dc.description.abstractHistory reached its contemporary methodologies at the end of analyzing past events in terms of scientific methods. Nations who try to decide their nowadays and their future by their courage that they attained from their previous experiences also consider being obedient to scientific criteria and features. Meanwhile, they have to transfer national and universal memory to the generation they educate. Holding similar anxieties, Turkish Republic considered national as well as world history in order to form national conciousness that will maintain the unity and cooperation of the Turkish nation. In this study, giving historical consciousness to the new generation is analyzed in order to go beyond the obstacles in modernization and to obtain the passage from ummet to nation in the process of forming the idea of nation state by historical knowledge. Especially, in order to transfer historical knowledge to new generations, it was necessary to prepare periodicals that were proper for their levels and their interests. Periodicals that played a significant role changed according to the improvements and the necessetities of that time. In the dawn of the Republic, scientific approaches regarding the improvement of national historical consciousnss were inadequate in the children. s journals and, then, Turkish history studies began in the leadership of Ataturk at the end of the 1920s. Thus, national history consciousness attributed a scientific content and a national and international criteria by the establishment of the Institution of Turkish History in the 1930s. In this article, historical subjects and national feasts that took place in children. s journals, and especially data and activities related to the recent history are analyzed. This study also analyzes how some children. s journals such as Sevimli Mecmua, Bizim Mecmua, Gurbuz Turk Cocugu, Yeni Yol, Citi Piti, Cocuk Dunyasi ve Resimli Dunya, published before the 1930s, dealt with history and historical subjects. The articles, poems, plays, short stories and pictures taken from the children. s journals in this period were analyzed in accordance to both national and world history.en_US
