Öğe Acquired Capillary Hemangioma With Features of Tufted Angioma in the External Auditory Canal(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2013) Cetinkaya, Zekeriya; Toplu, Yuksel; Kizilay, Ahmet; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginTufted angiomas may occur in the head and neck region, but the external auditory canal is a previously undefined localization. There are only 19 cases of hemangiomas reported in this unique localization. However, this case is the first capillary hemangioma of the tufted variant being reported with a recurrence after 7 years after surgical excision in a 47-year-old male patient.Öğe Atypical Presentation of Skull Metastasis from Rectal Adenocarcinoma as an Initial Symptom of Recurrence(Hindawi Ltd, 2012) Firat, Cemal; Aytekin, Ahmet Hamdi; Erbatur, Serkan; Aydin, Nasuhi Engin; Selcuk, Engin BurakMost malignant rectal tumors are histopathologically characterized as adenocarcinoma and generally metastasize to distant organs such as the lungs or the liver. Metastasis of rectal carcinomas to the skull is extremely rare. This study reports the initial diagnosis of rectal adenocarcinoma recurrence in a 65-year-old female with scalp metastasis. The patient's history indicated a colorectal adenocarcinoma that was resected five years earlier. A skull metastasis from a rectal adenocarcinoma has not yet been reported in the literature as an initial symptom for recurrence. This paper suggests that skull metastasis from any part of the body must be considered in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumors in the skull even in the absence of intestinal symptoms.Öğe Evaluation of proliferative-apoptotic activity in inactive, proliferative, hyperplastic endometria and endometrioid carcinomas(Aves Yayincilik, Ibrahim Kara, 2007) Usta, Ufuk; Edali, Mehmet Naci; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginObjectives: The role of proliferative and apoptotic mechanisms in various endometrial pathologies and in proliferative and atrophic endometria was assessed by immunohistochemical methods. Patients and Methods: A total of 55 cases consisting of 13 endometrioid carcinomas, eight cases of endometrial hyperplasia, 15 cases of disordered proliferation, 12 cases with proliferative and seven with inactive/athrophic endometria gathered from the local archives were included in the study. Immunohistochernical markers and stains, namely bcl-2, an antiapopitotic marker, and Ki-67, a proliferative marker were applied to the sections of selected diagnostic tissue blocks. Additionally, mitotic counts per 10 high power fields were obtained in cases of hyperplasia and carcinoma. Results: Mean H-score value for bcl-2 reaction was 0.48 for endometrioid carcinoma. Mean H-score values for cases of hyperplasia, disordered proliferation, proliferation and atrophy were calculated as 1.93, 1.62, 1.5 and 1.0, respectively. Ki-67 proliferation index for endometrioid carcinoma was 48.9%. This index was 32%, 29%, 31.5% and 8.4% for hyperplasia, disordered proliferation, proliferation and atrophy, respectively. Conclusion: Staining with bcl-2 peaked in cases of hyperplasia, and lost its intensity as nuclear atypia became evident. Weakest staining was observed in cases with grade II and III endometrioid carcinomas. In contrast, proliferative indexes increased with increasing, grades of carcinoma.Öğe Fascioliasis: A Rare Parasitic Infection-Mimicking Tumor in the Liver: Report of Two Cases(De Gruyter Poland Sp Zoo, 2019) Samdanci, Emine; Sahin, Nurhan; Dagli, Adile Ferda; Akatli, Ayse Nur; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginFascioliasis is a rarely encountered parasitic infection in Turkey that mainly affects the liver and bile ducts. Other defined localizations of the parasite are the lungs, gastrointestinal system, and subcutaneous fatty tissue. Two cases of female patients who presented to the hospital with abdominal pain and whose physical examination and laboratory findings were normal except peripheral eosinophilia, were detected to have liver masses with necrotic areas. Segmental hepatectomies were performed in both cases with the preliminary diagnosis of liver tumors. Upon microscopic examinations of the resection materials, necrotic granulomatous inflammation with eosinophilic reaction at the periphery and the parasite (Fasciola hepatica) were seen. Both cases were reported to be fascioliasis according to these findings. Two cases of fascioliasis mimicking malignancy in the liver are presented here together with literature findings.Öğe Fibro-Osseous pseudotumor of the digits(Ekin Tibbi Yayincilik Ltd Sti-Ekin Medical Publ, 2007) Usta, Ufuk; Bas, Murat; Aydin, Nasuhi Engin; Gueresci, ServetFibro-osseous pseucloturnor of the digits is a conflicting and rare benign lesion leading to serious problems and conflicts in differential diagnosis, especially with extraskeletal osteosarcoma. A 57-year-old man presented with a painful swelling in the proximal phalange of his left index finger. Direct radiography taken on admission revealed a soft tissue swelling with suspicious calcification in the proximal phalange palmar aspect of the index finger of left hand The excised specimen of, 2x1.5x0.7 cm was gray-white with a rough, somewhat irregular outer surface. Microscopic examination revealed a mesenchimal tumorous lesion with a partially degenerated and partially calcified/ossified myxoid stroma. There were cellular areas composed of fibroblastic spindle cells, with mild-moderate nuclear atypia and moderate mitotic activity. Those cellular areas also contained osteoclast like multinucleated giant cells forming disordered groups. The final diagnosis based on histopathologic, radiographic and clinical findings was fibro-osseous pseuclotumor of the digits.Öğe Fulminant hepatitis A infection in second trimester of pregnancy requiring living-donor liver transplantation(Wiley-Blackwell, 2012) Simsek, Yavuz; Isik, Burak; Karaer, Abdullah; Celik, Onder; Kutlu, Ramazan; Aydin, Nasuhi Engin; Yilmaz, SezaiWe present an 18-year-old pregnant woman who was referred to our emergency clinic as a case of acute hepatic failure and hepatic encephalopathy. Laboratory tests showed abnormal liver function tests and serological workup was consistent with acute hepatitis A infection. Ultrasonography revealed a single live fetus with fetal biometry compatible with 18 gestational weeks. The patient underwent a highly urgent liver transplantation using a right lobe graft from her husband. Histological examination of the explanted liver showed acute, lymphocyte-rich, diffuse necrotizing hepatitis, consistent with acute necrotizing hepatitis A. After the operation her allograft function gradually recovered. Her follow-up obstetrics ultrasound revealed a male fetus with severely decreased amniotic fluid. The patient was informed about the poor prognosis of her pregnancy and the pregnancy was terminated by vaginal misoprostol induction. She has maintained a good general condition and liver function for 4 months postoperatively, up to the present time.Öğe Histopathological subtyping of actinic keratosis and it's coexistence with nonmelanotic skin cancers in Gaziantep and Malatya regions(Deri Zuhrevi Hastaliklar Dernegi, 2016) Sahin, Nurhan; Bozdag, Zehra; Erkilic, Suna; Aydin, Nasuhi Engin; Sener, SerpilBackground and Design: Actinic (solar) keratosis (AK) is a precancerous, epidermal lesion, which develops in sensitive skin exposed to sun for a long period. AKs are divided into different histopathological subtypes. There is a link between the clinical progression of the histopathological subtypes, the degree of cellular atypia, and the precancerous nature of the lesion. Different series have reported that the rate of transformation of AK to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) ranges between 12% and 20%. Materials and Methods: In this study, we reevaluated patients who were diagnosed with AK in the Pathology Departments of the Medical Faculties of Inonu and Gaziantep Universities over an eight-year period, and divided the patients into different histopathological subtypes. In addition, we investigated the association between the lesions, and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), SCC and both carcinomas. Results: 29,6% of cases were proliferative AK, 27% of cases were hypertrophic AK. 19% and 13% of all lesions was associated with BCC and SCC, respectively. Conclusion: In this study, we found that the most frequent subtype was proliferative AK and the most frequent nonmelanotic skin cancer was BCC associated with AK.Öğe Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor: A Rare Tumor in the Tongue(Hindawi Ltd, 2013) Ekici, Nur Yucel; Bayindir, Tuba; Kizilay, Ahmet; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginInflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is composed of myofibroblast and inflammatory cell infiltration of the tissue. Malign transformation and recurrence rate of this tumor is rare and accepted as benign fibroinflammatory disease. The main etiology is unclear, but infection, trauma, and immunologic event are accused. In this study, we presented a 75-year-old man with a mass on his tongue, which was diagnosed as inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. This type of tumor is rarely seen in the tongue and might be difficult to diagnose. Complete mass excision was provided for an adaquete treatment.Öğe Novel noninvasive detection method for endometriosis: research and development of scintigraphic survey on endometrial implants in rats(Elsevier Science Inc, 2008) Hascalik, Seyma; Celik, Onder; Kekilli, Ersoy; Elter, Koray; Karakas, Hakki Muammer; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginIn this experimental study on endometriosis, the majority of the implants were successfully detected with technetium-(Tc-99m) labeled red blood cell scintigraphy.Öğe Nuclear transcription factor-kappa beta-dependent ultrastructural alterations within the placenta and systemic inflammatory activation in pregnant patients with hemolysis, elevated liver functions and low thrombocyte count (HELLP) syndrome: a case-control study(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2013) Simsek, Yavuz; Gul, Mehmet; Celik, Onder; Aydin, Nasuhi Engin; Duz, Senem Arda; Celik, Ebru; Ozerol, ElifObjective: Preeclampsia appears to be associated with a higher extent of inflammation than in uncomplicated pregnancies. We aimed to test whether this was the case in patients with hemolysis, elevated liver functions and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome and to clarify the contribution of placental and systemic inflammatory variables in the development of this syndrome. Materials and methods: Thirty healthy pregnant women (control group) and 20 patients with HELLP syndrome (study group) were included in the study. Placental inflammatory activity was evaluated by quantifying immunohistochemically the levels of p65/RelA expression of nuclear transcription factor-kappa beta (NF-kB) in paraffin-embedded tissue samples. In addition, ultrastructural changes in placental morphology in HELLP patients were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The serum concentrations of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were also measured and compared. Results: p65/RelA immunoexpression and serum MPO and CRP levels were significantly higher in patients with HELLP syndrome (p < 0.05). TEM of placenta in the study group revealed severely vacuolized syncytiotrophoblasts, irregular basal lamina and damaged capillary endothelium when compared with the placenta of control subjects. Conclusion: Our results suggest that over-expression of placental NF-kB is correlated with elevation of serum inflammatory markers and placental ultrastructural changes, which may point to an important role of local and systemic inflammatory activation in the pathogenesis of HELLP syndrome.Öğe Positivity of Demodex spp. in biopsy specimens of nevi(Malaysian Soc Parasitology Tropical Medicine, 2009) Sener, Serpil; Karaman, Ulku; Colak, Cemil; Aydin, Nasuhi Engin; Sasmaz, Sezai; Iraz, MeryemMelanocytic skin tumors are caused by nevus cells, epidermal melanocytes and dermal melanocytes. The aim of the study was to detect the positivity of Demodex spp. in biopsy specimens of skin diagnosed as nevus. In this retrospective study, the specimens obtained from 110 patients diagnosed with nevus and stained by hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) method were assessed for Demodex. Statistical analysis was done using independent sample t test, Pearson Chi-square and Yates' adjusted Chi-square test. For statistics, p<0.05 was considered significant. Consequently, 43 (39.1%) out of 110 specimens were detected to have Demodex spp. Demodex colonization augmented in nevi can be explained by the possible affinity of the parasite to the melanin pigment.Öğe Primarily unknown origin adenocarcinoma metastasis in bone marrow presenting with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: A case report(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2013) Koroglu, Mustafa; Erkurt, Mehmet Ali; Berber, Ilhami; Kuku, Irfan; Kaya, Emin; Ozkahraman, Adnan; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginWe report a case of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura refractory to plasma exchange treatment. Emin; Hascalik, Seyma; Elter, Koray; Celik, Nilufer; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginObjective: To investigate the effects of follitropin alfa and beta on the myoelectrical activity of rat myometrium using signal-processing techniques. Design: Prospective, placebo-controlled study. Setting: Animal and pharmacology laboratory at Inonu University. Animal(S): Forty-five female Wistar albino rats. Intervention(s): Thirty of 45 animals involved in the experiment were registered as the superovulation group. After two successive normal estrous cycles, these animals were put into three equal subgroups. Group 1 was the control; animals were given 0.9% saline. Groups 2 and 3 were treated with follitropin alfa (Gonal-f) and follitropin beta (Puregon), respectively. The other 15 animals were ovariectomized (OVX) and subjected to the same protocol. The uterine myoelectrical signals were recorded and analyzed using a Matlab environment. Main Outcome Measure(s): Power/second, variance, and the effects of recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on myoelectrical signals were assessed through temporal, spectral, and joint time-frequency analysis. The uterine endometrium and ovarian morphology were also assessed concerning primary follicles, antral follicles, and corpora lutea. Result(S): The power and some characteristic spectral components of myoelectrical signal were reduced with the administration of follitropin alfa and beta. No statistically significant difference was detected between endometrial and ovarian histology of the rats treated with these follitropins. Conclusion(s): Uterine myoelectrical signals change with administration of recombinant human FSH preparations. Follitropin beta and, more precisely, follitropin alfa suppress the spectral components and power of the myoelectrical signals, which provides uterine quiescence.Öğe Unusual case of soft plate hairy polyp causing airway obstruction and review of the literature(W B Saunders Co-Elsevier Inc, 2010) Kalcioglu, M. Tayyar; Can, Sermet; Aydin, Nasuhi EnginHairy polyps are rare benign tumors that are derived from 2 germ layers: ectoderm and mesoderm. Although location in the head and neck area is rare, the soft palate as the site of origin is even more unusual. The clinical presentation depends on the polyp's location and size. These masses can commonly cause respiratory and feeding difficulties. We present a case of a soft palate hairy polyp causing respiratory and feeding difficulties in a 6-month-old female infant and review the literature. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Cryopreservation period and viability of cartilage grafts have remained unclear. This study was performed to investigate the durability, viability, and behavior of fresh or cryopreserved cartilage grafts when used as autografts or allografts in various forms. Six cartilage grafts (1 of each preparation type; 3 blocks and 3 diced) were prepared by wrapping with Surgicel or autogenous fascia, or they were left bare. After the graft preparation stage, the cartilage grafts were inserted into pockets prepared on the dorsum of each rabbit. Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 (6 rabbits in each group) received autogenous fresh grafts, allogenous fresh grafts, autogenous cryopreserved grafts, and allogenous cryopreserved grafts, respectively. All cartilage grafts were implanted for 2 months. At the end of the second month, specimens were harvested and analyzed. The bare grafts provided the most viable specimens. There was no significant difference between the frozen or fresh and allograft or autograft groups with respect to viability and resorption ratios. The bare block graft, in all groups, survived significantly more than the other graft types. Allografts (homografts), similar autografts, did not create major problems, and they had excellent host tolerance and low antigenicity, especially when the perichondrium was removed. Viability and durability of the bare grafts (diced and block) were better than fascia or Surgicel-wrapped cartilage graft forms.
