(2017) KAFKAS, Armağan; KAFKAS, Muhammed; EKEN, Özgür; YILMAZ, Nurkan; Kızılay, Fatma; KAYAPINAR, Murat
It remains unclear how many hours of sleep are associated with obesity in children and adolescent in Turkey. The main purpose of this study was to determine the association between sleep and body mass index (BMI), body fat ratio (BFR), waist circumference (WC) in children and adolescents. Data were from a nationally representative sample of 23633 people whose ages are 7-18 males and females from the Turkish Health and Fitness Survey. The relationship between sleep duration and body composition values were resolved by "Pearson Correlation" analysis. In the total sample, there was a significant main effect across sleep duration categories (5-6, 7-8, 9-10) for BMI, BFR and WC. Compared to those sleeping durations, 9-10 sleepers have got lower BMI, BFR and WC and 5-6 hours sleepers have got biggest BMI, BFR and WC. In conclusion In children and adolescent reduced sleep durations are strongly associated with greater adiposity.

THE EFFECT OF SOMATOTYPE CHARACTER DIFFERENCES ON COGNITIVE AND BIOMOTOR ABILITIES
(2016) ÇINARLI, Fahri Safa; KAFKAS, Armağan; EKEN, Özgür; KAFKAS, Muhammed
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of somatotype differences on cognitive and biomotor abilities. This study was performed on 134 male (age average 21.85±2.34 years), 38 female (age average 21.28±2.22 years), and total 172 participants who do not have habit of regular exercise. The somatotype body types of participants were determined by Heath-Carter formula. As biomotor performance tests 30 m sprint, counter movement jump (CMJ), maximal anaerobic power (Ppeak), maximal anaerobic capacity (Pmean), Yo Yo Intermittent Recovery Test-1 (YIRT-1), hand-grip strength and flexibility (sit and reach) were measured. As measure of cognitive ability “The Transition to Higher Education Examination” (THEE) was used and evaluated the highest scores received by the participants. In this study participants with endomorph body type took the highest the THEE score (242.60±21.83), participants with mesomorph body type took lower scores than participants with endomorph (237.51±34.67) and finally participants who had ectomorphy body type showed lower scores than the ones with other two body types in terms of THEE scores (227.46±27.96). A statistically significant difference was found in jump test scores (p=0.04). According to these scores, participants with ectomorphic body type (p=0.34) and participants with mesomophic body type (p=0.14) the higher performance was seen in jump test scores. A statistically significant difference was found in YIRT1 test scores which is used to measure maximal oxygen consumption (p=0.00). According to results, participants with ectomorphic body type (p=0.01) and participants with mesomophic body type (p=0.00) the higher performance was seen in aerobic capacity scores. As result, participants with endomorphy body type who had the highest the THEE scores showed lower scores than the ones with other two body types in terms of hand-grip strength, flexibility, CMJ, 30 m sprint and YIRT-1 tests scores.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF TURKEY’S EARLY REPUBLICAN PERIOD
    (2016) Temel, Cenk
The purpose of this study is to determine the general characteristics of the physical education classes in early republican period in Turkey by examining the photos taken at schools in various cities in those times. The document analysis technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods, has been adopted in the study. The data of the study have been obtained from 37 physical education classes photographs, preserved in the Ministry of National Education, General Administration of Innovation and Education Archives, and which were taken between the years 1926 and 1927. The analyses of the photographs were made by using the four predetermined themes (the curricula of the classes, the clothes used in the classes, sports branches, and the instructors of the classes). When the data obtained with the analyses are examined, it has been determined that the curricula of the classes were characterized with the Gymnastics of Sweden and scout applications, which is in agreement with the soul of the period; the clothes were preferred as school uniforms and casual wear; the sports branches were preferred as cricket, tennis and basketball. The teachers are visible in 26 of the photographs (18 male teachers, 8 female teachers), and there are only the students in other photographs. As a consequence, it may be suggested that the physical education classes in the early years of the Republic in Turkey has -in the light of the photographs- a variety in the contents, the applications and the clothes; the participation of the students -rather than their sportive performances- is cared for; and the instructors are not specialized as the physical education teachers.

EXAMINATION OF COMPETITIVE SELF-PRESENTATION OF ARTIFICIAL TURF FOOTBALLERS ACCORDING TO SELECTED VARIABLES
(2014) TAŞÇI, Meziyet; KARADEMİR, Tamer; DÖŞYILMAZ, Enver
This study was performed with the aim of determining how competitive self-presentations of individuals playing football on artificial turf were shaped according to selected variables. Concordantly, 310 athletes in total who participated in a private artificial turf tournament organized citywide in Kahramanmaras were included in the sampling group. The voluntariness principle was followed and athletes who were willing to participate in the study were included in the sampling group. With the purpose of collecting data for this study, the “Competitive Self-Presentation Scale,” validity and reliability studies of which were performed by Çağlar et al., (2008), and which was collected under three dimensions (fear of appearing incompetent and concern over others’ impression, fear of being unable to cope with pressure and concern over current form), was applied on the sampling group in order to determine levels of competitive self-presentation. The results of the studies revealed that athletes who are in the younger age groups had low levels of fear of appearing incompetent, concern over others’ impressions, and fear of being unable to deal with the pressure, and athletes sparing more time for sports and exercise had lower levels of concern over current forms compared to those engaged in fewer sportive activities. It was also identified that those who engage in sports with their friends had higher levels of concern over others’ impressions and concern over current forms compared to those who do sports alone or with family members.
