Attitudes and behaviors of individuals aged 90 and over towards rational use of drugs: cross-sectional research
(2023) Karakaş, Neşe; Deniz, Serdar; Bentli, Recep
Introduction: The current study was aimed to evaluate the attitudes and behaviors of individuals 90 years and older living in Malatya regarding rational drug use. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out with people aged 90 and over (n=1022) living in Malatya province and its districts. Face-to-face interview method was used to collect study data. In the first part of the form used for data collection, the descriptive characteristics of the participants were questioned, and in the second part, the attitudes and behaviors towards rational drug use were examined. Rational drug use features are evaluated by World Health Organization (WHO) prescribing indicators. Results: The frequency of rational drug use was 84.1%, and the rate of over-the-counter drug use was 19.2% among individuals 90 years and older. 52.3% of the participants had over-the-counter medication at home for use, when necessary, without doctor's recommendation. The most commonly available over-the-counter group of drugs at home were painkillers. Conclusion: The frequency of rational drug use in individuals aged 90 and older has been determined higher than in the literature on individuals aged 65 and older. Education, guidance and counseling programs can be created to increase rational drug use within elderly people communities.

(Mdpi, 2024) Koca, Mehmet; Deniz, Serdar; Inceoglu, Feyza; Kilic, Ali
Examining the workload and working conditions of healthcare workers is crucial regarding the quality of the work life of employees and the quality of services provided. This study aims to determine the effects of the perceptions of workload on the quality of work life of health personnel working in two different tertiary hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health and the Higher Education Institution in Turkiye with structural equation modeling. This study was conducted in two hospitals in Malatya province: Inonu University Turgut ozal Medical Center affiliated with the Higher Education Institution and Malatya Training and Research Hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health. The mean score of the Individual Workload Perception Scale was 106.18 +/- 16.5, and the mean score of the Work-related Quality of Life Scale was 66.39 +/- 15.33. Total workload scores had a statistically significant positive effect on total quality of work life scores (beta 1 = 0.98; p = 0.001). It was concluded that there was a statistically significant relationship between workload and quality of work life and age, unit of employment, working time in the profession, and hospital type.

Nutritional status of elderly people living in nursing home and some related factors
(2019) Bentli, Recep; Karakaş, Neşe; Firinci, Betul; Deniz, Serdar
Abstract: The aim of this research is to evaluate the nutritional status of elderly people residing in a nursing home and to examine the relationship of the results with chronic diseases. The sampling of the descriptive and cross-sectional research consists of 65 nursing home residents. The data of the research were collected through the Personal Information Form, Mini Nutritional Assessment Test (MNA), Hand Grip Strength Test, Activities of Daily Living Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale. In the analysis of the data, p<0.05 value was accepted as statistically significant. The mean MNA score of the participants was calculated as 22.24±4.8; malnutrition was found in 15.4% and malnutrition risk was detected in 41.5%. There was a statistically significant positive relationship between the MNA scores and hand grip strengths of the participants (r=0.299, p<0.05). Low hand grip strength was discovered in 52.3% of the participants. There was no significant difference among the distribution of MNA scores according to the chronic diseases of the participants (p>0.05). MNA scores of the participants who had depression were found to be significantly low (p<0.05). As the dependency level in the activities of daily living increased, hand grip strength (r=-362, p?0.01) and MNA scores (r=-596, p?0.01) decreased significantly.

The Relationship of Methylated Arginines with Urine Cadmium Levels
(Clin Lab Publ, 2022) Oztan, Ozgur; Turksoy, Vugar A.; Deniz, Serdar; Iritas, Servet B.; Tutkun, Engin
Background: In this study, we aimed to show that methylated arginines are the predictors of non-clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular complications in metal workers exposed to Cd. Methods: The 80 Cd-exposed metal workers and 80 non-exposed workers (control) included in the study were available for measuring arginine, ADMA, SDMA, and L-NMMA levels. Results: The average urine Cd levels (CdU) found were 1.03 +/- 0.8 mu g/g creatinine (0.84 +/- 0.65 mu g/L) ranging from 0.01 to 3.00 mu g/g creatinine in the control group and 5.41 +/- 5.2 mu g/g creatinine (4.29 +/- 3.81 mu g/L) ranged from 0.11 to 27.2 mu g/g creatinine in metal workers. On the other hand, the median ratios of the different groups (exposed and control) were found to be 449.35 and 483.88 for arginine/ADMA and 1.28 and 1.33 SDMA/ADMA, respectively. Conclusions: The present study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between cadmium exposure and methylated arginines such as ADMA/SDMA/L-NMMA parameters which is important for the early detection atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases .
