Öğe Effects of misoprostol on the endometrium of ovariectomized rats(2000) Sönmez A.S.; Birincio?lu M.; Aydin A.; Kiliç E.; Şahin N.Misoprostol (Cytotec, Searle, England), a prostaglandin E1 analogue, is indicated for protection of peptic disease induced by cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors. Since vaginal bleeding was reported during misoprostol use previously, we hypothesized that misoprostol might cause endometrial stimulation. Therefore, we investigated the effects of misoprostol on the endometrium of ovariectomized (OVX) rats to investigate any endometrial changes. Thirty-two, four month-old, parous female Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. All rats underwent ovariectomy at the beginning of the study. Sixty days after the ovariectomy six rats were sacrificed to remove the uterus and the remaining 26 rats were divided into three groups. Group I (six rats) was treated with vehicle (1 cc of distilled water orally) for 60 days. Groups II and II (ten rats each) were treated with oral 100 and 200 ?g/day misoprostol, respectively, for 60 days. At the end of the treatment laparotomy was performed and the uteri of all the rats were removed. Histopathologic examination of the endometrium 60 days after ovariectomy revealed endometrial atrophy. But after misoprostol administration a minimal endometrial proliferation was encountered regardless of the dose of misoprostol. The present study demonstrated that misoprostol can cause a proliferation in the endometrium after 60 days of administration. Long term studies are needed to evaluate if this proliferation leads to hyperplasia and cancer, especially in postmenopausal women.Öğe Eosinophilic fasciitis - Progression to linear scleroderma. A Case Report(1999) Balat A.; Akinci A.; Turgut M.; Mizrak B.; Aydin A.Eoslnophilic fasciitis is a rare disease in children. Although changes similar to linear scleroderma have been reported, the outcome is usually good. In this report, a 10-year-old boy who developed eosinophilic fasciitis without a good response to steroids is presented. He progressed to linear scleroderma within months. Our case reinforces the hypothesis that eosinophilic fasciitis may be an early manifestation or a variant of localized scleroderma similar to the other cases in the literature.Öğe Monte Carlo studies in accelerator-driven systems for transmutation of high-level nuclear waste(2007) Şarer B.; Korkmaz M.E.; Günay M.; Aydin A.A spallation neutron source was modeled using a high energy proton accelerator. The aim is to maximize the minor actinides and fission products transmutation rates, which is created from the operation of nuclear power reactors for the production of electricity. The transmutation system is composed of a natural lead target, beam window, subcritical core, reflector, and structural material. The neutrons are produced by the spallation reaction of protons from a high intensity linear accelerator in the spallation target, and the fission reaction in the core. It is used a hexagonal lattice for the waste and fuel assemblies. The system is driven by a 1 GeV, 10 mA proton beam incident on a natural lead cylindrical target. The protons were uniformly distributed across the beam. The core is a cylindrical assembly. The main vessel is surrounded by a reflector made of graphite. The axes of the proton beam and the target are concentric with the main vessel axis. The structural walls and the beam window are made of the same material, stainless steel, HT9. We investigated the following neutronics parameters: spallation neutron and proton yields, spatial and energy distribution of the spallation neutrons, and protons, heat deposition, and the production rates of hydrogen and helium, transmutation rate of minor actinides and fission products. In the calculations, the Monte Carlo code MCNPX, which is a combination of LAHET and MCNP, was used. To transport a wide variety of particles, The Los Alamos High Energy Transport Code (LAHET) was used.Öğe The prevalence of lymphoid follicles and intestinal metaplasia in Helicobacter pylori associated clinically significant gastroduodenal diseases(Turkish Society of Gastroenterology, 1999) Taskin V.; Gurer I.; Sari R.; Aydin A.; Yildirim B.; Aladag M.; Hilmioglu F.This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of lymphoid follicle formation and intestinal metaplasia in patients with Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) associated clinically significant diseases. Biopsies from the antrum, corpus and fundus of stomach were obtained from 153 patients (non-ulcer dyspepsia, n:110; duodenal ulcer n:23, duodenal ulcer complicated by obstruction, n:20) with histopathologically proven H. pylori infection. All biopsies were examined for lymphoid follicle with germinal center and intestinal metaplasia. Lymphoid follicles were found in 44.5% of non-ulcer disypeptic patients, 70% of duodenal ulcer complicated by obstruction patients and in 47.8% of uncomplicated duodenal ulcer patients. In contrast, 15.5% of non-ulcer disypeptic patients and 20% of complicated duodenal ulcer patients had associated intestinal metaplasia while no intestinal metaplasia was observed in uncomplicated duodenal ulcer patients. Intestinal metaplasia incidence was not statistically different among the different gastroduodenal pathologies (P>0.05). However the incidence of lymphoid follicles was significantly higher in patients with complicated duodenal ulcer (P<0.05). Our results indicate that H.pylori infection in complicated duodenal ulcers are relatively chronic and aggressive compared to H.pylori infection in other gastroduodenal disorders.Öğe Syringocystadenoma papilliferum(1997) Ozcan A.; Senol M.; Dogan G.; Aydin A.; Atik E.Syringocystadenoma papilliferum is a rare adnexal benign tumur which commonly develops from apocrine sweat glands. It is mostly seen in women. The majority of the lesions are located on the scalp and neck. They are rarely found on the trunk and the extremities. The lesion is generally found as an asymptomatic solitary plaque. A basal cell epithelioma can rarely arise in this lesion especially when exists with a nevus sebaceus. A 33-year-old woman with a syringocystadenoma papilliferum was presented and the current literature on this issue was reviewed.Öğe Teratoma presenting as a cystic lesion on the chest wall(2000) Soysal Ö.; Kutlu R.; Saraç K.; Aydin A.; Özen S.A 28-year-old woman presented with a rare case of chest-wall teratoma. Computed tomography of a cystic lesion located in the anterior chest wall revealed a hyperdense object with the appearance of a tooth. The cystic mass was totally excised via a chest-wall incision without thoracotomy. Pathologic examination showed a benign teratoma containing an immature tooth.Öğe Tularemia: A Case Transmitted from a Sheep(1999) Senol M.; Özcan A.; Karincaoglu Y.; Aydin A.; Özerol I.H.Tularemia is an arthropod-borne infectious disease caused by Francisella tularensis, a gram-negative microorganism that normally resides in a wide range of wild and domestic animals. The disease is characterized by a sudden onset with high fever, headache, malaise, chills, myalgia, and arthralgia. A short time after exposure, an inflamed and ulcerated lesion rapidly appears at the site of entry. A regional lymphadenopathy follows the cutaneous presentation. Cultures from the lesions or blood generally give negative results. Histopathologic examination reveals either a nonspecific inflammatory infiltrate or an infectious granuloma. The most useful laboratory procedure in the diagnosis of tularemia is serologic tests. Streptomycin, gentamicin, and tetracycline are the drugs of choice in the treatment Quinolones are also effective. Tularemia is fairly rare in Turkey. We present a typical case of ulceroglandular tularemia transmitted from a sheep to a young man.Öğe Two cases of acrokeratoelastoidosis: Failure of acitretin treatment(1996) Dogan G.; Oram Y.; Hazneci E.; Muezzinoglu B.; Aydin A.Acrokeratoelastoidosis (AKE) is a rare distinguished clinical entity among other papular acrokeratodermas. It is characterized by smooth shiny papules on the hands and feet. We present two unrelated cases of AKE with typical clinical and histologic findings. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed with histopathologic findings, particularly, fragmentation and rarefaction of elastic fibers in the dermis. In the treatment of AKE, 3 months of acitretin administration (0.5 mg/kg/d) was found ineffective. Its treatment is still unsatisfactory and needs further therapeutic trials.
