
(Irısh journal of medıcal scıence, 2018) Tecellioglu, Mehmet; Kamisli, Ozden; Kamisli, Suat; Yucel, Fatma Ebru; Ozcan, Cemal
BackgroundAutoimmune epilepsy is a rarely diagnosed condition. Recognition of the underlying autoimmune condition is important, as these patients can be resistant to antiepileptic drugs.AimsTo determine the autoimmune and oncological antibodies in adult drug-resistant epilepsy of unknown cause and identify the clinical, radiological, and EEG findings associated with these antibodies according to data in the literature.MethodsEighty-two patients with drug-resistant epilepsy of unknown cause were prospectively identified. Clinical features were recorded. The levels of anti-voltage-gated potassium channel complex (anti-VGKCc), anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (anti-GAD), anti-phospholipid IgG and IgM, anti-cardiolipin IgG and IgM, and onconeural antibodies were determined.ResultsSerum antibody positivity suggesting the potential role of autoimmunity in the aetiology was present in 17 patients with resistant epilepsy (22.0%). Multiple antibodies were found in two patients (2.6%). One of these patients (1.3%) had anti-VGKCc and ANA, whereas another (1.3%) had anti-VGKCc and anti-TPO. A single antibody was present in 15 patients (19.5%). Of the 77 patients finally included in the study, 4 had anti-TPO (5.2%), 1 had anti-GAD (1.3%), 4 had anti-VGKCc (5.2%) 8 had ANA (10.3%), and 2 had onconeural antibodies (2.6%) (1 patient had anti-Yo and 1 had anti-MA2/TA). The other antibodies investigated were not detected. EEG abnormality (focal), focal seizure incidence, and frequent seizures were more common in antibody-positive patients.ConclusionAutoimmune factors may be aetiologically relevant in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy of unknown cause, especially if focal seizures are present together with focal EEG abnormality and frequent seizures.

Migraine and associated comorbidities are three times more frequent in children with ADHD and their mothers
    (2018) Çanta, Harika Gozukara
Objective: Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuro-developmental disorder related to internalizing and externalizing disorders as well as somatic complaints and disorders. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of headache subtypes, epilepsy, atopic disorders, motion sickness and recurrent abdominal pain among children and adolescents with ADHD and their parents. Methods: In a multi-center, cross-sectional, familial association study using case-control design, treatment na ve children and adolescents between 6 and 18 years of age diagnosed with ADHD according to the DSM-5 criteria as well as age- and gender matched healthy controls and their parents were evaluated by a neurologist and analyzed accordingly. Results: 117 children and adolescents with ADHD and 111 controls were included. Headache disorder diagnosis was common for both patients and healthy controls (59.0% vs. 37.8%), with a significantly elevated rate in the ADHD group (p = 0.002). Migraine was found in 26.0% of ADHD patients and 9.9% of healthy controls. Tension headache was found in 32.4% of ADHD patients and 27.9% of healthy controls. Headache diagnosis was also found to be significantly more common in mothers of children with ADHD than control group mothers (90.5% vs. 36.6%, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Headache diagnoses and specifically migraines were significantly more common among children with ADHD and their mothers, while recurrent abdominal pain was elevated in both parents and ADHD patients. Migraine is an important part of ADHD comorbidity, not only for children but also for mothers. Motion sickness may be reduced among families of ADHD probands. Tamsulosin-induced hyperprolactinemia in a patient with multiple sclerosis: a case report
(Journal of urologıcal surgery, 2018) Gorgel, Ahmet; Soylu, Ahmet; Gorgel, Sacit; Tecellioglu, Mehmet
Drug-induced hyperprolactinemia is one of the most common causes of non-physiologic hyperprolactinemia. In contrary to other anterior pituitary hormones, prolactin is not controlled via hypothalamic-pituitary negative feedback mechanism. Since prolactin secretion is inhibited mainly by dopamine, some drugs such as antipsychotics and prokinetics which block dopamine receptors may lead to hyperprolactinemia. Nevertheless, despite this well-known phenomenon, most of cases of drug-induced hyperprolactinemia are asymptomatic. On the other hand, hyperprolactinemia due to tamsulosin that is an alpha adrenergic receptor antagonist has not been reported yet. Herein, we present a 39-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis who developed hyperprolactinemia after starting treatment with tamsulosin for neurogenic bladder disease.
