Özet
Öz:Elli dokuz yıl boyunca Türk basın hayatının içinde yer alıp yakın tarihe tanıklık etmiş olan Metin Toker'in 1943'te Cumhuriyet gazetesinde başlayan muhabirlik yılları, 1951 - 1953 yılları arasında Zafer ve Yeni İstanbul gazetelerinde devam etmiştir. 1954 - 1967 döneminde ise siyasi yazarlık serüveni Akis dergisiyle zirveye çıkmıştır. 1950'li yıllardaki demokrasi adına yazdığı sert muhalif yazılar sebebiyle Demokrat Parti Dönemi'nde iki kez cezaevine girerek iki yıla yakın hapis yatmıştır. 1980 darbesi sonrasındaki siyasal yapılanmaya ordunun müdahalesini eleştiren yazıları sebebiyle de üç ay hapis cezası almıştır. Toker, askeri rejime eleştirilerinin yanında laik-demokratik cumhuriyet düzenine tehdit olarak gördüğü kişi ya da gruplara karşı da köşesinde bir fikir mücadelesi vermiştir. 1975 - 1980 döneminde Hürriyet gazetesinde, 1968 - 1975 ve 1980 - 2002 yılları arasında Milliyet gazetesinde köşe yazarı olarak gazetecilik mesleğini sürdürmüş olan Toker, İsmet Paşa'nın damadı olarak "Milli Damat" lakabını almıştır. 1977 - 1980 yılları arasında Cumhuriyet Senatosu üyeliği yapmıştır. 1980 darbesi sonrasında Türkiye'nin Avrupa Konseyi siyasi delegeliği görevini yürütmüş; Uluslararası Basın Enstitüsü Yürütme Kurulu üyeliğinde yer almış ayrıca 1983'te faaliyete geçen İnönü Vakfı'nın kuruculuk ve yönetiminde bulunmuştur. Bu çalışmada Toker'in hayatının ve faaliyetlerinin incelenmesi amaç edinilmiştir. Mevcut bilgiler, kendisinin yazdığı kitaplar ile gazete ve dergilerdeki makaleleri ve eşi Özden Toker ile yapılan söyleşilerden derlenmiştir. Aynı zamanda dönemin diğer siyasetçi ve yazarları tarafından kaleme alınan hatırat ve araştırma - inceleme eserlerinden de istifade edilmiştir
Abstract:Metin Toker occupied a place in the Turkish press for fifty-nine years and also witnessed the contemporary history of Turkey. He began his career as a correspondent for Cumhuriyet in 1943 and then worked as correspondent of Zafer and Yeni İstanbul newspapers between 1951 and 1953. His career as a columnist on politics reached to peak in the journal of Akis from 1954 to 1967. Because of his bitter critics to the Democrat Party in the name of democracy, Toker was sent to prison two times and served a time of nearly two years there in 1950s. He was also sentenced to three months because of his critics to military intervention to political life after the 1980 Coup. Besides his critics to military regime, he wrote against some people and groups whom he considered as a threat against secular-democratic republic. In his career, Toker also worked as columnist at Hürriyet and at Milliyet . He was called “national son-in-law” as being son-in-law of İsmet İnönü. Toker was a member of the Senate of Republic between 1977 and 1980. After the 1980 Coup, he served as the political delegate of Turkey at the European Council and took part in the Executive Committee of the International Press Institute. Toker was also a founding member and an executive of the İnönü Foundation, which was established in 1983. This work aims at studying life and activities of Toker. Sources of this work are primarily compiled from his books, his newspaper and journal articles and interviews made with his wife Özden Toker. Moreover, memoirs of politicians and authors from his time and monographs and other academic works are consulted in this work
